Poudre Track & Field Philosophy: Everyone can be successful We are hoping for state champions, and winning meets, but more importantly we want to see people set high realistic goals, and give their best effort. If they do that, we are very proud. PR s, improvement over the season and years in the program Do we have favorites????? YES!! But probably not what you think. Our favorite athletes are often not the most talented ones. Usually the ones that listen, take feedback, support teammates, even if they never score a point.
Opportunity: Lots of different events and opportunities to compete: Most varsity meets have 59 opportunities for Girls, 55 for Boys Find the right event (s) Many examples of athletes coming and wanting to be a long jumping two miler, or boxing themselves into events, only to find they are really good at something else. Our coaches are REALLY good at identifying and directing athletes to the best fit for them. Between all of us we have worked with and seen thousands of athletes. Need to trust us. You can choose any event you want, but we can help guide you to the event you will probably have the most success in and help out the team/be on varsity. Jacob/Jesse Hurdles, Robin 800/PV, School Record holder in boys 400, Rachel believing it was not physiologically possible for her to run a 400. We do mini camps in the beginning of the year to expose athletes to different events.
What is your motivation? We welcome all intensions and abilities. Get/Stay In Shape? Get stronger/faster for other sports Break Records/Go to State/Scholarships Social Aspects We would just like to know the motivations for being out to help focus the training. Track is a No cut sport As long as: You work hard, maintain a good attitude, support your teammates, maintain grades, and communicate with your coaches.
Poudre Track & Field Philosophy Entries in meets are determined by performance in practice and Team Goals for that meet. Not always same people/relays. We try to mix up, get rest, focus on other events. Especially early on in the season. Hard work and a positive attitude is part of the equation. We will try and let you know your events 3-4 days before the competition. We set our entries based on what is best for the team, but if there are events you want to be in, let us know early and we will try and make sure that you can be entered at some point in the season. Best if the Athlete learns to advocate for themselves. Athletes can be involved in other sports/clubs if they set up a schedule with us ahead of time, and plan it out with the coaches. Might not have first priority. We have worked with soccer/baseball/jobs/theatre/etc.
Life Skills: We feel that many of the things we ask of athletes will not only make their Track performances better, but also make them better people. Be Balanced: Balance and be efficient between Track, Home, School, and Friends. Plan ahead, and proactive. Communication: Be assertive and actively communicate with coaches and teammates, parents, and the community. Proper Nutrition: Not only for energy and recovery, but for you general health. Get enough Sleep. Helps your brain and body grow and recover. Work Hard/Determination. It will pay off. Teamwork: Track has many individual aspects, but is very hard to be successful without mutual support form teammate. Finish What you start. We often have many people drop out after the first couple of weeks. The first part of the season is cold, and you don t see the results quite yet, because we plan for that to happen at the end. We want people to stay out, not just for our numbers, but to for the life lesson of not giving up on things when they get hard.
Championship Season: (MAY) -State Focused -Peaking/Tapering workouts -Focused Relays & Events Mid-Season (April) -Training Intensifies -Focused Events -Attempts at breaking into the TOP 18 State Board Early Season: (Feb-March) -Foundation Building -Technique -Experiment with different events -Meets are conditioning -Goal Setting

Motivation & Success: We as a coaching staff can help you be successful. Lots of coaching and personal experience on this coaching staff. Every year we hear people say they want certain types of success, but most people are not willing to put the work necessary. You have to really want it to get to the top level. Not everyone wants it and that is fine. Very few athletes have come though our program and really done what we have asked them to do. It does not mean you have to eat, sleep, and breath track. But even doing 80-90% of what we ask will help you get there. If we say summer strength program, or running over the winter. Do it! You have to have the trust and the desire.
Competing in College Recently we have helped several athletes to make it to the collegiate level. We have been through this process MANY times. Athletes: If you are interested please let us know, because we would love to help guide you through this process. Much easier to do if you think about this and put in the work before February of your Senior season, but it is possible. Parents: Feel free to be involved, but a college coach is much more interested in hearing from their coach/coaches, than hearing from parents right away. They will know they are getting less biased stats and information from a coach. Again, we have been through this process with MANY athletes.
The Other 22! We only work with athletes 2 hours a day. How they use the other 22 can have huge impact on success. Sleep (Good Handouts) Nutrition (Good Handouts) Breakfast (takes time getting used to if you have not) Lunch Line? Snacks at school/meets After workout protein/carbs (Chocolate Milk Any extra training/sports you want to do should be checked out with a coach, so you don t over train.

Strength & Conditioning Program: Everyone least 2-3 days/week. Varsity a minimum of 3 days. Focus on Explosion and triple extension. This will help our speed and reduce injuries. Coach Cascarina & Kiel (Not just for throwers and sprinters)
State Qualification/State Meet: Top 18 in each event. Results on the Web. Colorado Mile Split Max Preps We can see within 48 hours, where your times/distances compare with others around the state. Colorado Mile Split is a good webpage to follow.
Communication: Parent/Student Lists: Fill out the Online parent form tonight if you have not. Facebook (Lots of reminders) Twitter (Cannon) Poudre Track and Field Webpage Announcements at School Weekly Team Meetings Daily Announcements at Practice Track Message Board
Important Items for Athletes: To practice: Need Blue Card /Check list is on back of the Handbook. OCR form (medical History) Physical (Urgent Care: $40 & Walk ins) Athletic Fee (If a problem, they do installments, or ask, we have other ways we can help) Parent Information Survey Filled out Online. Driving form. Signed form from handbook. Bring/Buy proper equipment: Warm Stuff: Hats/gloves/pants/tops We recommend for meets: Big bag, small bag, and own water bottle New shoes. Talk with coaches, but Runners Roost/Altitude Running /Kholes are good places to go. If $$ a problem talk with me and there are ways we get shoes at a reduced price or free. We also have some used spikes/shoes we have access to. Be Prompt: Team Meetings (Mondays) Information/Celebratory Be out on Track ready to 3:40 or before.
Important Items for Athletes: Practice: 3:40-5:40 If you are late, you don t practice unless you have a note from a teacher, doctor, or parent. Plan on Jobs, music lessons, other extra-curricular activities to do after practice. This is ideal. If you want to be out for Track and Field and you find it will be very difficult move work/other practices/responsibilities around, we are willing to work with you. We are allowing some athletes to be involved with other sports, jobs, etc. If they can plan ahead and map out the missed days ahead of time. Case by Case Set up a plan Need to stick to it. May not have top priority for meet entries.
Communicate, Communicate, Communicate: Contact your main event Coach you work with and Coach Faulkner in case of missing practice, or conflicts. would be best. Or have a written note. Don t have your friend tell us. With employers, teachers, and parents Make up tests, homework help before school, lunch, off period, etc. 2 No call/no shows or Non-approved misses are grounds for dismissal.
Important Items for Athletes: Under armor/tights: Buy Solid BLACK! Take care of your uniforms & Equipment They are expensive $$$$ If you turn in a uniform at the end, but it s the wrong number you will be charged a $25 fee Varsity New Uniforms will be worth - $300 Competition top - $35, Shorts - $35 Warm up micro fiber top - $50, Pants - $50 Rain/Wind Clima-Fit Jacket - $60, Pants $60 TOTAL - $300.00
Important Items for Athletes: Once the athlete is at the meet, they are expected to stay the entire meet. Support Teammates We have had plenty of successful IB students on the track team. Bring work, and you will have plenty of students to help and coaches that can help with work as well. Athletes ride the bus to away meets. You must provide your own transportation for In-town meets on weekends. Check transportation schedule. They are only allowed to ride home, other than the bus if: A family member checks them out with a coach up at the TENT. Ride home with a friend of the family ONLY if they have filled out the permission form 24 hours before the meet.
Varsity Letter: A Poudre Track Varsity letters are awarded to the multi dimensional athlete. Athletes must demonstrate talent and skill, show good character and sportsmanship on and off the field, dedicated to the success of the team, and do well in school. The following are the benchmarks for achieving a varsity letter. 1) The athlete must score a total of 15 varsity points and complete the season. 2) Participating in a varsity meet counts as one point toward a varsity letter. 3) Points can be earned for Pre-season workouts, attending/putting together team activities, being a team captain, receiving fastest on the Track/Best on the Field weekly recognition.
Varsity Letter: The final condition to be met to earn a letter, even if the above steps are met, is that the athlete must participate in one of the fundraising opportunities or give back to the team. Many Parents and Athletes before us spent lots of time and money to get us the equipment and gear that we have. To ensure the quality of the program in the future we need everyone helping out. Some of the options will be listed below, but more options may exist. Check with Coach Faulkner if you have questions. Some options to fulfill this requirement: Help set up a team activity (Pasta Night/Bowling/Track Movie Night/Etc); Sell Pizza Pals; Donate Spikes/Track equipment (Some kids in our program can t afford them); Help with some behind the scene set up the Track Banquet/Poudre Invite; General Donation; Help be an official at a Jr. High meet, Brainstorm other possibilities Not going to be a team of Takers.
Poudre Track & Field Finances Why do we need to Fundraise? We get $2,800 from the district. -$2,000 for meet entry fees ($ /meet) -$400 for officials for the meets we host -$400 in awards at the end of the year banquet ============= $0 With extra coaches, new uniforms, upgrades, etc we have to cover a few thousand beyond this.
Critical Investment Year: We need the money for: ($3,500)Coaching Stipends and Gear. We want to keep our coaches, and keep them happy. We are lucky to have extra coaches this year. Many successful programs have coaches. ($2,500)Pay for new varsity tops ($300)Poles for ($300-$500 each.) ($200)Speed Equipment ($1,500) New starting blocks ($500) Saving for Replacement warms ups: Have money for when we need large items replaced. (High Jump/Pole Vault pits $5-7,000/pit) Total Goal: $8,500

Team Tent New JV warm ups Speed Equipment: Parachutes Speed Ladders Pole Vault: Indoor Boxes Torcher Devices Stop Watches Batons Where has our fundraising money gone? Meet/Team Manager: Software to run meets. Record keeping. New Shots and Disks T-shirts and Stickers to give away at meets and weekly meeting as rewards.
Poudre Track & Field Parents/Friends Boosters (We need Parents to lead the charge!) Areas of Support Communicating and Organizing( s/Calling) Helping out at Meets We can train you on most things pretty quickly. Photos/Video Pasta Dinners or Team Events Not as hard as it sounds. Would like these weekly. Snacks at Meets Fundraising/ Business Sponsor s End of the Season Banquet
Poudre Track & Field Boosters Parents/Guardians expected to help out in some way. Figure out what your resources, interests, and abilities are and let us know. Time vs. Money?? We would like to have a Parent Booster Committee instead of one person doing it all. We as coaches can do all these things, it will just take away from our time coaching and preparing. Not as fun of an experience for kids without pasta dinners, or snacks at meets. Or us Decorating at Banquets Or me Communicating directly to you. (Parent speak)
