3 4-H Enrollment Many of you have already re-enrolled in 4-H for the H year. Thank you! If you have not, please go to ia.4honline.com and log in with your 4-H family and password. It is okay to select the I forgot my password option if you do not remember your password. There are many great help sheets at: for you to use when re-enrolling. If you do not re-enroll, we cannot tell if you are participating for the H year, we cannot enter your animals after weighin s, and you will not receive important information from the newsletter about upcoming events, activities and deadlines. If you have questions about enrolling, please contact the Extension Office Beef Verification Deadline: February 1! Exhibitors who weighed-in market beef animals, either at the Cass County weigh-in on December 15 or at another location, please remember to log in to 4-H online in January to verify your market beef animals by February 1. This is a very important step in the ID process for all exhibitors and helps us to ensure that all data was enter correctly after weigh-ins. If you have any questions or concerns, please call the Extension Office and we will be happy to help you with this process. Breed steers for state fair: the breed and registration number must be identified in 4-H online by February 1. Please contact the Extension Office before February 1 to complete this step. Registration papers are required for state fair check-in in August. If a breed is not identified by February 1, the animal will only be eligible to show as a crossbreed. You must declare at time of weigh-in if you are planning to exhibit at the 2019 Iowa State Fair. Breeding Heifers: NEW! All breeding heifers are required to have two forms of identification (shown below in images). They must have a tattoo and either a registration number, calfhood vaccination number (in ear) or a 4-H ear tag. If you did not bring your breeding heifer to beef weigh in on December 15, please contact the extension office to make other arrangements. All breeding heifers must be ID d by May 15. Thank you to all volunteers, parents, and participants for you patience on weigh-in day. We had a beautiful day and had another successful weigh-in with H and FFA calves ID d. 3

4 General Livestock Update Our livestock project areas are some of our most traditional projects that teach a great deal of personal life management skills, as well as project mastery and knowledge. While they are a vital part of our program, they often require more rules and regulations for safety and organizational purposes. The best way to participate in a livestock project area is to become educated on those rules and regulations. Here are resources you can familiarize yourself with. 4-H 202: UPDATED! the official document on identification, ownership and eligibility for livestock shows. You are responsible for following these guidelines when exhibiting 4-H livestock. You can get this from the Extension Office or online at: The State 4-H Website: this is located at This website is designed by State 4-H staff and has many resources for exhibitors and their families. Aksarben Stock Show Updates The Aksarben Stock Show will transition to a junior livestock show format in Under the junior show model, youth from 9 to 19 years of age are eligible for the competition with no prerequisite of youth organization affiliation. (4-H membership not required) The entry information will all be handled through AKSARBEN. It will be the families responsibility to make their entry. Link to AkSarBen: Club Visits Again this year, Shelby is looking to make Club Visits. If this is something you and your club would be interested in, please let me know a good time and we will make it work! I am very excited to visit with you and see all the hard work you are putting in during the H year. Share your 4-H Experience Are you doing something really neat in your 4-H club or in your project area? Share it with your local newspapers; they are interested in showcasing your 4-H experience! Write up an article about what you are doing, share a few photos and get published in the newspaper. This is a great way to fulfill the communication requirement in your project area and share the great things you are doing in 4-H! If you need contact information for the local newspaper, contact the Extension Office. Plan now for Project Success Right now is a great time to start planning for project success this 4-H year. Set some personal and project goals to work on this year. Be sure to sign up in 4-H online for any project area that you may be interested in. This will help us get you the information needed for those project areas throughout the year. Check out project resources on the state 4-H website: Leaders Training 2019 Annual Leader s Training will be held on February 25 at 6 PM here at the Cass County Community Center. Please RSVP by February 15 if you plan on attending. 4

5 Citizenship Washington Focus Looking for an experience of a lifetime? Look no further than the Citizenship Washington Focus trip where you as a 9-12 grader can travel to visit Washington D.C. and the National 4-H Center. Experience leadership and citizenship on a higher level with this epic opportunity on June 14-22, Trip highlights include the Flight 93 Museum, Capital Hill and the Smithsonian Museums. Youth will also meet with the Iowa Congressional and Senate delegations to discuss legislative issues. Besides tours and workshops, 4 -H ers will have time for socializing and meeting new friends! Cost of the trip is $1,850. This includes lodging, transportation, tour site admissions and most meals. The Cass County Endowment offers financial scholarships to assist with the costs for individuals who are interested in attending these events. Registration deadline is Friday, January 15, To learn more about the trip and to get registration information contact the Extension Office or visit: Race Across Iowa Challenge It s Back! The challenge has started as of December 1. It is not too late to join! The challenge will run through May 31. Clubs can take part in a Healthy Living Club challenge by introducing a variety of healthy living practices during club meetings each month and earn miles as they race across Iowa. This 1,400 mile route destination sure fulfills the definition of a challenge, but by working together as a team and setting goals to incorporate healthy living practices each month, we hope to see you meet or surpass the final mile by the end of June! Please plan to participate! How does it work? Each month, your club submits that month s tracker. The club will designate who will do this each month, whether it be an adult leader or a youth leader. Be sure to submit your progress monthly so we can publish results and track by county and across the state. Don t wait until the end of the challenge to submit your monthly accomplishments, because each monthly tracker is due by the 10th of the following month. The 5 clubs that log the most miles and complete the route by the end of May will be recognized for their accomplishments at the Iowa State Fair. Visit to register your club. 6 4-H Club Volleyball Tournament The 4-H club volleyball tournament is scheduled for Sunday, January 20 at the CAM High School and Anita Wellness Center; games will begin at 2 PM. Teams must give their captains name to the Extension Office by Friday, January 11. Just call or xcass@iastate.edu to give us your captains name. Team captains will be sent schedules following the January 11 deadline. Rules for the H Club Volleyball Tournament are on the last page of this January newsletter. DuPont Pioneer Seed Grant The objective of these grants is to stimulate local 4 -H clubs in Iowa to plan and carry out community improvement activities by providing seed money needed to make the projects successful. Applications are due to the Extension office by January 30, With questions contact the Extension Office. State Recognition Application State recognition applications open! State 4-H Recognition is the process in which senior 4-H members in grades 9-12 can apply to be selected for special statewide opportunities such as awards and trips. The purpose of this event is to provide an avenue for youth recognition, and to provide young people with an opportunity to practice and grow leadership, communications, and college and career readiness skills through application and interview activities. Applications for Iowa 4-H Reporters, Project Area Awards, National 4-H Congress, National 4-H Conference, SESS Ambassador and State 4-H Council are open now! ( recognition-opportunities) Iowa 4-H Foundation Scholarships The Iowa 4-H Foundation scholarship applications for the 4-H scholarship program are available now through February 1, H members are strongly encouraged to read and follow the helpful hints and instructions that are on the 4-H Foundation Scholarship webpage.
