6 Synopsis: The convict Jean Valjean is released from a French prison after serving 19 years for stealing a loaf of bread and attempts to escape. When he arrives in town, no one is willing to offer Valjean shelter or work because he is an ex-convict. The Bishop of Digne offers Valjean shelter and food and to repay him, Valjean steal his silverware. When the police arrest Valjean, the Bishop covers for him, claiming the silver was a gift. The Bishop makes Valjean promise to use the silver to become an honest man. This moment establishes the premise of the show by literally buying Jean Valjean s soul for God. Valjean masks his identity and enters a new town where he invents a manufacturing process that brings the town prosperity and he eventually becomes mayor. Fantine works in the factory Valjean runs. She is trying to earn enough to pay the Thenardier s a monthly allowance for keeping Cosette. When Fantine s coworkers find out about her illegitimate child, she is fired. The Thenardiers demand more money for Cosette and in order to make ends meet, Fantine resorts to prostitution. One night, Javert arrests Fantine, but Valjean intercedes and has Fantine taken to a hospital, where she later dies with Valjean at her side. He vows to take care of Cosette. Valjean goes to the Thenardiers, sees how they are abusing her, and buys Cosette from them. Valjean and Cosette go into hiding and live a secluded life hiding from Valjean s past, but Cosette does not know why. Marius is a young law student and while in school, he associates with a group of radical students the Friends of the ABC who are led by Enjolras and want to fight for freedom and democracy. Marius meets Cosette by chance one day on the streets of Paris and it is love at first sight, but protective Valjean prevents them from speaking with each other. Thenardier recognizes Valjean on the streets and tries to purposely point Javert towards him. Valjean narrowly escpaes, When Cosette disappears, Eponine helps Marius find her whereabouts. When Marius and Cosette finally meet again, they declare their love for each other, but Marius struggles with the decision to stay with Cosette or join his friends in the rebellion. Meanwhile, Thenardier returns to Valjean s house (Rue Plumet) to try to rob him. When Valjean finds out, he realizes his past has found him and prepares for him and cosette to leave. Eponine delivers a note from Marius to Valjean that was meant for Cosette. The letter declares his love and explains he is joining the fight. Valjean makes it his mission to protect Marius for Cosette. The uprising seems doomed, but Marius, Enjolras, and their fellow students stand their ground and vow to fight for freedom and democracy. The students discover Javert among their ranks and realize he is a spy. As the first attack launches, Eponine is shot as she returns to the barricade and is the first to fall. When Valjean gets to the barricade, he volunteers to execute Javert. However, he secretly lets Javert go free. The fighting continues and as the army storms the barricade, Valjean grabs the wounded Marius and flees for the sewers, where he encounters Thenardier. When Valjean emereges, Javert is there waiting for him. Valjean pleads with him to let him get Marius to a doctor. Javert feels tormented torn between his duty to his profession and the debt he owes Valjean for saving his life. Ultimately, Javert lets Valjean go and subsequently throws himself off a bridge and into the river where he drowns. Marius makes a full recovery and receives Valjean s consent to marry Cosette. However, Valjean confesses his criminal past to Marius who is alarmed by this and does not want Valjean to be in contact with Cosette anymore. Lonely and depressed, Valjean awaits his death. In the midst of their wedding, Marius & Cosette learn from the Thenardiers that it was Valjean who saved Marius from the barricade. Ashamed that he mistrusted Valjean, Marius and Cosette rush to Valjean s side just in time for a final reconciliation. Happy to be reunited with his adopted daughter, Valjean dies in peace.

7 Character Descriptions: Jean Valjean Jean Valjean is the hero of the show and it is his life journey that the audience follows. He begins the show as a prisoner and spends the remainder of the show outrunning his past and evading Javert and the police by living in disguise. He takes in Cosette as his adopted daughter and spends his life helping people who are in difficult situations, such as Fantine, even when it means risking his own life and welfare. His whole life is a quest for redemption and he ultimately finds bliss on his deathbed. Javert Javert is a police inspector who strictly believes in law and order and will stop at nothing to enforce those. He does not think men can change for the good and believes Once a thief, forever a thief Therefore, he strongly desires to recapture Valjean because as he sees it, the life Valjean is living is an insult to justice. He is stern, forbidding, and lacking in compassion. It may seem Javert is the villain of the story, but closer examination reveals that he is not an evil man. He is aware that in society some people achieve control through evil and others through the power of the law. Ultimately, Javert is unable to say with certainty that Valjean deserves to be punished and this undermines the system of believe that Javert bases his beliefs on. In the end, Javert is forced to choose between hypocrisy and honor. Fantine Fantine is a young, working-class girl who is struggling to make a life in Paris and fend for herself and her daughter, Cosette after she is abandoned by her lover. She works to pay the Thenardiers for keeping her daughter, Cosette. She is rejected by society and forced through circumstances to become a prostitute, She is a brave woman defeated by life, sustained by her love for her daughter and clinging to her dignity. Sick with consumption, the audience witnesses her descent through poverty, hunger, cold, loneliness, and destitution to death. She represents the destruction that 19th century French society cruelly wreaks on the less fortunate. Cosette Cosette is Fantine s daughter and she spends her childhood as a servant for the Thenardiers. This awful experience, however, does not make her cynical. She ultimately ends up leaving the Thenardiers and living with Valjean as his adopted daughter after Fantine dies. She lives a secluded, but comfortable life with Valjean, and she blossoms into a beautiful, educated woman. She is innocent, strong-willed, and loving and finds fulfillment in her love for Marius. Thenardier Thenardier is the true villain of Les Miserables as a thief, liar, and a cheat. He is the embodiment of evil and has a wicked sense of humor. He delights in cheating, robbing, fraud and blackmail. He is tough, greedy, brutal, stupid and crafty and yet irresistible. He hates society and blames it and everyone else for all his misfortunes and will even steal from the dead with no remorse. He is married to Madame Thenardier, runs the Inn, and is father to Eponine and Gavroche, though he abandons Gavroche to the streets of Paris.

8 Character Descriptions: Madame Thenardier Madame Thenardier is the wife of Thenardier and also has a wicked sense of humor. She and Thenardier were made for each other and though she complains about him, she loves him dearly. She is vulgar, greedy, evil, and unhappy in her existence. She is cruel and abusive to Little Cosette and relishes every moment of it. Eponine Eponine is the daughter of the Thenardiers. She is streetwise and tough, but also sensitive and lonely. She survives by helping her father break the law. She is the tragic character in the story hopelessly in love with Marius, knowing that he will never love her in return. She bravely follows Marius to the barricades in the hope they will die together. She is proof that no one is beyond redemption. Gavroche Gavroche is the son of the Thenardiers, but his parents abandon him to the streets of Paris leaving him to fend for himself and live by his wits in the streets. His arch enemy is Javert. Gavroche is brave, witty, and cocky, like a young Artful Dodger. He is fierce and his bravery shows at the barricade when he plays a decisive role, even without a gun. Enjolras Enjolras is the student leader and radical revolutionary. He is handsome, brave, and daring. He combines his revolutionary ideals with strong, charismatic leadership. He is a thinker and a man of action. He is the one who leads the students to fight and ultimately die. Marius Marius is the handsome, romantic hero of the story. He is impulsive, passionate, willful, and headstrong. He is sweet and tender but also capable of great courage and compassion. Marius matures after his experiences on the barricade. Music expresses that which cannot be said an on which it is impossible to be silent. William Shakespeare by Victor Hugo

Aside from the musicals, Hannah also participates in the Fall play, cross country, and indoor and outdoor track. Enjoy the show! Matty Thornton (Javert) Matty is playing the role of Javert in this year s musical of Les Misreables. He is extremely excited about this musical because it is his first time as a lead, and a really important one at that! Guess you could say his Stars are aligning. All of the cast and crew has put so much time and effort in to putting on this show for you, so he hopes you enjoy it! Chaz Torisky (Ensemble) Charles, age 16, is a Junior encourages anyone would like to be in the musical to try out next year. This is his second year taking part in the musical. TJ Vercek (Joly) This is T.J. s last musical on the CV stage, and what a paternal ride it has been. From playing Jacob, the father of Joseph in, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat to Maurice, the father of Belle in, Beauty and the Beast and finally now in Les Miserables as a Father of the Church, (the Bishop). T.J. has always embraced his inner dad by making terrible jokes and puns on and off stage. T.J. has also taken part in several other CV productions, playing Boris Kholenkov in You Can t Take It With You, the Mad Hatter in, Alice VS Wonderland, Sheridan Whiteside in, The Man Who Came To Dinner, Alex Dennison in Rehearsal For Murder, as well as a minor role in, 9 to 5. When not on stage, T.J. takes part in the CV Showband and holds the position of Band President as well as being Treasurer of the CV Thespian Society. After graduating, T.J. plans to attend West Virginia University for Mechanical Engineering in the fall. His other hobbies include playing guitar, driving his truck (Jeff), and walking his pet goat, Mayberry. Taylor Walsh (Ensemble) Taylor is in 3rd grade and thrilled and excited to be performing in her 3rd musical! She was in the children s choir for Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat and part of the ensemble for last year s Beauty and the Beast. She is also active in gymnastics, chorus, soccer, basketball, and softball. Taylor enjoys performing and her true love is dance. She started dancing at age 2 ½ and competes and performs as a 3rd year member of Show Biz Kids at Janet Hays and Co. dance studio. She has performed at USC Community Center, Idelwild Park, and Kennywood Park. Whether inside a house, outside playing, or even out in public, whether a ballfield or at a store, you can find Taylor singing, tumbling, and dancing as she goes along her way.

15 Cast Bios: Morgan Ward (Ensemble) Les Mis is Morgan s fourth and final high school musical. Her time on stage has been incomparably the best part of her time spent at CV. She will never forget the happy faces and memories that were made with her musical family. When she isn t in rehearsal, she can be found looking up the latest meme or filming the local neighborhood cats. She will be attending La Roche College in the fall to major in film and video production. Lena Werner (Ensemble) Les Miserables is Lena s second high school musical, and fourth overall production at Chartiers Valley. As a freshman, she participated in Beauty and the Beast, which was always a joy to take part in. As a freshman, she was also in The Man Who Came to Dinner, which was full of laughs and good memories. In the fall of 2015 she enjoyed being in Rehearsal For Murder because it was always full of excitement and thrill. Les Miserables definitely proposed a challenge, but it was still an honor to be part of. She loved every minute of rehearsals and show nights and and looks forward to the next two years of theater at Chartiers Valley.
