1 CITY OF MT. RAINIER MARYLAND Issue 296 March 2012 The challenge in providing services for youth offenders transitioning back into the community is to replace negative influences with intensive and comprehensive training and support. MRPD Street- Corps provides academic remediation, employment and training services, support services, counseling/ case management, leadership development, job placement, and follow-up services to youth offenders. The goal of StreetCorp is to connect at-risk youth and young offenders to their community through attainment of their high school diploma, training and employment, when and where possible. In addition to minimizing recidivism among youth participants, this program design allows program participants to serve as models for peers and curb peer involvement in delinquent behaviors. Through the innovative alignment of academic skill remediation with workforce development training, IN THIS ISSUE MRTV Schedule 2 Community Building 3 Fiscal Year 13 Budget Calendar 4 Green Happenings 5 Winter Safety Tips 8 Public Works Schedule 9 Directory of Important Contacts 10 youth participants are poised to advance academically and professionally by being able to sit for and pass credentialing/certificating programs in their area of choice. This program leverages the area's Gateway Arts District designation and the successes of existing programs operating in close proximity to Mount Rainier for positive youth development. Participants establish a connection to their community through its assets while learning work, academic, and life skills that will allow them to contribute to the community in positive, meaningful ways. The program participants receive progressive academic skillbuilding toward the attainment of a GED and/or at least 1-2 gradelevel improvements as measured by TABE. In addition to academic remediation, participants receive training in four (4) areas: A/V technology, deconstruction, urban farming and weatherization/ renewable energy. Progressions through these training experiences are closely aligned with the development of academic skills needed to attain CONTINUED ON PAGE 5 Maryland Milestones, a program established in 2012 by ATHA Inc., highlights the many firsts and unique which have occurred in the Anacostia Trails Heritage Area. This program brings information about these milestones to the public and makes connections between the history, culture, and nature of the region. Additionally, the Maryland Milestones program emphasizes the importance that travel, trade, and communication have played in the region through turnpikes, highways, parkways, aviation, telegraphs, and train travel. In Spring 2012 look for the formal rollout of this program with new signage, milestone markers, and interpretive program trails. MARCH 2012 MESSAGE
