If your username and password was set up by Dance Manitoba last year and you do not recall your information, please contact the office. To complete your registration, send in the required forms included within the 2014 Festival Registration Package along with your appropriate entry fees to Dance Manitoba on, or before the deadline of February 7, 2014 by 5 PM. You may also find all of the forms on our website at Festival Link. Payments can be made online through PayPal or by cheque. Cheques are payable to Dance Manitoba. Packages received without payment will be considered incomplete and will not be processed. Post-dated cheques will not be accepted. You are required to write only one cheque per school/group to cover the cost of all of your entries. Late entries will not be accepted. A receipt will be returned to you, confirming registration and any props you ve indicated that have been approved. Schedules will be forwarded once it has been completed, usually mid-april. Changes have been made to the Rules & Guidelines and are noted in red, please read carefully. We ask for your cooperation in providing volunteers. All schools are required to provide one volunteer for every block of one to five entries submitted. Volunteers must be available to work for a four-hour to five-hour shift, minimum. Please submit volunteer names with the Festival entry form(s). For scheduling, it is very important that we obtain volunteer commitments as soon as possible. All of the festival participants (dancers and teachers) are required to read and adhere to the Code of Etiquette for Festival Participants and Teachers. Please make sure that all of the participants and teachers from your school/group have been informed of the Code of Etiquette and you have signed the enclosed form. Packages received without the signed Code of Etiquette will be considered incomplete, and will not be processed. Please assist us by informing your festival participants that there will be NO recording/photography devices of any permitted to any of the festival sessions or the Gala Concert. 2 2014 RULES AND GUIDELINES Deadline for entries Friday, February 7, 5:00 pm Changes have been made, please read through carefully The Manitoba Provincial Dance Festival is open to participants of all ages and levels. As such, the choreography, costuming and music selections should be respectful of a family based audience. STAGE SIZE / CURTAINS / LIGHTING Pantages Playhouse Theatre: 26 x 35. No rehearsals permitted on stage. Stage curtains will remain open at all times. Lighting option of warm, cool or neutral wash will be available. PAYMENT FOR ENTRIES - Entry fees are to be paid in full by cheque or money order payable to Dance Manitoba Inc, or through Pay Pal. If paying by cheque, please submit ONE cheque per school/group. There will be no refunds on withdrawals or cancellations. TEACHERS/CHAPERONES - No recording devices in any capacity will be permitted in the backstage area. Make sure cell phones are turned OFF or SILENCED. If your phone rings, you will be asked to leave the area immediately. CLASSIFICATIONS, TIME LIMITS And ENTRY FEES PER DANCER GUIDELINES RULES Solo / $24.00 Maximum of 3:00 minutes Duo / $21.00 per dancer Maximum of 3:00 minutes Trio / $21.00 per dancer Maximum of 3:00 minutes Small Groups: 4 to 7 dancers / $20.00 per dancer Maximum of 4:00 minutes Large Groups: 8 to 15 dancers / $19.00 per dancer Maximum of 6:00 minutes Line Groups: 16 to 25 dancers / $19.00 per dancer Maximum of 6:00 minutes Production Numbers: 26 dancers and up / $18.00 Maximum of 12:00 minutes Student Choreography / $24.00 per entry Submitting real performance times will greatly assist in developing an accurate schedule. Ten (10) seconds grace will be given for mechanical and technical elements Workshops: Free for festival participants (sign up required). $5.00/workshop for nonfestival participants. Performances are timed from the moment the piece begins until the last movement of the piece. All entrances and exits must be executed as if in a black out. If they are choreographed, even if done in silence, will be timed. Entries exceeding the maximum time limit will have the following marks deducted: seconds/5 marks seconds/ 10 marks seconds /15 marks If a piece has gone overtime, the adjudicator will be informed and will adjust the final mark accordingly. ENTRIES GUIDELINES Any school/group participating in the Manitoba Provincial Dance Festival, must be a member in good standing. The Manitoba Provincial Dance Festival is open to all residents of Manitoba. Non- Manitoban residents may enter as a SPECIAL ENTRY. All entries receive a verbal, recorded and written adjudication and award. Performers may require proof of age to verify information on the entry form. Dance Manitoba Inc. and the hosting facility are not responsible for personal injury or property loss. REGULAR ENTRIES Solos, duos or trios within the age categories of 7 & under to 19 & under are eligible for scholarship selection(s). Small, Large and Line Groups within the age categories of 7 & under to 19 & under, and Multigenerational entries are eligible for Adjudicator s Group Choice selection. RULES If a group performance is entered into more than one discipline, it will only be eligible to be selected ONCE as an Adjudicator s Group Choice selection. Sportsmanlike behavior is expected at all times. Failure to display proper decorum could result in immediate disqualification. (See Code of Conduct page 8) AWARDS There are five levels of awards for Regular Entries, Production Numbers, and age categories of 25 & under, and 26 & over. Gold Honours: 96 to 100 Gold: 90 to 95 High Silver: 86 to 89 Silver: 80 to 85 Bronze: 60 to 79 2

3 SPECIAL ENTRIES within the following categories are NOT ELIGIBLE for Scholarship selections or Adjudicator s Group Choice selections: Age categories of 25 & under, and 26 & over Production Numbers Novice Entries ( see below ) Student Choreography Entries ( see below ) Non-Manitoban residents NOVICE ENTRY This category is for dancers with 3 or less years of dance training OR for dancers who are not at the general expected levels for their age classification. The Novice category is to assist the dancer in gaining performance experience within the festival environment, with the goal of future participation as a regular entry. STUDENT CHOREOGRAPHY entries receive a Student Choreography certificate. The adjudicator will focus on all elements of creating a performance piece. Critical feedback will be given with respect to vocabulary used, theme, mood, style, structure and flow, the use of space, music and the readiness of the performers. CHOREOGRAPHERS must be present on stage for the adjudication. Entry fee for Student Choreography is $24.00 per entry. A Student Choreography entry may also be entered as a Regular Entry to receive feedback on the dancers performance. AWARDS There are three levels of awards for the Novice Category. Gold: Silver: 76 to 86 Bronze: 75 & under MARKING AND ADJUDICATION Each performance receives a written, recorded and verbal adjudication. The adjudicator adjudicates each performance piece on their own accord, and shares with the performers feedback and observations to assist the performers in future development of technique and performance qualities. There is no limit to the number of awards given in any class and session. Verbal adjudications take place at the end of each session on stage and will follow an ABA format. Adjudication sheets will be distributed in a sealed envelope with the presentation of the certificates on stage. Recorded adjudications will be mailed. NUMBER OF ENTRIES ALLOWED PER DANCER A participant may enter only once in the Solo category in a given discipline. A participant may enter only once in a DUO in the same age category and discipline. A participant may enter only once in a TRIO in the same age category and discipline. Only a participant who takes part of a public school dance program and a private dance school may participate TWICE in the same age category and discipline for Small Groups, Large Groups, Line Groups and Production Numbers. AGE CATEGORIES In solo classes, the age of the dancer will be determined by the age of the participant as of January 1, Each solo classification will have its own age category up to 25 & under, and 26 & over. A group with an average age of 9.5 would be in the 9 Years & Under category. A group with an average age of 9.6 would be in the 11 Years & Under category. If a question should arise concerning the age of a participant, proof of age must be provided in a timely manner. 7 years & under / 9 years & under / 11 years & under / 13 years & under / 15 years & under / 17 years & under / 19 years & under / 25 years & under / 26 years & over and Multigenerational - Age range from the youngest to the oldest dancer is equal to or greater than ten (10 years). DISCIPLINES BALLET - From classical to contemporary ballet; this dance form is based on the traditional techniques and elements defined by the terminology of classical ballet. Without a specific story line; placement, line and musicality play important roles in this discipline. BALLET POINTE - An advanced stage of classical ballet for female dancers performed en pointe. Pas de Deux performances may be entered in this category. Pointe work requires lengthy training and conditioning and is not recommended for dancers under the age of twelve (12) years. DEMI-CHARACTER - Demi-Character tells a story through the vocabulary of classical ballet. A specific character is represented throughout the performance and uses theatrical mime within the dance. Demi-Character may be danced en pointe or demi-pointe. Examples of a demi-character entry: Little Red Riding Hood from Sleeping Beauty, the Mouse King from Nutcracker. CHARACTER - Based on the traditional dances of a region or a country interpreted within a ballet setting. Examples of a character entry: Mazurka from Swan Lake. INTERPRETATIVE - Neo-classical, contemporary, and lyrical ballet incorporates traditional techniques and elements defined by classical ballet terminology. HIP HOP - The Hip Hop cultural movement began among African American s in New York City in the early 1970 s. This dance form is based on the traditional techniques and elements of hip hop, and can incorporate breaking, locking and popping. JAZZ - Traditional jazz dance is based in the early American jazz years and has been influenced by the African and American culture. Jazz dance parallels classical technique, and can include Street Jazz, Stylized Jazz, Contemporary Jazz and themed pieces. 3

4 LYRICAL JAZZ - Based in jazz technique complimented by a fusion of lyrical, modern and ballet techniques. It should interpret the accompanying music or lyrics, in an emotionally expressive way. The movement attempts to illustrate the actual meaning and emotion communicated in the song. This dance form can included Contemporary Lyrical. MODERN - Based on the principles of modern techniques incorporating space, force, weight and time. Modern may draw on the influences of recognized techniques of Graham, Limon, Cunningham and other current influences. MUSICAL THEATRE - A combination of dance, drama and live vocals. Material may be drawn from Broadway musicals, movies or original creations. Lip syncing and voice overs on soundtracks are not permitted. Adjudication will be based on three categories ; voice at 33%, dance at 33%, and performance/characterization at 33%, for the calculation of the total mark. NATIONAL - A dance form of specific style, based on the traditions and cultures of a country, geographic region, or ethnic group. OPEN - Ideal for interdisciplinary choreography or performance dance forms for which there are no specific categories. Open entries must have dance as the main component but may incorporate non-traditional elements. TAP - Using musical rhythms executed in shoes with metal taps on, coordinating head, body and arm movements. CHOREOGRAPHY, LYRICS AND THE USE OF THE STAGE Please use age appropriate choreography, costuming and music. CHOREOGRAPHY Any performance displaying choreography that is lewd or offensive will be strictly prohibited. If a performance piece is stopped at the discretion of the adjudicator, it will be automatically disqualified and will NOT be adjudicated. LYRICS The use of lyrics that are defamatory in nature, racist, sexist or otherwise offensive are not permitted. At the decision of the Adjudicator, five marks will be deducted from the final mark for any inappropriate language or content, and the entry will not be eligible for scholarship selection or Adjudicator s Group Choice. It is strongly recommended that the Studio Director / Senior Artistic Staff have their faculty submit lyrics for review. USE OF THE STAGE All performers must enter the stage from the wings. No theatre seating / no orchestra pit entrances allowed, or sitting at end of the stage permitted. The use of rosin will be permitted only during ballet sessions. When rehearsing in studio, all entrances, exits and crossovers should be rehearsed with the scrim and wings in mind. WARDROBE AND MAKE UP GUIDELINES The use of costumes is optional. If dancers are in costume, please select age appropriate costumes. Any piece incorporating a costume change in the choreography must provide one supervisor and a maximum of two others to control the placement and collection of costume pieces to ensure safety in the wings and backstage area at all times. Performers are not to throw costumes into the wings. Any piece incorporating elaborate make up must be applied off site or within the assigned dressing rooms. Common areas are not to be used as dressing rooms. RULES Any costuming with visible identifiable school/crew logos and or names is not permitted. At the discretion of the Backstage Manager, costume alterations may be required. For example, needing to cover up a visible school logo If the use of elaborate make-up (PERMITTED ON face area only) or costume selections cause interruptions to the festival schedule where overtime is incurred and / or damages to the performance space occur, additional charges will be the responsibility of the participating studio. REPLACEMENT OF A DANCER Should a dancer need to be replaced, inform the Executive Director in writing with the replacements full name and birth date. If a replacement dancer affects the standing of the original entry, for example, the average age of the group, the entry will not be eligible for scholarship selections or Adjudicator s Group Choice INJURY OR ILLNESS Should an entry be missing a dancer due to injury or illness at the time of the performance and does not change the classification, there will not be any change on its eligibility status. Should the loss of the dancer change the classification, it will be performed at the scheduled time and the EMCEE will inform the adjudicator and audience prior to the performance. Time limits will apply to the original entry. For example, if the loss of a dancer affects the Large Group classification, the 6:00 minute time limit applies. The piece will not be eligible for scholarship selection or Adjudicator s Group Choice. REPEATING A PERFORMACE Repeat performances will be allowed only at the discretion of the adjudicator. 4

5 COSTUME/HAND HELD/SET PROPS and STAGE DRESSINGS The use of hand held props, set props and stage dressings are designed to help convey the characterization of the performance piece. Set props and stage dressings will be called backstage at the top of each session. They must be removed by the end of the session. GUIDELINES COSTUME PROPS This is a prop that lives on the performer(s) costume(s). If it is worn simply as decoration, then it is considered a part of the performers costume. If the performer handles the piece in front of the audience, then it is considered a hand help prop, set prop or a stage dressing. HAND HELP PROPS Any object that the performer carries in her/his hand(s). SET PROPS Any object that is larger than a hand held prop. For example; chairs, a stool, mime boxes. STAGE DRESSINGS Any freestanding object or piece placed on stage that is not outlined from the above definitions. All props will be used at the performers own risk. All props must be: made of non-breakable materials, assembled (if required), before bringing to backstage area, brought to the backstage/dressing room/korol studio by using the stairwell, rehearsed and handled safely at all times Stage Proofing: Props such as chairs and stools must have floor protectors. If using magnifying glasses, remove the glass lens. If using containers; the container must be empty Any set props and stage dressings should be used for 25% of the piece. RULES All props must be approved by the Executive Director prior to the commencement of the Festival. Last minute props may not be approved. Props pre-approved in principle but deemed unsafe for performance will not be permitted. Failure to abide by the rules governing the use of props will result in the piece not being performed The use of props with the following will not be permitted: Made of glassware, is powder based, breakable. Any form of liquid (including water), gels, aerosols, glitter, or confetti, etc. Any substance which may affect the stage surface. Have clear identifiable school/crew logos and or names. Property of the Pantages Playhouse Theatre or Dance Manitoba There will be a festival crew member present to assist with larger props. Directives will be given by the Backstage Manager when necessary. Set Props and Stage Dressings can be stored the day of the performance in the assigned area located in the Korol Lobby. They must be removed from the theatre by the end of the day. Any Set Props or Stage Dressings found left behind by the end of day will be discarded by the Festival Staff. LIVE and RECORDED ACCOMPANIMENT GUIDELINES RULES LIVE ACCOMPANIMENT Only one accompanist per performance. The use of a piano will be available in the wings for the MUSICAL THEATRE category ONLY. Accompanists will have the same stand by call as the performers. The use of the piano must be clearly marked on the entry form. Accompanists other than pianists may be refused at the discretion of the Executive Director. If the accompanist is on stage during the performance, the accompanist will be considered as a performer, and the entry form should reflect accordingly. For example, a soloist with a flutist on stage would be entered as an duo. LABELIING MUSIC Please do not use masking tape to label your music, as it can jam the equipment. Music labels must be clearly marked with the Session Number, Title of Piece, Discipline, classification and age category and Name of Studio. For example: Session 42, All That Jazz, Musical Theatre, Solo 17 years & under/ XYZ Dance Academy. If reusing the same recording for multiple sessions, the recording must be properly re-labeled. It is strongly encouraged to utilize and fill out the performance information slip prior to arriving to the theatre. Submitting the slip along with the music to the Backstage Manager will stream line the information gathering. PICK UP OF RECORDED MUSIC Recorded music will be available for pick up at the music table throughout the festival. Any recordings not picked up by the end of the festival will be discarded. RECORDED ACCOMPANIMENT Bring TWO copies of your recorded music; a performance and a rehearsal copy. Record your music at a reasonable recording level, and ensure it is a clear and high quality recording. Submit your music to the Backstage Manager 30 minutes prior to the start of the session. Music for a festival day may be delivered to the Backstage Manager after the first session of the day has started. If the music is submitted late, one (1) point will be deducted from the final mark. PLAYBACK The sound technician will not be responsible for cues or fades of music. In the event that your CD will not playback, your backup CD will be played from the equipment set up in the wings. The use of an ipod will be permitted as a backup only. If using your ipod for your rehearsal and as your secondary emergency back-up please create an individual playlist for each and every routine with only that one song in the playlist. This allows the song to play in its entirety without jumping to the next song. The playlist must be clearly labeled with the title of the piece. It is also important to make sure that the repeat function is not enabled. At the discretion of the Stage Manager, the ipod may be played from the sound booth or backstage. 5

6 STANDBY TIME AND ACCESS TO DRESSING ROOMS GUIDELINES RULES Access to the dressing rooms is sixty (60) minutes prior to the first session of each festival day. Each studio will be assigned a dressing room; the schedule will be posted at the registration table, in the Green Room and on each dressing room door. The daily schedule is split into morning, afternoon and evening sessions. Due to restrictions on space availability, there will be crossovers from morning, afternoon and evening sessions, and full cooperation is expected of all. Standby time for teachers and dancers is one half hour (30 minutes) to the commencement of the scheduled session. Teachers/representatives are to report to the Backstage Manager in the Dressing Room area at that time. Once the standby time has commenced, performers and teachers/representatives are to remain in the dressing room areas until Stage Management calls for places. Dancers will be standing by backstage from one to two full performance piece(s). The use of the dressing rooms is a PRIVILEDGE and full cooperation is expected in sharing them. Please report abuse of dressing room privileges to the Backstage Manager. Failure to cooperate could result in immediate loss of dressing room privileges for the studio. A teacher or assigned chaperone must be with the performer(s) at all times while in the dressing room and backstage areas, regardless of the performer(s) age(s). CODE OF ETIQUETTE ANY teacher or dancer found to be disrespectful to another person may have the immediate and direct result of NOT performing and being DISQUALIFIED from further participation in the festival. Please review the Code of Etiquette with all of your teachers and participants. SCHOLARSHIPS AND ADJUDICATOR S GROUP CHOICE SELECTIONS The decisions of the adjudicators are final. SCHOLARSHIPS will be awarded to Solos, Duos and Trios within the age categories of 7 years & under to 19 years & under. Scholarships are awarded to those whose talent, skill and appreciation for their art form was most evident to the adjudicator, and does not necessarily reflect the highest marks given. The awarded funds are intended for the recipients continued dance studies. Scholarships will be distributed based on the number of entries received per discipline and age category*: 1 50 entries 1 Junior and 1 Senior Scholarship will be awarded entries 2 Junior and 2 Senior Scholarships will be awarded entries 3 Junior and 3 Senior Scholarships will be awarded. 277 entries and up 4 Junior and 4 Senior Scholarships will be awarded. *At the discretion of Dance Manitoba the allocation of Junior and Senior scholarships may vary in a discipline. For example, if a discipline has 20 junior entries and 70 senior entries, the allocation of the 4 scholarships would be 1 junior and 3 senior. Junior scholarships will be awarded within the age categories of 7 years & under to 13 years & under. Senior scholarships will be awarded within the age categories of 15 years & under to 19 years & under. A scholarship awarded to a duo or trio will be evenly divided between the performers. The piece must have been entered as a solo, duo or trio and have enough performers at the time of the performance. (See Number of Dancers ). Scholarship recipients will receive their scholarships during the scholarship presentation at the opening of the Gala Concert. One junior and one senior scholarship recipient per discipline will be selected by the respected adjudicator to perform in the Gala Concert. ADJUDICATOR S GROUP CHOICE will be selected from Small, Large and Line Groups within the age categories of 7 years and under to 19 years and under, and Multigenerational entries. If there are more than 51 regular group entries in a discipline, the adjudicator will select one JUNIOR and one SENIOR Adjudicator s Group Choice performance. Selection is the adjudicators choice, and the piece(s) selected demonstrates talent, skill and appreciation for the art form. If there are 50 group entries or less, the adjudicator will select ONE Adjudicator s Group Choice performance. *At the discretion of Dance Manitoba, the selections of a Junior and a Senior Adjudicator s Group Choice may vary in a discipline. The selected performance does not necessarily reflect the highest mark given. All Adjudicator s Group Choice selections will perform in the Gala Concert. If a group performance is entered into more than one discipline, it will only be eligible to be selected ONCE as an Adjudicator s Group Choice selection. 6

7 GALA CONCERT The Gala Concert serves as the closing ceremony of the Annual Manitoba Provincial Dance Festival. Tickets are available for purchase at the merchandise cart throughout the festival. The Gala Concert WILL CONSIST ONLY of the following presentations/performances: Scholarship Presentation and selected scholarship recipients performances Presentation of the Professional Conduct Award Performances of the JUNIOR and SENIOR Adjudicator s Group Choice selections ENTRY TO THE BACKSTAGE AREAS, THEATRE AND BALCONY Teachers and dancers MUST have their performer or teachers cards with them in order to have access to the backstage areas, theatre and balcony. Access to the balcony is restricted to festival staff and teachers ONLY. To respect theatre etiquette, and to be courteous to all present, audience members and participants are to enter and exit the theatre only when the theatre doors are opened by festival staff and volunteers. Any teacher or dancer without a festival issued card wanting to observe sessions must pay the appropriate admission fee. FESTIVAL SCHEDULE AND PROGRAM ORDER FESTIVAL SCHEDULE - Dance Manitoba will a first draft of the schedule directly to the contact person of each participating school/group. It is imperative that the draft schedule is reviewed to ensure that all of the entries have been scheduled correctly. If errors are found, contact Dance Manitoba IMMEDIATELY with the necessary information. PROGRAM ORDER -The program will proceed normally as outlined in the printed festival program. However, Dance Manitoba reserves the right to alter the order of the program if necessary to accommodate unforeseen circumstances. If there is a scheduling conflict listed in the program, you MUST inform the BACKSTAGE MANAGER no later than TWO DAYS of the scheduled session. Scheduling issues brought to Dance Manitoba s attention after the said timeline MAY NOT be granted. Any changes in the schedule will be announced by the festival MCEE. KOROL STUDIO The Korol Studio is provided for a brief warm up and quick run through of pieces. The Korol studio will be monitored by a Festival Staff member. At times Festival workshops are scheduled in the Korol Studio, check the workshop schedule and plan accordingly. PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT AWARD Every year, a participating school or group is acknowledged by the Dance Manitoba community for its behavior and attitude during the Manitoba Provincial Dance Festival. Each participating school/group will have the opportunity to nominate another school/group who they think are deserving of the award. Ballots will be collected towards the end of the festival and the winner will be announced during the closing ceremonies of the festival. VOLUNTEER / TEACHERS LOUNGE The Volunteer Lounge will also be made available for teachers ONLY. You must have your festival issued teacher card to access the lounge. The lounge is intended for teachers to have a quiet place to unwind and relax. Any teacher found abusing the use of the lounge will lose their privilege. If you have any questions, info@dancemanitoba.org or call the office at DEADLINE FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 2014, 5:00 PM Mail or drop off festival packages and fees to: Dance Manitoba Inc Market Avenue Winnipeg, MB R3B 0P7 VOLUNTEERS Each independent/schools/group is asked to provide a volunteer for one volunteer shift for every 1 to 5 entries submitted. A volunteer shift is approximately four to five hours in length. Volunteers will receive a complimentary Festival Day Pass for every shift worked that is to be used on a different day. Dance Manitoba will provide a parking voucher for the time volunteering at the festival. Any independent / school / group not meeting their required volunteer shifts will be assessed a fee of $30.00 per volunteer shift missing. Independent / schools / groups not fulfilling the $30.00 fee per volunteer shift missing may be refused participation in subsequent festivals. VISUAL RECORDINGS BY AAA VIDEO RECORDING By the studio director/owner/teacher signing the official entry form, you, your students and parents are consenting to the use of videotaping by AAA Video Recording. 7

8 CODE OF CONDUCT EXPECTED CONDUCT OF PARTICIPANTS AND TEACHERS at the MANITOBA PROVINCIAL DANCE FESTIVAL (Please make copies and or post at your studio) Dance Manitoba takes pride in presenting the Manitoba Provincial Dance Festival. The goals of the festival are to provide a safe and professional event where the participants and teachers can celebrate, learn and grow from the performance(s) and feedback from the adjudicators. Instructions given by Festival staff, Pantages Playhouse Theatre staff and volunteers are to be followed. Failure to display proper decorum in all areas of the venue could result in not performing, immediate disqualification, along with the possibility of not returning to any future festival events. Any teacher found to be recruiting students from one studio to another will be asked to leave the venue immediately. IN THE THEATRE The use of cell phones (in any capacity) or pagers are not permitted No food or drinks Enter the theatre, only when doors are opened for you No recording devices of any kind No cat calls or talking during performances and adjudications IN THE LOBBY Food and drinks are permitted, please clean up after yourselves No communicating with the adjudicator The lobby and the lobby washrooms are not to be used as dressing rooms BACKSTAGE AREAS (WINGS, DRESSING ROOMS, GREEN ROOM, KOROL STUDIO) Stage Management and the staff of Dance Manitoba are in charge Only those with an assigned with a designated festival card will be permitted (Performer, Teacher or Chaperone cards) Participants and teachers are on standby 30 minutes prior to their session, and are to remain in dressing room areas until called to the wings by Stage Management. Under fire regulations, hallways and doorways must be kept free of clutter. Performers must not do anything that may damage the stage area, including flooring, the scrim, nor do anything that may endanger or harm others. (i.e.: no liquids onstage, no use of baby powder, no footwear that will damage dance floor) BACKSTAGE No talking in the wings No food or water in the backstage areas or in performances One supervisor (teacher or chaperone) over the age of 18 must be present in the backstage areas to supervise the dancers and to provide necessary information to Stage Management team, and to be on hand should any situation arise with respect to the performers regardless of the performers ages. DRESSING ROOMS Dressing room assignments will be posted at the registration table, in the Green Room and on all dressing room doors. The use of the dressing room is a privilege and is to be shared cooperatively and kept clean. Failure to do so will result in an immediate loss of dressing room privileges. Only teachers and designated chaperones (max of 2 additional chaperones) allowed assisting with costume changes. KOROL STUDIO The Korol studio is provided for a brief warm up and a quick run through of pieces. Those failing to share the space in a cooperative manner will lose immediate rehearsal privileges. No group may reserve the space. The Korol Studio will be monitored by a Festival Staff. Participants are not to use the Korol studio during the session they are performing in. In the event of workshop in the Korol studio, participants may use the Korol Studio lobby. CHECK THE WORKSHOP SCHEDULE AND PLAN ACCORDINGLY. 8

11 Code of Etiquette Sign Off 2014 Manitoba Provincial Dance Festival May 13 30, 2014 Dear Festival Participant, Dance Manitoba would like to remind all of the participating groups/schools that the conduct of your dancers and teachers is the responsibility of your group/school. Remember your dancers are representing your school. It is expected that all participants and teachers will follow the Code of Etiquette. Review the Code of Etiquette, and the Rules & Guidelines, with all of the participants from your school (dancers, teachers, teaching assistants and chaperones). A poster of the Code of Etiquette has been included to be posted in your studio for all your participants and your parents. Most of the information is common sense and self-explanatory. If for any reason you have questions about the Code of Etiquette, please contact Dance Manitoba for further information. Please note those participants who fail to follow the Code of Etiquette will be warned and advised by the Executive Director immediately to conduct themselves accordingly. Blatant disregard of the Code of Etiquette may result in not performing and/or the participant s or teacher s studio being disqualified from further participation in the Festival at the discretion of Dance Manitoba. In order to be assured that all of the Festival participants have been familiarized with the Code of Etiquette, the contact person from each school/group must sign a declaration to that effect, therefore, making them responsible for the conduct of their participants. It is Dance Manitoba s goal that the Festival be a positive educational experience for all of the participants. 12 PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT AWARD Dance Manitoba is asking you, the community to select the 2014 Provincial Dance Festival Professional Conduct Award Recipient. Every participating school/group will have the opportunity to nominate another school/group who they think is deserving of the award for its conduct during the festival. Dance Manitoba encourages its participants and teachers to share with their studio owner / director who they think should be recognized for the award. When considering a nominee, please consider the following: Regard of the Code of Etiquette Respectful to others Regard to the theatre staff and crew, the festival staff and volunteers Cooperation of sharing the space (Dressing Rooms and the Korol Studio) Encouraging and supportive towards others Use of appropriate language. Nominations will be done by your studio owner/director and will be collected towards the end of the festival. The winner will be announced at the Gala Performance. 12

13 STUDENT CHOREOGRAPHY HAVE YOU EVER BEEN CURIOUS ON HOW TO CREATE AND DEVELOP A PERFORMANCE PIECE? If you answered YES, than this is your opportunity to experiment with your own create and develop your ideas and skills. As the choreographer, YOU make all of the decisions regarding your piece. The adjudicator will give you critical feedback with respect to the vocabulary used, theme, mood, style, structure and flow, use of the space, musicality and the readiness of your performers. Student Choreography entries are adjudicated separately from other entries, and will not be given a mark. You and your dancers will receive a Student Choreography certificate. 14 VOLUNTEER SIGN UP Support the Provincial Dance Festival & Receive a Pass for Free Admission! May 13 30, 2014 at the Pantages Playhouse Theatre Each school or group participating in the Festival is required to provide volunteers who are able to work at least one 4-hour to 5-hour shift, minimum. Volunteers will receive complimentary parking during the festival shift worked. It would be extremely helpful to have more volunteers included than your studio requirements. Box Office, Souvenir Sales, Ushers, Dancers Certificates, Registration Table Volunteers enjoy a free festival day pass for working a scheduled shift. Passes cannot be used for the Festival Gala. Unless otherwise confirmed with Dance Manitoba, volunteers must be 17 years of age or older at the time of the Festival. Due to the volume of volunteer positions and shifts, volunteers will be ed first, and all shifts are on a first come first serve basis. Please sign up below.
