This is a question we receive often by interested Leagues/ Clubs. The process is relatively simple. Contact the MSYSA Director of Coaching via with your request. Be prepared to offer multiple dates. Usually the courses are held outside of the playing calendar. For example, most of the courses are held during winter and summer months. Since hosting and facility charges are incurred by MSYSA, the overhead costs must be warranted by the number of attendees. Hence the date and minimum number of attendees must meet the fiscal demands of the course. Many of the courses are held prior to the competitive season. This permits coaches to meet the required minimum coaching standards required by their respective playing leagues. Any League interested in hosting an MSYSA Coaching Education Course must follow the below guidelines: A. Contact the MSYSA Director of Coaching B. File the Request to Host Form with the MSYSA State Office. 1. Click on the Request to Host Coaching Clinic link on the Coaches page of the MSYSA Website Guidelines per course: D Course- ages and above 36 hours in length Testing involves: Written exams and Field Practical exams 25 Candidate Minimum E Course- ages hours in length Practice Field Training 25 Candidate Minimum Youth Module III - ages U6 to U12 combined Duration - 3 hours Cost - $ Candidate Minimum If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact MSYSA Director of Coaching, Bryan Thorp at x208 or via at bthorp@michiganyouthsoccer.org Michigan Soccer Magazine is published periodically by Michigan State Youth Soccer Association, 9401 General Dr., Ste. 120, Plymouth MI Bryan C. 4 EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Michigan State Youth Soccer Association Governance in youth sports organizations is a hot topic. Recently I have found increasing numbers of soccer organizations around the country discussing this subject. Our organization is no stranger to the governance debate and what it means for MSYSA and our members. Governance refers to the manner in which an organization will manage its affairs or business. In regards to a soccer league, its board of directors governance policies should outline how the board of directors will work toward achieving the mission of the organization. In essence the governance policy keeps the board focused on setting a vision for the organization while allotting a director or paid employee(s) the resources to accomplish set goals along the path towards achieving the organizational mission. Numerous league administrators have asked me Is it ok to pay board members? My response is that it is best to keep employees and board members duties and responsibilities separate. However, in the economic environment today volunteers are scarce and leagues improvise by having individuals wear numerous hats in order to accomplish various tasks. Leagues can elect to pay a board member in lieu of hiring an employee to manage the day to day operations of a league. But when a board makes the decision to pay an existing board member as a salaried employee of the organization that board member should not be able to vote at the board level. The now paid employee of the organization can make recommendations to the board for their decision but a paid employee of the organization should not have a vote at the board level. It is ok to hire employees and pay them. Actually, hiring paid employees can assist in the promotion, prosperity and longevity of an organization as board members come and go due to elections, term limits, Moving Forward and other factors. When hiring employees for your organization be sure to consider an appropriate wage per position and what can be afforded on an annual basis by your league or club. These wages should be worked into a budget for your league for the current year and at least a proposed budget 3 years out. All too often I hear instances of coaches, registrars, or league administrators receiving unrealistic compensation for their services. These wages should be left to the board of directors to determine but also be sure a conflict of interest does not exist between board members and paid employees. A conflict of interest occurs when an individual derives personal or close personal benefit from their position on the board. If a paid employee has a vote at the board level this individual can now effect policy to their personal benefit. Again, it is best to keep the duties of employees and duties of board members separate. I have heard stories of coaches or administrators collecting referee fees of up to $20 per game per child. Surely these fees are not correct and someone in addition to the referee is making money by collecting these fees. Rates of pay for referees are around $50, $60 or $70 per team per game to be split between the center and 2 assistant referees with the center making more than the 2 assistants. These rates are based on competitive games and are incremental due to age group i.e. U13, U15 and U17. These rates can vary based on league, competition level and number of referees on the field. If you are a parent or an administrator you need to be aware of issues involving administrators or coaches taking excess monies above and beyond reasonable and required rates. If you are a league or club administrator any such fees should be communicated very clearly to players and parents before the start or the season or before tryouts if you belong to a competitive club. Parents, it is ok to discuss with your league or club board of directors what fees need to be collected and how they are used. If fees are collected later in the season those should also be clearly communicated to parents. Often times clubs will collect tournament fees later in the season and parents should be made aware of what the fees are including tournament fees, referee fees, additional coaching fees, etc. I have also heard many leagues or clubs mention their bottom line in conversation. A positive bottom line is good for any organization non-profit or for profit especially if that organization plans on any longevity. Although the bottom line is important there are other key numbers that parents and administrators should be concerned with. If you can, ask for the programming expenses as a percentage of total expenses ratio. This percentage tells the consumer exactly as it states, the programming expenses as they influence overall expenses. A positive percentage is 80% or better. This means that the club or league is spending 80% or better of expenses directly on program related expenses. Although youth soccer is one of the cheaper recreational sports to play, expenses in youth soccer are inevitable. With some time and careful planning your league or club will be able to develop appropriate budgetary and governance policies to ensure children have the opportunity to enjoy youth soccer in your area for many years to come. If you have questions regarding how to develop these policies at your league or club please contact MSYSA Executive Director Tom Frisbie at tfrisbie@michiganyouthsoccer.org. 6 OLYMPIC DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM Michigan State Youth Soccer Association MSYSA ODP 101 Training Program Birth date range is January 1, 2000 to December 31, 2001 Purpose This Program is designed to provide additional technical training to those players seeking new challenges and help identify the level of u10 and u11 Michigan Players. The identification process will help our ODP Staff in its efforts to design and implement appropriate demands and objectives. The curriculum will be designed specifically for youth players; therefore, your sons and daughters will be assured a proper, age specific learning environment. Our philosophy is to develop skills and techniques to play The Beautiful Game of Soccer. The expression of the player and his/her ability is vital. We want to open the door of creativity for every player with a soccer ball. Plan The plan is for the ODP 101 Training Program to be offered in each SEASONAL YEAR. The Program is for the SERIOUS, COMPETITIVE PLAYER, seeking to make the first step into learning about the MSYSA ODP Program. There will be FOUR Training Centers across the State. West (Grand Rapids Area), Metro North (Oxford), Metro Central (Northville), and Central North (Mason): You must choose one and stick with it. Each Training site will host an Identification Camp to identify players for the ODP101 Training Pool. Cost of the Identification Camp is $ You must pre-register. After the ID Camp you may be chosen to continue on with the 101 Training Pool. ODP101 Training Pool will train 6 times total: 3x in the Fall and 3x in the Spring. The cost of the ODP101 Training Program is $ Improving Technique When players improve their technical ability they grow in confidence and give themselves a greater capacity to process information, which is vital in the development of young soccer players. Improving technique is paramount to achieving success at the higher levels. Improving Teamwork Another way to increase enjoyment of the game is through interaction with teammates, with small group activities which enhance skillful and imaginative play, for example (2v1, 2v2, 2v3, 3v3, and 4v4 to goals or targets) At a young age, players play in a number of positions to improve their all around understanding and knowledge of the game. Playing With High Standards Discipline is a key factor when learning the game of soccer. MSYSA expects all players to attend training. Arrive early. Shirts tucked in, socks pulled up displaying proper Soccer Attire. Equipment, including a soccer ball, shin-guards and water bottle are mandatory items. Format Each Training Session will go for 90 minutes. The first 45 minutes will be age appropriate training and the last 45 minutes will consist of 3v3 to 5v5 matches. Training will be based on improving technical needs of players along with small group tactics. After the training session, the players in attendance will then be mixed so that they can play 3v3/4v4/5v5 games. Training Format Players are identified and grouped by age and ability. The staff will teach and develop these players to have the confidence, and the technical ability to enjoy the game Positive Coaching Positive coaching from our staff is vitally important to our players development. We must ensure that our players are installed with confidence to play and have an understanding of the coach's instructions also that our players except constructive and negative information to improve them as soccer players and team members. Encouragement at this level is a massive motivational tool to making our players successful, creative and well rounded soccer players. Only players who have competed in the ODP 101 ID Camp can possibly move on to the 101 Training if chosen. Please read registration information below. 6 MICHIGAN SOCCER June 2010

29 Michigan State Youth Soccer Association TRYOUTS 2010 Birmingham United Football Club To ensure every committed player, along with family support, reaches their full potential by delivering every practice session and game in a professional and positive environment which promotes the love of the game." The Club Andy Chapman Director of Coaching Ian Fairbrother Director of Coaching Promising a child a soccer scholarship at the age of 11 is definitely not in our coaching philosophy at Birmingham United FC. Our main goal is to help fulfill the player s potential. Youth soccer at the very young ages is about building technical foundations in a very fun environment. The technical and tactical aspects in the game of soccer are for the most part age related. We try to implement these accordingly as the players move through their personal development. We realized that families are balancing busy lives, with full schedules and we try our best to accommodate this reality, while still retaining quality coaching in a positive and competitive environment. Andy played professional soccer for twenty-three years. He started his career with Arsenal of the English Premier League at age 16 and he turned pro the following year. He came to the United States in 1978 to play for the California Sunshine of the American Soccer League (ASL) before moving on to play for the Detroit Express. This proved to be a great move as the Express won the Championship in 1982 and Andy was named MVP of the league. Andy played indoor for Wichita, Baltimore, and Cleveland in the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) for 12 seasons. In 1990, he became playercoach of the Detroit Rockers of the National Professional Soccer League (NPSL) for four seasons, and later with the Detroit Neon/Safari for three seasons. Andy finished his career with 307 MISL goals, a tally which ranks 8th all time. In 2000 he came out of retirement to play for the Detroit Rockers, Making him one of only two players to play in four Andy playing for the Safari different decades. (You can also see Andy s jersey on display in the Soccer Hall of Fame, in New York State) Andy has coached youth soccer since His coaching philosophy has always remained the same: Build players, not teams; if you build the player, the teams will build themselves. U.S.S.F. "B" Coaching License Ian played professional soccer for sixteen years. He began as a youth playing for Manchester United and the Blackburn Rovers team in England. In addition, he was also selected to play on England s Junior National team at the age of 15. His favorite highlight was scoring a penalty for England against Holland in front of 100,000 spectators at Wembley Stadium and playing at Olympic Stadium in Berlin against Germany. He went on to sign his first professional contract with Liverpool F.C. of the English Premier League at the age of 16 and continued to play for Ian scores from the penalty spot at Wembley Stadium them for four years. Ian came to the United States to play for Fort Lauderdale and Miami of the North American Soccer League (NASL). After a few seasons, he signed on to the Wichita Wings of the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) and played indoor for the next ten years. This period included stints with the Detroit Rockers, Detroit Neon, and the Detroit Safari. While playing for the Detroit Safari he was asked to become Interim Head Coach for the remainder of the season after suffering an injury in the season. Although he played many years as a professional soccer player, Ian enjoys coaching youth soccer just as much as he enjoyed playing professionally. Ian currently has a USSF A coaching license and is a current member of the PFA (Professional Footballers Association) in England. Ian believes in coaching education courses and encourages all BUFC staff coaches to keep current with their coaching ideas, philosophies and education. Birmingham United FC has a new affiliation with the Michigan Wolves-Hawks Soccer Club. 36 COACHING Michigan State Youth Soccer Association Curriculum, Culture and Identity, Part 1 Bryan C. Thorp, MSYSA Director of Coaching A Curriculum provides a structured foundation by which players and coaches can develop. It is important to establish a level of criteria for both players and coaches in an effort to track progress as well as establish a common foundation for evaluation. Like steps up a ladder, the levels of the curriculum need to be progressive from A to Z. By establishing goals/ objectives at each level, both the player and the coach can be held to identifiable goal(s). Over time, the layers of goals will yield a culture, an identity for the club. In designing a curriculum, one can help shape the Club Culture. Like the Ajax of Cruyff, or the Latin Style of Argentina and Brazil, what is taught and when it is taught can be mold the way players eventually will play. Do you emphasize skill over tactics? At what age do you begin the process of teaching positions? Where does the competitive environment begin for youth players? Would you like to play like Barcelona? Think about their player rosters. How many Barcelona players were members of their youth system? Pique, Xavi, Ineista, Puyol, Krikic, Busquets and World Player of the Year, Messi, are just some examples. Their style for free flowing ball and player movement begins with their youth system. Even their coach, Guardiola is a product of their system. This is the Barcelona identity. Curriculum is a by-product of the mission and goals of the respective club. Do you want to play attractive soccer? Do you want to play effective soccer, or do you just simply want to win games and big trophies? Irrespective of your mission, it is necessary to find resources in playing fields, and coaches to provide the appropriate environment. What is your player to coach ratio? Can you effectively train small groups or large groups? How many fields? How often can you train? What are the training topics per skill, per team, per age group? Albeit the layers of a curriculum are many, it is necessary to have a clearly defined path towards development. Education is a long term process. Its development is more a marathon than a sprint. The value placed on planning is crucial to establishing an enduring club identity, and a rich culture for the beautiful game, soccer. Designing a Curriculum This is a follow up article to, Curriculum, Culture, and Identity. The impetus for this article comes from the response of many looking for guidance in their attempts to design a curriculum around their clubs/ associations. Albeit many clubs/ associations have different hurdles or elements they must overcome. The factors involved in designing a curriculum need to be considered. Factors: 1. Number of available coaches 2. Number of available fields 3. Number of players per coach 4. Access to players, e.g. how often are players available to train The objective below is to initiate thoughts as to how best service your players based upon a curriculum with clear objectives. The ideas below can be utilized in multiple fashions. For example, POOL TRAINING maybe the best case scenario for a club/association that has limited time, space and coaches available. Again, the purpose is to establish a base curriculum that can address the goals/objectives within the available resources. Good luck! Here is an example of a potential curriculum layout for ages u9-u10. This curriculum will stress fundamental player development. For example, the stress will be the fundamental soccer skills necessary to gain comfortableness on the ball. The ratios of player to ball ratio will not exceed 1 ball per 4 players. The majority of the training will involve 1 ball, 1 player to 1 ball and 2 players. The philosophy is to develop skills and techniques to play The Beautiful Game of Soccer: We want to open the door of creativity for every player with a soccer ball. 36 MICHIGAN SOCCER June 2010

37 Michigan State Youth Soccer Association What are the objectives for the u9-u10 Curriculum? 1. Establish a fundamental base of basic soccer skills a. Technical base- dribbling, running with the ball, passing, receiving, and finishing b. Teamwork base- introduction to general team concepts c. Attitude base- introduction to learning skills can be fun! Instill a passion!!! 2. Introduce 4-6 Basic Core Fakes/Feints COACHING How will we improve technique? The curriculum will involve an age appropriate activities. By this, we will establish a learning environment that will be age appropriate in nature. The fundamentals of soccer will be stressed regularly in training. Technique will be the foundation of every training session. The flow of training will involve: 1. Technical introduction (1 ball, 1 player, 1 ball, 2 players) 2. Technical application in small games 3. Game-like play (3v3, 4v4) In addition to the training formula, the format of training will involve 2x per week with the optional THIRD TECHNICAL day every other week. Hence, the format training format will be a 2-3 system. One week of training will be 2x, the other week of training will be 3x. How do we improve teamwork? Small group activities will help develop an understanding of technique within the game. Players will be exposed to multiple positions throughout the seasonal year. This will help their overall development of the necessary technical skills for the game of soccer. Exposing them to different areas of the field will help in their learning process of the application of technique. More Training Format Details The training formula will involve the following: A. Coach to Player ratio no higher than; 1:10 B. Week ONE- Player Training, 2x C. Week TWO- Player Training plus Pool Training D. Week THREE- Player Training, 2x E. Week FOUR- Player Training + Pool Training The THIRD TECHNICAL DAY will be in a POOL TRAINING Format. Simply, the training will consist of stations (2-3 stations) that vary in theme, ie dribbling/passing/finishing. The groups should be matched up by level(s) in order to keep the training environment challenging.
