1 Cooperative Extension Service Barren County 1463 West Main Street Glasgow, KY (270) Fax: (270) Butterfly Basics will be taught by Kentucky Master Gardeners Bonnie Nance and Glenda Burke, join us on March 6 at 10 a.m. at the Extension office. We hope everyone has been surviving this cool weather. If you are anything like us then spring fever has set in. Seed catalogs are in and plans for the season are already in motion. We have exciting events coming up at the Barren County CES office, that cover a variety of topics. We are working with agents in surrounding counties to hold a Fruit Tree & Blueberry Pruning Workshop. It will be held in Metcalfe County with a hands-on demonstration on February 24 at 11 a.m. There will be a Tobacco GAP Training held at the Trojan Academy on March 20 at 6 p.m. There will be another Marketing for All training on the topics of How to Get Paid & Identifying New Markets on March 12 at 9 a.m. If you need to know more feel free to call the office. Barren County Beekeepers will be conducting a series of four classes for beginner beekeepers. Each class is one hour in length and will be held the fourth Monday of February, March, April, and May. Landscaping 101 will be held on March 31 at 10 a.m. with guest speaker Katrina Kelly. We will also be Cooking with the Calendar every 3rd Wednesday at 10 a.m.

6 Page 6 Getting Ready for Spring Calving Season The breeding season for those producers choosing spring calving is right around the corner. Now is time for making preparations for a successful breeding season. Consult your veterinarian about the pre-breeding vaccination program that best suits your herd. While talking with your vet, go ahead and schedule to have bull soundness evaluations (BSEs) for your herd sires. Maybe 2018 is the year you decide to synchronize and artificially breed your replacement heifers. Securing your synchronizing supplies and make AI sire selections are tasks that need to be completed. Ensuring that your mineral supplementation program is what it should be, perhaps you will consider the UK Beef IRM mineral that is specially formulated for KY beef cattle. Producers need to make your fly control decision now and have on hand the materials you will be using to control flys in your beef herd. An evaluation of watering systems is needed. Make sure tanks start out clean, and automatic water fountains are functioning properly. A tune up of your electric fencing energizer may be worth your time and effort. Adding additional ground rods, and replacing broken or wore insulators will make sure your fence will hold in your cows and bulls. If you have any questions about any of the ideas in this article, feel free to contact the Barren County Cooperative Extension Service for more details. Beekeeping Classes offered by Barren County Beekeepers Thinking about starting a new hobby? Interested in learning about beekeeping? Come join us. Members of the Barren County Beekeepers are conducting a series of four classes for beginner beekeepers. These classes are geared to help anyone wishing to get started but know nothing about beekeeping. A few of the subjects that will be covered are, the science of bees, bee biology, bee reproduction, types of and assembly of equipment, how to set up and start a hive, harvesting your honey, bee pests, products of the hive, and much more. Each class is one hour in length and will be held the fourth Monday of February, March, April, and May and held at the Barren County UK Extension office, located at 1463 W Main St, from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm. Classes are free of charge and open to the public. Dates and subjects February 26th class will cover life inside the bee hive. March 26th class will cover all things about equipment. April 23rd class will cover, getting and starting your bees. May 28th class will cover, collecting and harvesting your honey crop.
