Audio tour available for$7/adult, $6/senior/student/military/child, includes admission. Duration: 25 minutes Exhibition and Special Programming Most people know the famous story of Betsy Ross stitching the first Stars & Stripes, but she is not the only flag maker who stitched her way into the fabric of Philadelphia s history. The new exhibit, Historic Threads: 250 Years of Flag Making in Philadelphia, explores the rich history of flag making, from 13-star flags stitched in 1776 to Presidential flags hand-embroidered today. For nearly 250 years, Philadelphia-made flags have flown in wars, marked America s westward expansion, and accompanied Presidents all over the world. Though the purpose, designs, and modes of production have all changed over time, flag making has been a stable opportunity for women s employment since the Colonial Period. Many women, some known, but mostly unknown, stitched America s most treasured emblem in independent shops, commercial factories, and government warehouses. The new exhibit highlights those women and the products of their labor. Meet Phillis at the Betsy Ross House - A free African American woman who was born into slavery in Philadelphia, Phillis went to school to learn to read and was then indentured where she acquired valuable domestic skills, such as cooking and laundry, which she used to support herself when she received her freedom at the age of 21.
