1 4-H Clover Corner News VOLUME 8, ISSUE 1 Summer 2017 Serving Johnson County Youth 4-h communicates with speechburger Elementary 4-H School Clubs had the opportunity to choose curriculum for the monthly 4-H school club meetings. Two schools Porter Elementary and Paintsville Elementary chose to participate in the 4-H Speech Burger program. This program is designed to work with teachers language arts programs to guide youth through the process of selecting speech topics, researching sources for content, organizing content in an outline and converting the outline in to a speech that is ultimately transferred to note cards as a completed 4-H Speech. The speech length for elementary youth is 3-5 minutes. With the support and follow through of teachers, a total of 125 youth progressed through the programming. For the 4-H County Speech Competition culminating event, youth were given the opportunity to present their speech to the peers at the school level. Over 64 youth presented their speeches to their classmates. From those presentations, they earned Blue, Red or White ribbons. Those individuals earning blue ribbons were invited to a County Communication Day. Online Access: Visit our Website: johnsonextension.com Check our FACEBOOK! 4 HANDS: Caring with Community Service The Johnson County 4-H program received wonderful reports in the school year of 4-H members participating in Community Service projects designed to give back to others. Whether at home or abroad, these youngsters put words to actions to set excellent examples of how to think of others before themselves. We would like to recognize the clubs who reported on their progress! Flat Gap Elementary s 4 th grade 4-H club members worked together to provide care boxes and gifts to the local Senior Citizens home. These young people went the extra mile and took the time to deliver their treasures and speak to the residents. Paintsville Elementary s 4 th grade 4-H club members (60 in number) combined their efforts to bring Christmas to 3 local youth. The students decided they did not want to do a classroom gift exchange and instead donated gifts (and even had a gift wrapping party to finish the job) to help provide a Christmas to 3 lucky youngsters. The 58 members of Paintsville s 5 th grade 4-H clubs chose to participate in Shoebox Ministries which is an effort to provide Christmas items to young people who might not otherwise receive gifts during the holiday. The clubs donated items and were able to put together 10 Christmas boxes to be sent overseas to youth in other countries. The 62 members of Paintsville Elementary s 6 th grade 4-H clubs decided to show their appreciation of our Nation s soldiers and the sacrifices they make for us every day. The members donated phone cards, personal hygiene items and other necessities. They also took the time to write individual letters to be included in the boxes. One of the soldiers was still stateside and one of the soldiers was located overseas. These young people really wanted their military soldiers to know they are valued and appreciated for their service to our country and its citizens. The Johnson County Teen clubs also got into the spirit of giving with the Middle Club making and donating 10 no-sew lap quilts to Mountain Manor and 9 no-sew lap quilts for children to Paul B. Hall Medical center, and visiting again later to help the residents with a crafts and planting morning. The high school 4-H members participated in variety of service projects including Sole Hope (shoes for people in Africa), an Easter egg hiding effort to assist Food City, Mountain Homeplace and the young Easter egg seekers, Beef-N -It-Up and bell ringing for the Salvation Army! They continued by assisting others with a variety of events for younger 4-H members including the 8 th grade 4-H Reality Store, 4-H Dollars and Sense for 4-6 graders, and the County 4-H Variety Show. Please join us in congratulating our young people and their grownups for thinking of others and making the effort to give back to make a positive difference in our community.
