1 Spartan HOLIDAY EDITION Sentinel STUDENT EDITOR: SOPHIA BELLA CUCCI Fiddler On The Roof Riddles: What can Santa give away and still keep? -A cold. Where do Santa's reindeer like to stop for lunch? -Deery Queen for a Blizzard! What did the big furry hat say to the warm wooly scarf? You hang around while I go on ahead! What do you call fifty penguins in the Arctic? Lost! Very lost! Inside this issue: By Sophia Bella Cucci Fiddler on the Roof is a great play from the 1970 s that has been chosen for the eighth grade play! This story is about a poor Jewish milkman, named Tevye, who has a wife, Golde and five daughters, Tzeitel, Hodel, Chava, Shprintze, and Bielke. When the matchmaker, Yente, comes to town with a match for Tzeitel, Tzeitel gets upset since she is in love with a poor tailor named Motel. Later in the story, a poor teacher name Perchik meets Teyve and is invited to Sabbath. When Perchik and Hodel meet they have an instant connection. When he proposes to Hodel, he reveals the bad news that he is going to Siberia. Hodel wants to go with him, but her father gets upset with them. She does end up going to Siberia with Perchik. Chava falls in love with Fyedka, a Christian man. Tevye does not approve. When Chava tells Tevye her and Fyedka want to be married he is enraged and does not give them his permission. Golde finds out that they have been married anyway, and tells Tevye. He declares that Chava not a part of their family anymore because Fyedka is not of the right religion. Tevye has been plagued by his daughter s choice of husband. An order from Russia comes saying that all Jews must leave their homes. My favorite songs include: Tradition, Matchmaker, If I Were A Rich Man, Do You Love Me, Far From The Home I Love, and Sunrise, Sunset. Mr. Walker, Ms. Niland, and Ms. Peene will be directing the musical. It was last performed in HP in The 8th graders are ready to put on a great show and even take on the challenge of the bottle dance! Poetry Movie Reviews Dear Spartacus Sports Fashion Recipes Holiday Fun Top 10 Dear Spartacus, I m bored! I do the same thing during recess everyday! What can I do or join to make my week more fun? 2 SPARTAN SENTINEL Holiday Poetry By Sumin Kim The soft white All different patterns Never one alike That melts on your tongue It might make you yell YES! when there s a storm As it strikes down hard Hour after hour If it gets you in the mood For having sweet hot chocolate Or maybe being sleepy And watching TV Have you guessed it yet? The gently falling object That comes during winter And sometimes autumn? SNOW! The Smurfs on DVD By Michael Pankauski The movie called The Smurfs is going to be on DVD and Blu-Ray soon. It is a great movie that grades K-4 will love. Small blue creatures live in a forest and hide from a wizard, Gargamel. When Gargamel finds their base, he attacks it and the Smurfs are forced to run. One of the Smurfs goes the wrong way and some other Smurfs follow him, trying to save him. They find him in a cave staring at a portal. Gargamel is right behind them so they are forced to jump into the portal, and they land in New York. Gargamel follows the Smurfs who can return to Smurfland only when a blue moon is in the sky. Buy or rent the movie to see the exciting ending. Winter Break By Rosa Kim, Irene Kang & Lauren Szeto Ideas to cure boredom: 1.Spend time with family & friends. 2. Bake cookies. 3. Go to a museum. 4. Tubing/skiing/skating/sledding. 5. Read a great book. 6. Build a snowman. 7. Drink hot chocolate. Hockey By Maxx King & Quinn Scherer The hockey season has started! The Rangers were off to a shaky start, but have warmed up and are now on a winning streak. The Rangers lost one of their best defenders, Marc Staal, because of a concussion. Staal has been replaced by Anton Stralman who is excited to play with the team. The Rangers' record is They are currently in second place. The goalie is on fire; Henrik Lundqvist has 550 saves! The Devils are not having as much luck as the Rangers. They are in twenty-fifth place out of thirty teams with a record. Patrik Elias is the leader of the team with nine goals. The goalie, Martin Brodeur, has 306 saves so far this season. It seems like Brodeur is still adjusting and needs to improve his game. We will keep you updated on our local
3 HOLIDAY EDITION Movie Reviews Happy Feet 2 By Ally Carlos, Camdyn Fuschillo & Rosie Dippolito Happy Feet 2 is about a little penguin named Eric who loves to dance but can t find his place in the world. He is considered weird by the other peguins. When the entire population of penguins is trapped by a block of ice, they all go on an adventure. Jack and Jill By Ally Carlos, Camdyn Fuschillo & Rosie Dippolito Jack and Jill is rated PG and is very entertaining. It is about a man named Jack whose sister Jill comes for a visit during the holidays. Both parts are played by Adam Sandler. It is a great movie and you will laugh all the way through. Winter Fashion Tips Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 By Brian Walker Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 is an excellent movie to see. Being a Harry Potter fan makes it a must-see. It s out on DVD but buy it on Blu-Ray if you can. It has special extras like an interview between J.K. Rowling and Daniel Radcliffe. The best part to me is the final battle between Harry and Voldemort. This is the last movie in the series so you definitely do not want to miss it. Plan a Harry Potter movie marathon over Winter Break and watch all 8! Fun Winter Crafts By Doris Vazacopolus & Eleni Zlatis Wondering what s in style this winter? Here are some ideas: 1. Plaid skirts and button down shirts. Give your plaid shirt a cool look by rolling up the sleeves and accessorizing with a belt and some cute hoop earrings. 2. Skinny jeans. Skinny jeans are totally in style. Add a flowy shirt and ankle high boots to create a cool outfit. 3. Ballerina flats. Wear these flats with a cute skirt and a cardigan top. Don t forget the jewelry! 4. Colorful sneakers. Colorful sneakers look great with any pair of jeans in your closet. 5. Ugg Boots. Uggs complete any casual outfit and they are super comfy. By Lauren Szeto, Irene Kang & Rosa Kim 1.Make a snowman by stacking marshmallows and securing them with a toothpick. 2. You can use pompoms to make snowmen as well. 3. Glue popsicle sticks together to make a sled. Decorate them with markers and attach string to the front. 4. Fold paper, cut it randomly and get a beautiful snowflake. Online Update: Friv.com By Chris Schettino& Josh Lee Friv.com is the best website you will ever experience. First, you can play a game where you get a pet donkey and take care of it. Another game you can play is Watergirl and Fireboy. This game involves teamwork. Last, Papa s Pizzeria is a really fun game because you have to make a pizza and cook it in the oven for the right amount of time or you will get a bad review. Then you have to cut the pizza in the correct number of slices. These are just three of the many games that make Friv.com fun. Try this website!
4 Community News: HP 5K Five Gift Ideas More Riddles By Casey Rochford and Cara Schettino Congratulations to all the HP 5K winners! Over 500 people registered for the race, and 483 finished. Many HP winners were from various age groups. Before the race, there was a Kiddie Dash for children ages 8 and under. The 5K started and ended at the Harrington Park Public Library. A lot of Harrington Park staff, parents, and residents participated and volunteered in the race. The money raised from the 5K is going to good causes like the Boys and Girls Club in Lodi, NJ because Lodi experienced a lot of flood damage this fall. Also, some of the money raised By Danielle Mimeles 1. ipad 2 2. Snuggie 3. Snow Tube 2nd Grade Annual Thanksgiving Feast 4. Why do birds fly south for the winter? -Because it s too far too walk! What do elves By Lizzie Venezia and Emily Mendello On Tuesday, November 22, 2011, the Second Grade hosted their annual Thanksgiving feast. They performed an array of songs for family and friends such as, I'm Thankful and Alberkurkey Turkey. Each class also recited a different poem. We asked Ms. Giavanozzo how the students prepared for this feast. Her reply was: "They practiced for weeks to memorize the songs. Also, all the kids agreed on and came up with the hand motions". Then, we asked Ms. Gee how they chose the songs for the performance. She informed us that "they thought about the main message and browsed through songs that gave the Thanksgiving message to the visitors that came". We interviewed Allie Callahan, Madison Murphy, and Kady Park. They all said their favorite Thanksgiving dish was turkey. Allie and Madison both declared that their favorite song was Alberkurkey Turkey, while Kady said Top Ten Songs By Maansi Srivastava Do you love listening to music? Well, I have been going around school recently asking students for their favorite songs. Here are the results: 10. Give Me Everything by Pitbull 5. On the Floor by Jennifer Lopez and Pitbull 4. Rudolph the Red-Nosed
5 Easy Holiday Recipes By: Megan King and Hayley Wilcox One great recipe made easy is Holly Cookies. These will only take a few minutes of your time. Ingredients: 4 cups cornflakes 1/2 cup butter 10 ounces marshmallows 1/4 tablespoon vanilla extract Colored food dye 1. Melt butter in a big pot. 2. Then, dump in the whole bag of marshmallows and stir until it forms a sticky liquid. 3. Put in the vanilla and food dye and stir. 4. Last, add the cornflakes and stir with all your might. 5. Scoop out the treats and place on tin foil in little balls. 6. If you want, add cinnamon red-hots to the center to make the cookies look like holly berries. 7. Let the cookies harden and enjoy! Another great holiday recipe is Chocolate Chip Bars. These are fun and easy to make, and they are great for the season. Ingredients: 1 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 cup sugar 1/2 a teaspoon of baking soda 1/2 cup brown sugar 1/2 a teaspoon of salt 1 egg Where in HP? 6 Opinion: Should Kids Have The Option to Go Outside During Winter? By Faith Blackington Absolutely! In some cases, such as my own, kids need a nice break to run around and get their energy out before their next class. If it is a snowy day, kids should have the option to play outside in the snow if they have the following criteria: snow pants, a winter jacket, mittens/ gloves, a hat, and proper shoes. Is 32 degrees really that cold if you are dressed properly? No it s not. Those kids who thoroughly enjoy indoor recess and don t like the snow should have the chance to sit and relax in the nice, warm gym. The basketball hoops could be put down and the fun-filled activity cart that Mr. Herbert generously allows the students to use during lunch could be available. What do you think? Let us know your opinion by sending us an at: spartansentinel@ gmail.com It is true that mothers and fathers do not want to send their children with a snow outfit to wear every time it snows. This is the simple solution: send the snow suit in a trash bag. Their homeroom teacher could have a bin in the classroom to put the suits in every time it snows. When it is time to come in, the kids who play outside would come in 5 minutes early and report to their homeroom teachers to de-snowsuit themselves. I think all kids should have the opportunity to enjoy themselves in the snow at recess, enjoy the crisp cold air, and have fun! We could even build snowmen that look like our teachers! Just think of the possibilities. Book Reviews By Taylor Mendello and Emily Walker Did you know Laura Numeroff s 1985 If You Give A Mouse A Cookie was rejected by a publisher before someone realized that she and illustrator Felicia Bond had a winning picture book concept? Since then, the pair has created an entire line of children s books, of which this is the 13th. Like the sweet toothed feline of If You Give A Cat A Cupcake fame, the adorable pup in If You Give A Dog A Donut romps on adventures after his snack. This book is bound to be a frequent bedtime reading request. By Jenny Choi Another book review for this month is Wolf Brother! It is a story that takes place way back before we had houses. Yes, they lived in huts! Torak, the main character, was raised with the Wolf Clan, but for some reason, even though his father was part of the Wolf Clan, his family never lived with the clan. They lived by themselves. One day, a strange bear, seeming almost possessed, kills Torak s father. Torak runs away and encounters a young wolf cub who soon becomes Torak s closest friend. Torak soon gets caught in another clan, the Raven Clan. From there, the story proceeds into a climax of drama, suspense and action.
