1 December 2014 Volume 20, No. 1 US Farquharson Target Rifle Team News Ray Gross, Captain At this year s National Championships at Ben Avery Range in Phoenix Arizona, USA F T/R Team mates James Crofts and Derek Rodgers entertained all with a three day battle that will be remembered for many years to come. James Crofts came out on top, taking the title of US National Champion by just 1 point, x to Derek Rodgers x. Great shooters, both at the top of the sport, were neck and neck through the final shot. Bill Litz, finished third overall with a score of x, Brad Suave finished fourth at and Keith Ague finished fifth with a x. Derek Rodgers also set a new 1000 Yard National Record with a score of x during the Nationals. The team event was also a hotly contested affair. Team Sinclair, consisting of Brad Sauve, Derek Rodgers, Paul Phillips and Dan Pohlabel, coached by Ray Gross with Jeff Rorer as Captain, won the team National Championships with a score of x. This is Team Sinclair s Sixth National Championship and during the match they also set a new 1000 yard team national record of x. Team X-men finished a close second, with a score of x and Michigan FTR finished third. All of the members of the top three teams are trying out for the US Team, plus many other shooters as well. Next year we will begin the tryout process with dates planned at Ben Avery Range in February and in Michigan a few months later. We are tentatively planning to hold a practice with the Canadian Team in July 2015 at Connaught range near Ottawa Canada. The US FTR team is 100% supported by sponsorships and those funds are used to help cover the costs of travel and lodging for the team. We welcome your support. Support the Sport! 2014 was a very busy year. The US Rifle Team comprised of the Under 21/25, Veterans and US Palma Team eligible shooters and coaches competed and trained in twelve significant events forming over 34 teams to do so. Camp Perry saw fourteen US national teams formed which included three Under 21/25, five Veterans Teams and six US Rifle Teams. The United States sent a team to Canada immediately after Camp Perry to compete in the Canadian Fullbore Championships and the America Match. In the Fall of 2014 the US Rifle Team met the challenge from the Scottish Rifle Team to compete in four team events in California. Camp Perry 2014 was an important event for the US Rifle Team in that the selection of the Under 21/25 Teams, the Veterans Team and the US Palma Team was kicked off. The team was divided into four and eight shooter teams with one and two/three coaches respectively. The international competition was very challenging in that Great Britain had sent six teams comprised of one Under 25, one Veterans and two four shooter and two eight shooter teams. Canada sent an eight shooter team and Australia sent a Veterans and a four shooter senior team to compete. 2 (cont.) (cont.) The US did very well in all age groups winning some and losing some of the matches. Most notably the US won the eight shooter three coach Palma Team Match which is one half the Palma Team squad against a very strong GB team. However the US lost the four shooter Palma Team match to Australia but ahead of GB. Strikingly all the team matches were extremely close with no team running away with a high victory score. Canada requested to hold the America Match and the NRA agreed consequently the US Rifle Team selected fourteen shooters and four coaches to represent the US in Canada. There are two significant team matches leading up to the America Match shot on the last day of the DCRA Fullbore Championships. The results are astonishing. All three teams were within just a few points of each other. This is a first by all accounts. Canada Team Match: GB V, USA V and Canada V. The Commonwealth Team Match: GB V, USA V and Canada V. The America Match: USA V, Canada V and GB V The scores are listed to illustrate how close each team match was. The America Match score is a new international record. Norman Anderson was the US Captain, Emil Praslick Head Coach, Steve Hardin and Ray Gross Line Coaches. This management team did an excellent job. The US F-Class Team comprised of four F-Open and four F-TR shooters won the F-Class America Team Match. Mr Rick Jenson, Captain US F-Open team, was the captain. The US Rifle Team is comprised of three international teams. The Under 21/25, the Veterans and the US Palma Team. In each four year cycle we select the shooters and coaches for these teams from the members of the larger US Rifle Team. In the other three years of the four year cycle we train and compete as one team. This allows the teams to all learn the best team practices and use the same methods in team matches and individual training. The success of this approach is in the winning. Without a doubt the US has won more Gold, Silver and Bronze team medals in the last seven years than the previous twenty years before that combined. We are all looking forward to the upcoming 2015 World Long Range Championships and Palma Team Match. The World Championships have not been competed in the United Sates since 1992 and not at Camp Perry since This World Championships will be fully attended by all the competing Fullbore Nations. 3 U25 TEAM REPORT FULLBORE AND WORLD LR CHAMPIONSHIPS 2015 Hello Everyone! With the 2014 season coming to an end, the 2015 World Championships are coming closer day by day. We have had a very successful 2014 year as a team, and we hope to defend our 2011 World U25 Team Championship title; which has been the focus for the past 3 years. Over these past 3 years there has been a large variety of talent presented to us. I know we will also be facing other quality talent against our international counterparts but with the amount of skill and determination that these US Under 25 team members bring, I am confident we can accomplish this goal. We are very excited to host the 2015 World Championships here in the states this upcoming year at the prestigious Camp Perry facility. I would like to say a special thanks to everyone who has supported us by purchasing palma rifle and cash raffle tickets. I would also like to extend my congratulations to all the winners! The highlights include our trip to Ottawa in August for the Canadian Nationals and the US Nationals that were held in Phoenix, Arizona. A huge thank you to the DCRA and the Desert Sharpshooters for hosting a couple of great matches. We were very fortunate to have team members winning both events during the individuals including the top seven spots at Phoenix. We also successfully defended the F-Class portion of the America Match against Canada and had the top four teams at Phoenix. We are looking forward to 2015 where we will be traveling back to Ireland to defend the Creedmoor Cup and many other smaller trips. All the Best, Rick Jensen Captain US F-Class Open Rifle Team National Champion Jim Crofts From the Director, NRA Competitive Shooting Division, Dennis Willing In August, 2015, the NRA will be hosting the Fullbore Rifle Championships followed by the World Long Range Target Rifle Championships. The combined events are part of the World Championships. Once the International teams have been allocated their firing points, remaining spaces on the firing line can be filled by individuals who are not part of the International teams. For U.S. competitors, Masters and High Masters are eligible, with preference given to High Masters, and further preference given to those firing in both events. 4 Young Eagle Junior Achievement Awards EMIL PRASLIK JR Three Young Eagle Junior Achievement Awards were presented for their performance at Camp Perry this past August. National High Power Long Range Championships Emil Praslick Jr., age 77, of Brewster, New York, died on July 31, He was born on July 20, 1937, and raised in Yonkers by Emil Sr. and Mary (Tkácz) Praslick. He was educated in Yonkers, New York, and graduated from Gorton High School. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1955 to 1962 as an Aviation Ordnanceman aboard the carriers USS Tarawa and the USS Independence, operating with the Atlantic Fleet. Each club can determine on their own how to price and run their match. We recommend a $25 to $50 premium be placed on top of the normal entry fee but this is up to each club. 5 Palma Junior Achievement Award Ian Cheeseman Memorial Trophy The Palma Junior Achievement Award program is intended to recognize those Juniors who truly deserve recognition in Long Range Rifle shooting. Juniors need to fire only one of the required scores to win the award. One award per Junior per year will be given. To be recognized, match sponsors, coaches, or parents should forward a copy of the Official Match Bulletin of any NRA Approved or Registered tournament in which a qualifying score was shot along with the name and address of the intended recipient; type rifle/caliber. The shooter will receive an engraved walnut plaque, shooting cap, pin, and certificate. Mail to: The Ian Cheeseman Memorial Trophy was approved by the NRA High Power Rifle Committee for implementation in the 2015 NRA Long Range Rifle Championships as part of the Grand Aggregate Award, Match 500, for the High Junior.
