1 Issue No November 2016 From the Headmaster With the end of term, and Christmas, looming, I thought it might prove helpful to attach with this newsletter a letter outlining arrangements for the end of term, the final week in particular. It is always an exciting time for all, and we are planning to make this a bumper time, in order to help celebrate our 10th anniversary. I love Christmas, not least for what it really means. It is such a wonderful opportunity to promote ideas and attitudes about the way we want our children to live their lives, and to treat others around them. It is also great fun! There will be retiring collections at the end of both the Talent Show on the Thursday evening, a real annual highlight, and the Carol Service on the Friday afternoon. Both will be in aid of the Christmas appeal for The Julian Trust, the shelter for the Homeless in St. Paul s, Bristol. We have been supporting them annually for the past 8 years and have therefore developed a close relationship with the charity. It has been a busy but enjoyable week, which has included the boys having a chance to meet and hear an author talk about her writing, and to welcome her poodle (the star of her books) to QEH. Also, the Murder Mystery day was brilliant. In the end over half the boys correctly worked out the identity of the murderer. On Wednesday, 30 boys performed Henry V on the professional stage (Tobacco Factory). In a hurry? Click below the link you require and it will take you straight to the article: Weekly Star Performers, w/c 21 November Weekly House Points, w/c 21 November Talent Show, 6.30pm on Thursday 15 December, QEH Theatre Schools Shakespeare Festival Talent Show Auditions Murder Mystery Day Year 6 Literacy Class Y6 English. Tickets will be available from the School office (no charge). We will only be able to offer 2 tickets per family to start with. You will need to apply for these tickets before 10 December. Should there be tickets left after that date we will make these available to any family who requests more, on a firstcome first-served basis. The Bar will open at 6.00pm with the first act onstage at 6.30! There will be a retiring collection at the end of the show. Schools Shakespeare Festival A huge cast of 30 boys made up from all age groups performed Shakespeare s historical play Henry V to a packed and appreciative audience at the Tobacco Factory on Wednesday evening. It was a triumph in every sense of the word! The boys really raised their game for the night and produced a truly wonderful performance, one that was in no way out of place set against the senior school that performed Macbeth after them. The considerable hard work that the boys put in, and so superbly managed and directed by Mrs. Hall, with Mrs. Russell as her assistant and Mrs. Colley as helper, really was worth it. It is the old saying that holds so true, that you get out of something what you put in. The boys certainly put a lot in, meaning the result was spectacular. I was very proud of them all! Talent Show Auditions Thank you to all the boys who have already auditioned for the Talent Show. There really is a fabulous selection of musical talent in the Junior School. However we are still looking for magicians and comedians and other variety acts. We would also like to hear from boys who may want to read out some work they are particularly proud of we know there are some great poets out there! If you would like to find out more, please come and see Mrs Colley or Mrs Russell.

2 Murder 01 Mystery Day On Tuesday, 22nd November, the QEH school boys were faced with a murder! When Professor Brian Hallett invented a time machine and sent test subject Justin Time back to meet famous historical figures, all that came back was a corpse! It was up to the QEH Junior detectives to catch the killer. The boys split into small groups and combed the school, finding clues, eliminating suspects and excitedly discussing who they thought did the murder. From codebreaking to fingerprinting, from eluding lasers to safe cracking, the QEH Junior boys enjoyed a wide range of fun and exciting activities. Most groups successfully identified the killer too one Kit Marlow. To the gallows with him! Rory Denison Year 6 Year 6 Literacy Class The boys have finished writing the final versions of their inspirational half time speeches this week and have produced some super work. Using an app called Adobe Spark Video, I ve been able to put some of the boys speeches to visuals and music, which has proved very effective. Here are links to the work of Sam House and Felix Duckworth. Well done boys. Sam Felix Mr R Hall Y6 English. Motivational Speeches In English the Year 6 boys have been looking at various sports motivational speeches and using these as inspiration for their own writing. They have produced some fantastic speeches, a few of which are below: Team GB s cycling Head Coach, Isaac Jefferis, gives a team speech before a race. When wolves of doubt are hunting you down, when sharks of anxiety are closing in on you, when fear itself is snapping at your heels, do not lose sight of what you are doing this for. You know how good you are, it s time to prove how good you are. There are no second chances. There is only this moment and the next moment. Every one of these moments is a test that you can take once and only once! If you get a shot at victory, make sure you take it! Because the only thing between making history and being history, the only thing you can count on, is you! I see before me a team who are waiting for a chance to write their names in the history books. Well your time has come. Look your team mates in the eye and tell them with all your heart, with all your soul, that what you are about to give them on that track is your absolute best! Do it for the fans, do it for your family, do it for your country. It s you versus them, you versus last year, this year. It s you versus second place. So let s see what you ve got! Motivational coach, Harry Penhale, gives an emotional speech. Whether you win this or not, you will play with pride and honour. To represent you passion, your convictions and your persistence. It s time to ride high on the crest of the tallest waves. It s time to tame the wolves of fear. It s time to cast your name in gold. You re the emperors, the knights of this brilliant opportunity. Seize this chance and give your absolute best! Edward Tothill gathers his team around him and delivers a key game-changing speech What has happened has happened, but what happens next is what we make it. You will not want to remember this day unless you play with pride and honour. Be the best you can be. Every moment of your life is a trial for victory. When wolves of doubt are hunting you down, you ve got to dig deep. It s time to move like cheetahs, to think like eagles. You don t play for a cup. You don t play for me. You play to write your names in the history books. The clock is ticking. Let s see what you ve got! Mr H Burlingham E-Safety Please find attached to this newsletter the latest edition of the online e-safety magazine called Ditto courtesy of the Junior School s e-safety adviser. Please do take a moment to read it through as the whole issue of the safety of young children on the internet or through social media is growing exponentially, and is beginning to be a considerable cause for concern to us all. Royal Aeronautical Society Family Christmas Lecture, Queen s Building, Bristol University The Bristol branch of the Royal Aeronautical Society is holding a family friendly Christmas Lecture at 6.30pm on Thursday 1 December. The talk is being given by Rhys Phillips, a radio personality and award winning science presenter who has performed this lecture all over the world. The theme of the talk is lightning and it will be exciting and interactive, with lots of demonstrations and experiments performed live on stage. The event is free and aimed specifically at children and teenagers, a great way for them to see science in action outside the classroom. For more information, please contact Anna Pugh on or by at ann.pugh@airbus.com. A poster is also attached. Christmas Fun Ballet Class I have attached a poster giving details of the above activity which is being held at Redmaids High Junior School during the holidays. Following on from the successful session that Year 3 enjoyed recently, some of the boys may wish to join another class.
