Randall Ayers Hi Everyone, Leaves have turned, goons and goblins be knockin at our doors demanding a treat or you will receive a trick, and most of the year is behind us. Most, but not all. Still left on the docket for this year is our General Membership Meeting Novenber 5th, hosted by Wendy and Randy Britt, featuring the outstanding Mexican cuisine catered by COA restaurant in La Conner. I have it on good authority the weather will be better then last years event! I mean, how could it be worse? No, I will not regret that question. It will be fantastic weather, so get your decorations on! Remember this year s theme is WhoVille, from the Grinch who stole Christmas. Little Cindy Who will be sad if you don t participate! Not to forget our most recent event, the Oktoberfest at the Clubhouse. Members Aileen and Guy Cruise put on an outstanding event, featuring home brews from several members, brats soaked in beer and brined, all the fixings, including some awesome German potatoes! Music and dancing along with the general discussions about world problem solving through out the evening. This was the Cruises first event, and they knocked it out of the park! Thank you! Just around the corner is the Commodores Ball, January 21st. Make sure you save the date; invitations will be mailed out the first week of December. This is shaping up to be a great event! More to come in the next month. Everyone have a happy and safe Thanksgiving! There are several groups of members getting together at various spots in the Islands for Turkey Day. 3 The Channel Marker Page 3 Vice Commodore s Report... Bob Davisson Hello everyone!! I think that most of you all were able to attend Oktoberfest this year, I know that Guy and Aileen Cruise were there with their family. This was the first event that they have hosted for the club and they did an awesome job. Cindy and I had a lot of fun, that s for sure. You might ask what made this one so fun for me it was the food the brats and tater salad were a perfect match for the event for sure. Anything that even looks remotely like a hot dog catches my interest, and when it is paired with barbeque beans that makes for fine dining!! Hopefully the Cruises enjoyed hosting this event enough to do it again very soon. I know that they have offered to help others now that they are veterans of hosting. It happens to be the time of year that we are planning the events for 2017 and there are a few that need hosts. We ll be talking about it a little at the General Membership meeting coming up in hopes that we can get most of the openings filled with folks that have either hosted events in the past or are willing to host their first one like Guy and Aileen. Speaking from experience, there is always plenty of support available to host an event, and you can always count on others to pitch in and help out. As you can see from the photos below the help is not always serious, but then there is also some that is fairly serious. I m not too sure that you will be able to get the same human food processor, but someone is always there to help make the decorating fun. After the General Membership meeting we jump right into the holiday season and you know what that means decorating the clubhouse for Christmas and right after that is the Christmas Boat parade. Please plan on coming out for those unless you have tickets to Hawaii or something. See you all soon! Bob Davisson Rear Commodore

4 The Channel Marker Page 4 The Christmas boat parade is coming and it will be here before you know it. This year the theme will be a Whoville Christmas inspired by the film The Grinch. The Grinch is a bitter, grouchy, cave-dwelling green monster with a heart "two sizes too small" who lives on snowy Mount Crumpit, a steep high mountain just north of Whoville, home of the merry and warm-hearted Whos. His only companion is his unloved, but loyal dog, Max. From his cave, the Grinch can hear the noisy Christmas festivities that take place in Whoville. Annoyed, he decides to stop Christmas from coming by stealing their presents, trees, and food for their Christmas feast. He crudely disguises himself as Santa Claus, and forces Max, disguised as a reindeer, to drag a sleigh to Whoville. Once there, the Grinch slides down the chimney and steals all of the Whos' Christmas presents, the Christmas tree, and the log for their fire. He is briefly interrupted in his burglary by Cindy Lou, a little Who girl, but concocts a crafty lie to effect his escape from her home. The Grinch then takes his sleigh to the top of Mount Crumpit, and prepares to dump all of the presents into the abyss. As dawn breaks, he expects to hear the Whos' bitter and sorrowful cries, but is confused to hear them singing a joyous Christmas song instead. He puzzles for a moment until it dawns on him that "maybe Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more" than just presents and feasting. The Grinch's shrunken heart suddenly grows three sizes larger. The reformed Grinch returns all of the Whos' presents and trimmings and is warmly invited to the Whos' feast, where he has the honor of carving the Roast Beast. Start thinking about your boat decorations and costumes for the event. We will be asking for a head count of boats that are planning on being in the parade. 5 The Channel Marker Page 5 Boats, Bars, and Baseball... Glen Beam Salty's Salty's is on Elliott Bay on the way to Alki Beach. It has been there forever--since Ivar Haglund and Captain Puget were on TV. It has an old-time feel about it, with worn, painted wood trim, much like the old Lighthouse Restaurant in La Conner. It feels like home or grandma's house. The place is huge, with seating for about 500 and a downstairs banquet room that seats 1,000, for Christmas parties, I figure. The view of Seattle is fantastic, even from the bar. The bar has many TVs, with the Mariner's on and the sound off. The bartender was friendly, as was all the wait staff. They had Coors Light and Bud on tap. High-end seafood is on the menu, with prices ranging from $16 to $50--a bit pricey for me. One of the best parts is they have a great dinghy landing beach right next door. There is also a new dinghy dock about a 1/4 mile walk away; this is also where the foot ferry will take you to the Seattle waterfront. Some might want to take their big boat to Bell Harbor and dinghy to Salty's. Salty's is a must-visit historic waterfront restaurant that receives a 5 out of 5 dinghy rating. Boats, Bar and baseball--great combination!

Menu: 3 specialty tacos Beef, chicken, and pork Refried beans Spanish rice Mexican salad Salsa bar Dessert Members are encouraged to bring appetizers for fiesta hour with COA s chips and salsa provided. Here s where the appreciation part comes in: dinner with beer & sangria will be provided at no cost to the membership. If you thirst for something else, please bring it.
