4 Carnival Vendor Information The PAL Program will be entering its 15 TH Season as coordinator of the Homecoming Carnival. We are presently beginning to put together the plans and details for the school-wide carnival. If you sponsor an organization which would like to host a booth at the Homecoming Carnival, please note that the PAL organization receives 10% of the profit of each booth as a way to support the work we do on behalf of others throughout the year. We greatly appreciate your support! Please take note of the following important details: ** You must sign up for your booth in the front office at the Receptionist s Desk. First come-first serve on the booth ideas. We will make a concerted effort to not have more than 2 groups selling the same type of food (major food items) and no more than 3 groups selling snack food -type items. No more than 7 groups will be allowed to sell drinks. **Please DO NOT sell drinks with your Food Booths, as this takes away from the booths who just sell drinks as their fundraiser.** And we d love to see more fun/game-type booths offered, too! ***ALSO, PLEASE BE RESPECTFUL OF GROUPS WHO TRADITIONALLY SELL THE SAME ITEMS YEAR AFTER YEAR AND NOT MOVE IN ON THEIR TRADITION. I LL SEND OUT A USUAL SALES LIST. The first day to sign up will be: THUR., SEPT 15 TH (@ 7:00 A.M.) The last day to sign up will be: MON., SEPT. 26 TH (@ 2:30 P.M.) ** Please notify your Booster Clubs of these dates & deadlines. ** The PRICE OF THE TICKETS will be $1. Please take this in consideration when choosing the prices for the items in your booth. ** Sponsors, please ensure that there will be an adult at all booths at all times during the carnival. ONLY ADULTS SHOULD HANDLE THE COLLECTION OF TICK- ETS AT THE BOOTHS. If during the carnival, a booth is found without adult supervision, it is subject to being closed. Once sign-ups are completed on the 26 th, I will plan the layout for the carnival booths and then send a flyer with Carnival Information to each organization hosting a booth along with a map of the layout of the booths. IMPORTANT THINGS TO NOTE: 1. First of all, thanks so much for participating in the HC Carnival on Thursday, September 29 th. You epitomize the great spirit of Brook! Also, the PALs greatly appreciate your support and your group s donation of 10% toward their school & community service activities. 2. The carnival will run from approximately 11:50-1:20. You are responsible for setting up your booth prior to the start time. Please secure your own table and/or chairs from the commons if you plan to use these for your booth. **Also, out of deference for our very hard-working (& short-handed) custodial staff, please make plans to return any table (& chairs) you use to the commons area following the carnival. Thanks! J 3. YOU MUST HAVE AN ADULT AT EACH BOOTH AT ALL TIMES TO SUPERVISE AND TO TAKE TICKETS. This is incredibly important! If during the carnival, a booth is found to be without adult supervision, it is subject to being closed down. 4. Please remember that all tickets sold are worth $1 each. Please plan the pricing of your booth items accordingly. ONLY ADULTS MAY TAKE TICKETS AT THE BOOTHS. (We have had some type of ticket-fiasco in previous years of the carnival & we are desperately trying to alleviate any potential problems by having adults-only in charge of tickets.) We CANNOT AFFORD to honor tickets that might be FAKE, so PAY ATTENTION to the tickets students give you. 5. VERY IMPORTANT: Following the carnival, please count the tickets you collect from your booth sales. On the outside of the envelope that the PALs will provide you, please write the number of tickets that you count. (Following the carnival, we will then have a group that will double & triple check, if necessary, the count to insure accuracy.) ONCE YOU COMPLETE YOUR COUNT, PLEASE TURN YOUR ENVELOPE IN TO MY PAL PARENT VOLUNTEERS WHO WILL BE IN THE RECEPTIONIST AREA IN THE FRONT OFFICE. You will need to sign a sheet that confirms that we received the tickets from you. Please try to do this for us before you leave for the pep rally but definitely before you leave campus. These tickets represent money and must be turned in asap. THANKS SO MUCH! 6. Let s have a super Homecoming Carnival! I know the line-up of food, drinks, desserts, and fun & games will look great! If you have any questions prior to the carnival, please me (dstone@ccisd.net) or stop by the PAL Room (Rm 508) & let me know how I can help you! Thanks for participating in this great school-wide event. See or Donna Stone (Rm 508) DSTONE@ccisd.net if you have any questions. THANKS! 4

17 The Counseling Corner Important Upcoming Dates at a Glance: 10/1 FAFSA applications open at 10/5 Financial Aid Night-6:30-8:30 pm at Clear Springs 10/12 Sophomore Class Meeting 6-7 pm in the Commons Week of 10/10 Sophomore Student Conferences 10/24-28 Red Ribbon Week 11/2 PSAT Exam Seniors Make the most of your senior year by planning ahead. There are lots of tasks and fun activities that await you this year. When you think of senior year, you may think of applying to college, Homecoming, Prom, and Graduation! So much fun ahead, but there are also choices to be made. With a bit of planning, you can have a great senior year. Apply to college early ahead of the deadlines. Make sure you ask for letters of recommendation well in advance (several weeks to a month s notice). Take time on your applications and essays so that the person receiving them has a clear picture of who you are and why you are worthy to attend their university. Start thinking about what sort of activities are important to you this year. Talk to your friends and parents about plans for Homecoming, Prom, Graduation, and other senior activities. Many plans surrounding these activities can get expensive fast, so start prioritizing and saving money now. Juniors Often, Junior year is the most difficult. Classes get harder, expectations get higher, and there are more tasks to do and decisions to make! This is the year when you should be gathering as much information as possible to make decisions about your plans after high school. Go to the College and Career Fair on November 9 so that you can get information about colleges from all over the country! Make a list of schools you want to visit with and questions you want to ask before you attend the fair. Now is the time to get serious about preparing for the ACT or SAT. The Method Prep software that the district purchased can be accessed through Naviance, and it is very helpful! A few hours of practice a week can make a huge difference in your scores. Sophomores During the week of October 10, you will be going to the College and Career Lab in room 116 to learn more about Naviance. During that time, your counselors will meet individually with you to discuss your credits and graduation plans. Many of you chose your endorsement in 8 th grade with little understanding of what it really meant. Now that you have been in high school a while and better understand the choices available to you, you and your counselor will be able to review and make any changes necessary to your graduation plan. Freshmen Your high school Grade Point Average (GPA) has begun. The grades that you make in class each day will impact your class rank and your choice of colleges. Make sure that you complete all assignments on time and study well in advance of exams to maximize your potential! 17
