1 Issue No November 2018 Dear Parents The half term seems like a long time ago as the boys have once again had a busy week. In many lessons, we have focussed on the First World War and, as part of our work, had a visit from Kevin Hicks of the History Squad. There is a report further down the page on this event. On Saturday, we have our Fireworks at Failand. May I remind parents not to bring sparklers or fireworks as these are very dangerous in crowds. Please come along, enjoy the display and the lovely food on offer. Next week, on Tuesday and Thursday we have our Parents Evenings. The Lizzies is an annual QEH film making competition that inspires students to make short films. Run by the Friends of QEH, the competition is open to all students both Juniors and Seniors. Students can make a film individually or with a group of friends. For the Junior boys, making a film often becomes something of a family project! This week we are announcing the Lizzies 2019 theme and on Monday 26 November, we will hold a film making workshop to help students get started. This year the workshop will have a special First Time Film Makers session, covering everything you need to make your first film. Parents are welcome to attend the workshop with their sons too. The submission deadline for Lizzies' films is Monday 18 March 2019 and on Friday 17 May next year we will hold the Lizzies Awards Night where all Lizzies films will be screened and prizes awarded by film industry professionals. Every Lizzies winner is awarded a Lizzies figurine and 50 prize money. Last year George Burman (now in Year 6) won the Lizzies Juniors category with a funny film about what happened when his mum got a bit frazzled. You can watch George s film here: Making a Lizzies film may reveal hidden talents in your son! Creativity, organization and team work are all part of the process. Lizzies film makers talk of the huge sense of achievement they feel once their film is finished. Now that s something worth spending time on! Lizzies 2019 Film Making Theme This year s Lizzies competition theme is Hidden in Plain Sight, following the tradition of using hidden powers to generate tension and excitement in films. The theme can be interpreted in any way to come up with a short, 3-minute film. Films must be submitted by the 18 th March deadline and could potentially win a 50 prize! Students can choose between one of two workshop sessions: First Time Film Makers will learn the key steps of movie making, how to create a compelling film story and how to turn that story into visual scenes. They ll also get a good grounding in camera work, shot types, editing and sound. Intermediate and Advanced Film Makers will work on developing their film story, genre and style and will find out how to finesse each element of the production process. History Squad On Thursday, the boys had a visit from Kevin Hicks of The History Squad. In a very moving and personal account, Kevin took the pupils through the First World War, why some people wear a poppy and the impact the First World War still has today upon our world. The boys found it thrilling, moving and very thoughtful. On Tuesday, Year 6 visited Bristol Cathedral to view the WW1 Remembrance Exhibition. This inspired the boys to write some Remembrance poetry: They were shot down, they were dead, Dribbling out of their bodies, liquid blood red. Tomorrow they won t wake safe in their bed, Names forever will be said. Jeffrey Zhang While the Germans fire shells into the air, All we can do it sit in prayer. You know they want you dead, Always aiming at your head. Over the top is suicide, I ve heard my friends tragic cries. The mud in the trenches, The horrible stenches. Losing our lives, Is not a surprise. Poisonous gas in the air, Still the Germans do not care. Blood is all we see, This war is such a misery. George Firebrace At the end of the war, we were all ashamed. Everyone thought Germany was to blame. In every soldier s soul, fear and doubt, You will hear the officers shout! Magazine Club This week s article is about Jellyfish and has been researched and written by Alex de Jong in Year 4. Please see attached. Mrs K Colley Club Cancellations There is no Art Club on Tuesday 13 and 20 November. Tennis Club Is also cancelled on Tuesday 13 November 13 November because of Parents Evening. Endless shells falling out of the sky, Newspapers continue telling us lies. The soldiers saying their goodbyes, Mothers will never again be nigh. Going over the top is the least you want to do, Some of don t even have shoes! Bullets skimming your helmet, your ears, Screaming all around gives you fears. One by one they drop to the ground, Germany s giving us a right old pound. Guns shelling us like lightening, Men throwing gas is frightening! Azlan Mesen

3 The sorrow of war lies with guns, injury and death. The fields of poppies like ghosts of soldiers, forgotten and remembered. The constant blast of life-taking weapons, meant for destruction. What has the world come to? Everyone tells a different story, all of them sorrowful, mournful but with the same ending. The fields of childhood reduced to rubble, the trees of wisdom now smouldering stubs. The sky of life scarred with smoke, The constant flood of life ebbs form bodies nigh. Crosses appearing like poppies. Cold insufferable hostility of bullets whipping past you head. The imminent endless possibility of death. Mrs Parasto Ardalan Junior Friends Diary for the Week Sports Update Man of the Match v BGS U8s Howard Wu U9As Alex Jones U9Bs George Davenport-Cooper The boys in Year 3 and 4 had an excellent afternoon of rugby against BGS - well done to all who played. Next week will be a busy one with lots of matches taking place and all the boys who are available will be playing. I will you the relevant information. On Monday, both the U8s and U9s are home to the Downs School. This is a change as the U9s were originally meant to play away but we have rearranged it for a home fixture. The boys will be back at school at the usual time On Wednesday, all the boys in Year 5 and 6 will be playing in matches against the Grange School, Monmouth. The U11s are away, and will travel by minibus. Return time will be 4.45pm and collection will be from outside the Theatre. All the boys in Year 5 will be at home. Good luck to everyone. On Friday, the U11s will welcome the touring side from Bedford Modern School. Unfortunately they are only bringing the Year 6 boys, so the U10 games will not take place. Next Friday, 16 November is also the trip to see the Bristol Flyers and I will send out the tickets next week when they arrive. Please remember to always bring a tracksuit to games to change into as the weather is most certainly starting to turn.
