There are six terms in the school year and three main holidays: the Christmas holidays 2 weeks the Easter holidays 2 weeks the summer holidays 6 weeks. There are also short holidays in October, February and May. These are for one week or ten days. In Britain, Christmas is the biggest festival of the year. Families usually come together to celebrate it. People put up decorations and decorate a Christmas tree. On Christmas Day (25 th December), they open their presents and there is a traditional meal of turkey with vegetables, followed by Christmas pudding. The next day is a holiday, too. They call it Boxing Day. On Boxing Day, people visit friends or go to sport matches. At New Year, a lot of people have a party to see in the new year and watch 1
2 fireworks. At midnight they usually join hands and sing Auld Lang Syne. People also celebrate Easter in Britain. The Easter holiday lasts from Good Friday to Easter Monday. People eat sweet bread buns called hot-cross buns on Good Friday. On Easter Sunday people usually give chocolate Easter eggs. In some towns, there are Easter egg hunts in the parks for children.
