OFIS News Luau Was A Great Time for 5th Graders! By: Rebecca On May 20th, the PTA had a celebration for the 5th graders. In the gym and the cafeteria there was a Hawaiian luau! The PTA provided snacks, drinks, and tattoos in the cafeteria. There was also a dance party in the gym! Mr. Ricci entertained 5th graders with fun games like a hula hoop contest and a limbo contest. He also provided great music and many 5th graders enjoyed dancing with their friends! Thank You PTA for this wonderful party! Author Rick Sowash Visits By: O.F.I.S Emily Rick Sowash came to OFIS! Last year, Rick Sowash came and talked about his book Heroes of Ohio. This year, he talked about his book, Critters Flitters and Spitters. Rick Sowash is hilarious. When the show was on he talked about animals of Ohio. He told a story about an animal and some 4th graders came on the stage dressed up as the animal he talked about! For example some 4th graders dressed up as geese as Rick Sowash gave students some fun facts about them. It was a very cool show! 2 Math Club Chess Club By: Nikki By: Abby Ever wonder what it s like to be in math club? Well you don t need to wonder anymore because I m going to tell you a little bit about it. Math Club is an after school program that is for kids that maybe want a challenge and are ready to learn some harder math. One topic of math they focus on is Hands on Equations. It s algebra! These equations got more challenging each week we met. At the beginning and end of math club, we took a test that showed what we knew in math. The test we took at the end was called a contest test. When we took that test the person with the highest score was declared the winner of the contest test. Math Club is lead by Miss Weir, Mr. Schafer, and Mrs. Morris. Math Club is Chess is a game that takes practice and skill. This year Chess Club started at O.F.I.S. Students have come to learn how to play Chess or to practice their skills. Hopefully Chess Club will continue at O.F.I.S.! Greenfield Village/Henry Ford Museum By: Nicole Have you ever wanted to go into a different state with your friends from school? When you re in fifth grade you can! You get to go to Michigan on a tour bus with TV s and your own air-conditioning. This 5th grade field trip is on June 4th. It takes about 2 and a half hours to get there. When you get there you go to The Henry Ford Museum for half the day and then you go to Greenfield Village for the other half. Greenfield Village is a place where all the stuff is set up to look like you re in a historical village. There are actors that pretend they are living in that time period too. The Henry Ford Museum is a museum all about U.S history. I think the fifth graders will have a great time! PAGE 2
The Percy Jackson Series By: Dylan A lot of people in the Intermediate School are reading the Percy Jackson Series. Natalie in Mrs. Judson s classroom read every single Percy Jackson book in the series in less then a month! Natalie is reading the entire series all over again! A lot of people are reading the series also. I think that Percy Jackson and the Olympians is a great series for people who like myths, long books, greek gods, and lots of action. If you like all of those things then you should try reading the Percy Jackson series. I guarantee that you will like this series. Student Council Food Drive a Big Success By: Becca Student council spent the months of April and May preparing for the OFIS Annual Food Drive! OFIS Student Council donated the food to local families in need. Students were told not to bring any food that would spoil. Some of the Student Council class representatives helped Mrs. Rodgers deliver the food to a church. OFIS students that brought in one item to support the Food Drive were able to participate in the Hawaiian dress day. Also, the class that had the most amount of food donated got a popcorn party and a 30 minute recess! Congratulations to Mrs. Caso s class for winning the contest by donating 265 points worth of food! Emily the Strange: the Lost Days By: Gwen I read the book, Emily the Strange: the Lost Days by Rob Reger. I thought the book was fabulous. The author does a great job of making you believe that the character is real. His writing style is hilarious. Writing her journal entries and trying to figure out what s behind the amnesia, Emily s personality shows. My favorite character was Emily because of her stubbornness, curiosity and her four black cats. I d read this book again and again. P.S. don t miss the second book Emily the Strange: Stranger and Stranger. PAGE 3
Meet Mrs. Annable! By: Natalie I interviewed Mrs. Annable, our media specialist and computer lab teacher. She is retiring this year. When I interviewed her she said she likes reading more than writing. Mrs. Annable misses teaching in Falls-Lenox but she likes working with the kids of OFIS and the Middle School. A book series Mrs. Annable would definitely recommend is Peter and the Star Catchers, there are three books in this series. Mrs. Annable does not just like to read! When Mrs. Annable has free time, she likes to be with her family, read, play games, watch movies, and go for walks. Good luck Mrs. Annable, we will miss you! Swings-N-Things By. Nikki Egel There was a field trip for the fourth and fifth grade to Swings- N- Things. Swings- N- Things had much to offer like a concession stand and an arcade. They also had go-carts, bumper boats, and laser tag! Thanks Swings-N-Things! PAGE 4 All Shook Up By: Shelley Pearsall By: Madison I read the book All Shook Up by Shelley Pearsall and I thought it was humorous, silly, and wonderfully written. In this book are a boy, his embarrassing father, an odd woman, and her high-strung daughter. The boy, Josh, feels like the shared kid because his parents are divorced. When his grandma breaks her hip, Josh has to live with his father for a few months. When he gets off the plane his dad isn t there. But when he gets there Josh sure doesn t recognize him. He has black hair, side- burns, and a Hawaiian shirt on! To read on look for the book All Shook Up in the library. I hope you love it as much as I did!
The Green Team By: Emily and Becca After the Ohio Achievement Assessment week, Mr. Schafer s and Mrs. Atkin s classes sold Green Team T-shirts for $5. Students bought them during their lunch periods. Students also got a bracelet and a card saying they are members of the Green Team. Students could also buy extra bracelets for $0.75. Students chose from baseball, basketball, checkered and many more decorative bracelets made out of recycled materials! Mrs. Double s husband made the T-shirts for the Green Team! The Chronicles of Vladimir Tod Eighth Grade Bites By: Nikki I read the book The Chronicles of Vladimir Tod Eighth Grade Bites by Heather Brewer. It had much suspense throughout the book. It was also very well written. The book is about one eighth grade boy who is half vampire! His mom and dad are dead? Sure being a vampire is cool, but this boy s world is turned upside-down when he thinks his mysterious long-term sub is a vampire! If you enjoy books about vampires and mysteries try taking a bite into this book. PAGE 5
Summer is Summer is a breeze over crisp green grass, It is birds singing in the morning, And waves crashing against the shore. Summer is the sun shining our backs It is the end of work and start of play. Summer is birds, and bugs, and tents pitched high, Around a campfire, roaring high in the sky. Summer is family spending time, together. I stay here in the sky, Keep my wet face to myself. No one sees me as I hide in the clouds. Blow, Blow, Blow... I try to grip on a bird, a cloud, anything. I begin to fall. CRASH! No, no, no oh, no... My wings are slimming, Thunder roars around me. There is no where to go. No where to hide. A stripe of clear lightning flashes my way. Hello? Please help me! PAGE 6 -Gwen Gossett The Rainy Day By: Jill Alone, I look up at the gray sky, and the dream that somehow became a nightmare. A ray of beautiful light flows through a little crack in the sky. I blow out a little breath of air. Finally, storm s over. I pull myself out of a tree; an oak tree, that somehow saved my life. Plop. I m on the ground. My wings regain strength. The sky is clear. A rainbow is out. And my wings are the color of pure white snow. I flash through the rainbow, I sing with the birds. Tweet...Tweet...Beeep... Beep! Beep! Beep! What? What? Where am I? I m on the floor, my alarm clock blaring in my ear. I grab my bookbag. I alway do have the strangest dreams before the first day of school!
