Word from the Getting Ready for Another Season First of all let me apologize for the newsletters coming to you so close together. Our last issue was held up at our printer because he moved his company and was unable to do our newsletter as promptly as usual. Some of the news became outdated because it sat at the printer so long personal items about our members included in the last issue were long overdue for your notification. The newsletter staff apologizes for not keeping you updated. We hope you will understand that once the newsletter goes over to our printer, it is out of our hands. Our annual meetings for the adult and junior team reps will be listed later in this issue. We had to remove (by vote of your Board of Directors) one adult rep for failing to attend the minimum amount of required meetings; a second member may be removed as well. At the adult meetings there is little or no interest in representing your division at the Board level. Some people are embarrassed into accepting the position at the meeting but do not attend the meetings and are not useful to the adults. On the other hand, the junior reps rarely miss meetings and give us their input. At the September adult meeting the Region will again be requesting members to serve on the BOD. It is an easy commitment maybe three to four meetings per year and one of them a very nice dinner gathering. Please consider stepping up to run for the BOD as an adult rep but also keep in mind you are expected to attend meetings. We have no proxy votes with our new by-laws so you are not doing your division any good if you do not attend meetings. Hard to believe that in a few weeks the registration packets will be available for our 05/06 season. We are pleased to announce that there is no raise in membership fees for GL Region. The Region By-Laws, Handbook and Tournament Director s manual have been updated. They will be made available at all pre/season meetings and mailed later to those unable to attend. All publications are on our web site right now for you to view. Again a big thanks to all the people who worked so hard and spent so much time revising and editing this publication. Editor in Chief: Angelo Iasillo. Assisted by Sandy Abbinanti, Mary Malpede, Donna Smith, Paula McAleese, Ann Marie Dolan, Denis Bergstedt and Lea Wagner. Lea Wagner Commissioner Great Lakes Region Uniform # Changes for 2006 In the 2005 Rule Book a Uniform # Change starting in 2006 was announced. The change was to increase the size of the numbers as well as change the required placement. This new rule brought on a lot of controversy which led to a rethinking of the change. The good news is that the number sizes WILL NOT CHANGE but the bad news is that the numbers WILL BE REQUIRED TO BE PLACED IN THE CENTER OF THE CHEST. When you start thinking about new uniforms for 2006 please make sure that you request the required 4 number on the chest and a 6 number on the back. If you were proactive last year and purchased the larger numbers listed in last year s rule book you are still OK. The 4 and 6 numbers are the minimum size required. Larger numbers are always acceptable. The good part of placing the numbers in the center of the chest will alleviate numbers being hidden by players pulling up sleeves. This has been a problem for years and will now be corrected. Notice to Parents of Jr. Athletes The end of the 2005 season has come and while we might all be preparing for the coming season we want to give all Jr. Parents a friendly reminder. MAKE SURE ALL DUES HAVE BEEN PAID TO YOUR CLUB. Each year the Region Office receives notices from many of the Jr. Clubs that players still have outstanding debts. The Jr. Club Directors have a friendly agreement amongst themselves that they will not accept any player from a different club who still has an outstanding debt. Your child s record will be tagged in our database and will not be allowed to register for the next season until all debts have been taken care. Don t wait! Make sure you are paid in full.

Executive Committee Meeting Updates The Region Comptroller, Angelo Iasillo, handed out a full financial report for the Board to review and discuss concerning the upcoming season budget matters. He reported that GL Region will undergo an annual audit in August and GL is in compliance with all non-for-profit organizations rules and regulations. A lot of discussion was held regarding the Region High Performance Program. Board members are questioning the continuance of this program with the cost so high to the Region and it seems to increase on an annual basis. The dollar amount being spent on such a small number of athletes in proportion to our registration figures seemed unreasonable to many. In addition what is the goal of the National H/P program and how do we raise the level of awareness for the region competition? Julie Wiejak, the Director of the program was not in attendance to answer many concerns. The program does not seem to be growing with less athletes trying out for the program and few clubs being represented. The program was voted to be continued for one year only and we will all be taking a very hard look at continuing the H/P program in Great Lakes Region. Background Searches for anyone connected to a junior program will continue by edict of our insurance carriers. Those individuals completing the check up will not be expected to re/apply for the 05/06 season. All searches are good for two full seasons. In order to make life easier for all who process this program, we will list on our web site the individuals who can skip the process this season. All new personnel and all of our officials will be submitted for this upcoming season. In addition those clubs who submit forms for people who never join USAV will be billed by Great Lakes Region for the charges if they become too many per team registration. Last season we had two clubs who submitted over 20 background checks for people who never became members. Great Lakes MUST PAY for every form submitted to the Security Search Consultants and therefore will pass the added expense on to the individual Club. Great Lakes Region will continue to assist our Tournament Director s when they are stuck with NSF checks by teams. The Region Board has put a cap on the total amount the Region will reimburse the TD s -so be sure and not let one team/club run up oversize debts to your event. If you have any issues you wish to be brought up by the BOD, please contact your division rep or any officer listed on our staff page. Officials Corner Our Assignment Chair has reported a shortage in USAV certified referee s. The region is going to offer more clinics to train and rate officials. All candidates must meet the following criteria: 17 year of age minimum Attend 4-6 hour clinic Pass written test Keep a score sheet Rated as R-1 twice Rated as R-2 twice Track Libero Sandy Abbinanti has offered again to come out to your club and do an on-site training. Contact her for that convenient method of training officials. If you are interested in becoming a candidate for our Fall clinics, please contact Sandy Abbinanti or Mary Malpede (listed on the staff page). We need to increase our officials cadre, but will never sacrifice talent to fill in for numbers sake alone. Congratulations to the following Great Lakes Officials who earned their moment in the Limelight this season: Malafu Tiatia was awarded the Silver Whistle at the National Referee Clinic in Denver. Randy Leaver was awarded the Silver Pen at the same clinic. These awards are given to first year national officials, either scorekeeper or referee, who show outstanding talent and skills in their field of officiating. Great Lakes is very, very proud of these talented duo. Certainly not to be overlooked Chris Rentz and Justin Basovsky earned their full National Referee rating at the Boys Championships in Louisville. This full national rating completes almost a two year process of ratings and clinics at the Region, and Junior Nationals. Both of our referee s came through with flying colors. We also have two new Junior National Referee s that completed their process at the Salt Lake City Junior Olympic event. Kudos to Devonie McLarty and Skip Cross for their hard work and passing this major milestone in their officiating career. Great Lakes Region is very aware of the training process that takes all six of these fine officials to the highest national levels. Thank you Sandy, Mary and your crew.

Adult Team Rep Meeting The Annual Adult Team Rep meeting will be held on Sunday Sept. 25 th at 11:00 AM. The meeting will be held at the Prairie Lakes Community Center 515 E.Thacker (Dempster St.) Des Plaines, IL / Paula McAleese and Angelo Iasillo will conduct the meeting. This meeting will determine the adult program for The Adult Division Rep Elections will also take place at this meeting. Anyone wishing to run for a position on the Executive Committee should contact Donna Smith prior to this scheduled meeting. Membership packets for the new season will be distributed it s very important that adults attend. If you do not attend you will have to contact Donna Smith to have a packet mailed out to your team. The Region will NOT automatically mail to the 05 teams since reps change and move and the packets are expensive to mail. All you have to do is have someone from your team give about two hours every year to have your say about programs and policies. The Region would like to acknowledge the services of Scott and Jennifer Behrendt, Scott Ross, and Erika Vlasak for all of the hard work they have put in during their terms. Their positions on the Board will be up for re-election. One other Men s position will hopefully be filled to complete a term of service due to a lack of attendance by a men s rep. Attendance the last few years has declined but we have attributed this decline to the date selection (day after the annual Luau Tournament that many of our adults participate in). This year we have selected a date that we hope will draw more of our Adults to express their views and concerns in order to make the 2006 season enjoyable for everyone. Hope to see you on the 25th! 6 Recognition of Achievement Robert L. Lindsay Meritorious Service Award Recipients Every year a USAV member Region may nominate no more than five recipients for this prestigious award The nominees must meet the following criteria: Active participation and leadership in volleyball during the current playing season as a coach, official and/or administrator. Promotion of volleyball and/or the Corporation with the nominating Member Organization. An active role in major volleyball programs or projects. The Great Lakes Region has nominated the following 3 members as recipients of this National Recognition Award: Terry Narantic: Terry is a certified Regional Referee in Great Lakes Region. Terry s forte in volleyball is her strong leadership in the IHSA volleyball program. She is president of the ZONI local board of federation officials. Terry conducts clinics and classes for aspiring IHSA officials and serves in many roles to promote and improve officials for the high school players in GL Region. Terry has been selected as the R1 for the State High School Championships and we are proud she has expanded her horizons to USAV. Bill Milborn: Bill serves as CEO for the huge Club Fusion VBC. He not only holds the responsibility of the club but serves Fusion in a coaching capacity as well. Bill was instrumental in building the beautiful Club Fusion facility out in Huntley, IL. He has devoted a good portion of his time and energy to improving volleyball for the juniors in GL Region. Julie Wiejak: Not enough can be said for Julie for taking on the enormous task of directing Great Lake Region s High Performance program after Dragan Karadzic moved out of the Region. Julie had worked as a coach in the program before but never with all the ins and outs of directing the H/P. The program never skipped a beat and has continued the excellence and service to the junior girls in this Region. Julie also serves as an Assistant Coach for the DePaul women s collegiate team in NCAA Division I. Her plate is certainly full of excellent volleyball and GL s was very fortunate to have someone of her experience and talent to take over this huge program. To all Three of our Lindsay Award Winners we can only say a very, very sincere thank you and hope you will all continue in your volleyball avocations within our Region. MORE RECOGNITIONS: Laverne Nagel (Remodel One) sent a notice to the Region office announcing her Chicago Heat Women s team earned first place at the Senior Olympic VB Championships last June. The team boasts a couple of members and past members of Great Lakes Region. These players proved You don t get older and slower! Great job! Nellie Spicer (SPVB) one of our superb junior athletes was selected to the 2005 Women s Junior National Training team and recently competed against several other countries in Ankara, Turkey. Unfortunately the USA team did not fare too well in the final standings but we are all sure Nellie had a memorable experience. Each year the Volleyball Festival recognizes a few select individuals they refer to as Renaissance Girls. Only a senior can be nominated and she must excel on and off the volleyball court. Academics, achievements, volunteer work and of course, being a volleyball player are all taken into consideration for the award. Six girls were chosen for this years Renaissance Girls and were part of the Opening Ceremonies on stage to give a speech in front of the 10,000 plus in attendance. They also were awarded a $ Scholarship check. We are proud to announce Sheena Czipri from Kane County Jrs. was awarded the honor of Renaissance Girl! Sheena attended West Aurora High School graduating with honors with a 4.25 GPA on a 4.0 scale, her list a achievements extends well past the volleyball world. She was honored by Stedman Graham as an Athlete Against Drugs, has volunteered in many extra curricular activities as well as managing the Boys Volleyball Team at West Aurora. She will be attending and playing volleyball at Bucknell University in the fall. Also, from Kane County Jrs, Jaime Spolum, a graduate from St. Charles North HS was another nominee for the Renaissance Girl. Jaime was announced at the Championship Finals held in the University of Nevada Arena and she handed out the awards to the 17's Division Champions. Jaime will be attending and playing volleyball at Augustana in the fall. Kane County Jrs. was proud to represent the Great Lakes Region with our Renaissance Girls! To all our elite members we are extremely proud that you represent Great Lakes Region.

In Loving Memory and Our Deepest Sympathy The most difficult task in preparation of this newsletter is informing everyone when our members lose a loved one. Words are so hard to find to try and comfort the members at such a terrible time in their lives. We sadly announce the death of Bob Williams. Bob endured a very long time with pain and illness and finally lost his battle. Bob was a referee in Great Lakes and ran adult and junior tournaments. He founded and directed the Ace, Point, Match Junior VBC in the northeast area of the region. He was a devoted volleyball devotee and turned into a triple threat in the game to try and serve adults and juniors alike. Bob had always enjoyed his time as a very qualified player in our men s division. He was certainly a diverse and generous member of USAV. No memorial service or wake was held which was one of Bob s wishes. We will all miss him very much and were very sad to hear of his untimely death. Terri Baranski, Director of UNO Junior VBC lost her Mother early this summer while the junior teams were competing in Salt Lake City. Teri has five sisters that are grieving over the loss of their Mother. The death was a sudden one and a terrible shock to the entire family. One of Terri s own daughters made the most eloquent comment stating, Grandma Hibner is flying with the angels now! Out of the mouth of babes What more can we say but we are extremely sorry and saddened by this news. We were notified of another death of a parent in Great Lakes. John McGuire lost his Dad after a very long and hard battle with Cancer. John is a hard working and talented referee in GL Region and a past player in the men s division. John s Dad was an avid Harley rider and the procession of this bikes from the church to his memorial party was astounding to all who viewed it. A perfect respect for a man who so lived to ride that hog bike. John s informing us all of this loss carried some valuable thoughts to all of us and I will repeat them in the memory of John s Dad, If you haven t given your parents or your kids or grandparents or aunts or uncles a big hug and kiss and told them how much you love them, think about doing it right now. A perfect memorial for the family. There are no words or thoughts now to inform you of the passing of a young Mother. Tammy Flagg, wife of John Flagg, (setter on Chicago Coast VBC) died suddenly at home leaving not only John but Jaeden (only four years of age) and their triplets Kendall, Kate and Jack (merely one year old). It is impossible to fathom the depth of this loss to such a young family. What turmoil the entire family has to be facing without a loving wife and Mother as Tammy. Not only is there a tremendous emotional loss to John but the financial burden has to be overwhelming. It is not the normal practice to publish the following information but this is so unique a burden that we felt we should do so. A Tammy Flagg Memorial Fund to benefit the children is formed. Please send any contribution to the family at: The Flagg Family (Home Address) 2263 Timothy Drive Glenview, IL To all of the Bereaved families; God Gave us Memories to Have Roses in December.

News Briefs for the Young and Old New On-Line Registration Program in the Works for 2006 USAV is trying to introduce a very advanced computer program for the Regions. The culmination of the system would allow each and every one of you to actually register on line read and give immediate tournament results register for tournaments local and out of region- and cook your dinner. Donna Smith will be attending more meetings to give the final specifics of this new system. A few regions utilized it last season and sang praises for it. If you are not computer friendly or have no access the current system will also be available. Just keep in mind do not ask your Commissioner for any computer help.wally Hendricks and Donna Smith would throw their computers in the lake if Lea started giving advice. At the present time the Region is planning on slowly implementing this new way to register for all of our Junior Clubs as well as Adult Teams. Transition to a new way of doing things often comes with new problems. We are hoping to make this transition as smooth as possible for ourselves as well as our members. More detailed info will be provided as we get closer to the 2006 season. 3rd Annual Free Coaching Clinic Final and complete information will be up on our web site and in the pre/holiday newsletter. However, please pencil in the dates of December 10 & 11. Great Lakes will once again sponsor a FREE Coaching Clinic to our Junior Coaches as well as any Adult member. This year former USA Olympic Coach Terry Liskevych we be our guest clinician. We are requesting Terry to conduct two separate sessions directed for the lower level athlete to intermediate and from intermediate to advanced skills. The clinic will be held out at Libertyville High School. Good news in addition to enjoying a clinic put on by an ex-national team coach, current and past Div I NCAA Women s coach, the USA CAP Division will allow our clinic to earn the CAP coaches a module for their training advancement. A double bonus is a free lunch with the clinic. HOW CAN YOU BEAT THIS? Editor s Note: In the last issue I lamented about the lack of support for several clubs in not attending the 04 clinic given by Bill Neville. I was lambasted by one our junior coaches stating that one must realize that multiple hours are given to coaching and this extra time was above and beyond. I agree and disagree we all give up family and personal time for VB. We are just trying to present to all our coaches the things they are asking for and certainly hope not to offend anyone if you do not attend the clinics. Case closed. Saying Goodbye to Junior Clubs We sadly announce the closing of junior clubs within our region. The following clubs will not be with us for the 05/06 season. Premier VBC Commandos VBC CVC Boys DuPage Express VBC We are sorry to see these four clubs end their association with junior volleyball. Commandos were with GL for five seasons and Premier goes back for eight fun filled seasons. CVC is a newer boys club than the other two but will maintain their girl s club. DuPage Express ends its run after many years. Director Lori Trippi has been associated with the Region since 1981 when she was a player with West Suburban VBC. Lori has offered to be a mentor to new Directors if they need some guidance which would be a big help to someone just starting out. A big thank you to the Directors that are resigning: Niels Pedersen, Lori Trippi, Greg Adams and Adolfo Garcia. The upside of these club leaving Great Lakes is new clubs are asking for registration materials and information. Check our web site for the particulars of new junior clubs. GL will have leadership of three clubs turned over to different directors next season. Gail Baumgart is stepping down as Director of Southside VBC and the girls CVC and turning the reins over to Carrie Demke/Berry. Michelle Komer Reef is turning over the control of Prime Time VBC to Cliff Hastings, player from Children of the Corn Men s BB team. The Ace, Point, Match VBC will not skip a beat with Denise Beaudoin filling the shoes of Bob Williams who recently passed away. Bob s memory and spirit will live on through his Club under Denise s direction. We thank all the directors for providing the excellent training and competition for our junior athletes. We sincerely hope you will all stay in touch with GL Region What s Going on Outside of Volleyball??? We are always interested to hear from our members concerning birth announcements, weddings, etc. Anyone wishing to have their announcements posted on our Community Report page just send us an with the details. This is the first issue of the newsletter in as long as we can remember that we did not have any announcements to post. Keep us up to date we LOVE to hear what is going on outside of Volleyball!!!! First of all, thanks to the members of the region board and all tournament directors. As usual, another fine tournament season. Having said that, there is one aspect that needs to be addressed (again). As was discussed at the pre-season meeting last fall, the issue of tournament cancellations for Men s B is still a problem. Last year, (2004), several B tournaments were cancelled due to insufficient entries. This year the number of tournaments was reduced with the hope that with fewer dates available, they would fill to capacity. Unfortunately this did NOT happen. There were still cancellations. (If I recall, there were 2 or 3 which we entered that were ultimately cancelled. There may have been others, too.) Does this happen in other divisions? Anyway, would it make sense to run some one-pool tournaments? Or is that more hassle than its worth for the tournament directors? I don t have any other ideas right now, maybe I ll come up with something before this year s meeting in the fall. Thank s again for a great season From Joe Gedvials Uncle Lucky s Men s B Team. Thanks Joe, food for thought for September adult meeting. anyone have an idea? Dear Lea; Just wanted to send along a note of thanks and appreciation for the great job that was done by your staff of Julie Wiejak, High Performance Director and Larry Perez, Kate Brown, both coaches for my daughter Casie Sullivan who was selected from the training camp at Loyola University to travel to Austin, TX last week in the USA Volleyball GLR Youth High Performance Championships. We were very pleased for her to have this opportunity to be a part of the travel team. A very well organized program from the tryouts, training camp and to the tournament. Thank you again. Sincerely, Eileen and Patrick Sullivan of Kewanee, IL. We all appreciate the kind words about the staff at the H/P Region program.
