1 4-H CLOVER CORNER NEWS VOLUME 6, ISSUE 2 NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2015 Serving Johnson County Youth The Johnson County 4-H Shooting Sports Club recently traveled to Berea and Wilmore, Ky for the State Shooting Sports competition. SyMbols for FUN = Fabulous Food Recipe-Captain Fit s Breakfast Parfait (Recipe printed with permission and courtesy of Matthew E. Alleyne) Ingredients: 2 cups non-fat vanilla yogurt 1 cup sliced strawberries 1 cup blueberries 3/4 cup Rice Krispies Cereal Directions: FOODS and Nutrition 1. Have an adult slice 1 cup strawberries before you begin 5. Sprinkle 1 1/2 tablespoons of cereal over fruit layers 2. Place 2 tablespoons of yogurt on bottom of 2 glasses 6. Cover with 2 tablespoons of yogurt 3. Spread single layer of strawberries on top of yogurt 7. Repeat steps until glasses are full. 4. Spread a single layer of blueberries over the strawberries Page 3 of 6

4 BeeF N IT Up with 4-H PumpkinS and Livestock On October 24, Beef N It Up was held at the Davis Farm. 4-H Pumpkin Decorating was offered as an activity for the attending youth and their parents. Displays highlighting pumpkin nutrition information with handouts and recipes were also available to parents. Pumpkins were found in the Pumpkin Patch and harvested by the young people so they could begin the process of decorating. Thirty pumpkins were decorated by either carving or painting the surface. Also, Katie Cantrell with parents Bryan and Crystal were with us to show youth how to prepare a heifer for Livestock Showmanship. Katie is a member of the Lawrence County Livestock Club and we appreciated her willingness to share her expertise! 8th Grade Dose of REALITY (STORE) On November 19th, UK Cooperative Extension s Johnson County 4 H Youth Development Program will be partnering with the Johnson County Middle School, Food City, Paintsville Junior High, the 4-H Teen Club, community volunteers and businesses to offer the 4-H Reality Store program to 8th graders. The purpose of the 4-H Reality Store is: to help youth become aware of their need for basic skills in financial planning, goal setting, decision making and career planning, to clarify the need for young men and women to examine their attitudes about their futures and their career aspirations, and to motivate students to stay in school. The 4-H Reality Store is an active, hands-ons, real life simulation for 8th graders which gives young people the opportunity to explore career opportunities and make lifestyle and budget choices similar to those adults face on a daily basis. Participants assume they are 25 years old and have completed basic educational requirements for their specific occupation. Students then draw for a family situation. Students may be married or single with one or two chil- dren. The participants are the sole provider of income for the family. Participants are given the opportunity to draw for an occupation and are given a paycheck for the monthly equivalent for the salary of that occupation. The youth then begins the 4-H Reality Store journey by visiting vendors selling the necessities and luxuries they will encounter as an adult. Every person will have at least one child and will deal with an unexpected emergency expense. For more information, call Dianna at Page 4 of 6

5 Field trip programs can be scheduled at the Johnson County Extension Office. There are no registration/activity fees for the event unless listed in the brochure. In the case of a day long event, we do ask that schools pack lunches and send for their group. Offerings are listed below. There are a limited number of field trips available.
