May s Program April 2016 Vol 58, Issue 8 Meeting Place First Baptist Church Daves Avenue Los Gatos, CA Next Meeting Friday May 6, :30 P.M. Doors Open 7:00 P.M. Dues Sep 1, 2016 Aug 31, 2017 Adults - $12.00 Contact Information Mary Collins, President mc.rescuesgreys@gmail.com WELCOME, Y ALL WE RE TAKIN A LI L TRIP THIS HERE MONTH-OFF TO LU ZEANA! Carl and Marilyn Boro are just back from the Louisiana Convention with cameras full of pictures which Carl will share with us at the May CBRIS meeting on Friday, May 6. The Louisiana iris grow tall and in abundance down south in all their glory...enjoying and thriving in that climate zone. The LA species grow in the swampy areas of the deep South, while bearded iris do not survive very well in that environment. Many of the best known LA hybridizers live in the Southern states---among them are Ron Betzer and wife Euginie. Ron was a former member of CBRIS for many years. Carl & Marilyn, who make the trip to the southland every year for the LA Convention, will have seen them for a visit and will be able to share Ron s current hybridizing activities with club members. While living in Santa Clara County, Ron began his hybridizing work with the introduction of Honey Galore the LA with multiple blooms the color of golden toast. This meeting presentation will give all of us an excellent opportunity to see some of the best and newest LAs that will be showcased at the 2016 LA Convention. DON T MISS THE FLIGHT, Y ALL. GET READY FOR THE TRIP DOWN SOUTH! We will also be handing out the ribbons and awards for the recent CBRIS Spring Show and Sale. Get ready to whoop, holler, and clap your hands for the members who worked hard all year long to win top honors at our show. Bring your own cameras to take pictures if you d like...or to have someone take pictures of YOU---- if you were one of our 2016 Show winners!! Philippa Alvis, VP & Program Co-chair with Carolyn Craft.. CBRIS Region 14 American Iris Society Photos by Carl Boro

Craig and Karin Elaine and Nancy eiteit The Reiters It was time to say goodbye and hello to new adventures as Jane and Ken Reiter have retired, sold their home and moved to Arroyo Grande. They will be greatly missed but we say See you later. We wish them well. eiteiteiteiteiteiteiteiteiteiteiteiteiteiteiteiteiteiteiteiteiteit
CBRIS-May 2016 Page 3 of 17 April 1, 2016 CBRIS Meeting Minutes Mary opened the meeting with the banging of a spoon on the lectern (gavel is missing) to get the raucous group seated for the meeting. Philippa introduced our speaker, club member Helen Bliven, Master Judge, (at least 15 years as a judge) to give a demonstration on staging and grooming iris for show. Helen Bliven: Getting ready for the Spring Show When Helen was new to iris, she wanted to know how to pick good iris and what made a good iris, so she started taking classes, then all of a sudden, she was a judge! The key to iris judging: Proportion. Proportion. Proportion. Proportion of stalk to tube. Don't let a branch juncture rest on the tube top. Showed removing a spent blossom without damaging the spathe (blossom covering). Handle the cut stalks by the spathe to avoid fingerprints. Calla lily stalks, if you have them, make good shims. The candelabra should be viewed horizontally, not at an angle, so place your tag accordingly (at the intended front). Assemble an iris show tool box: clippers or good scissors; hand towels; and cotton balls. Tissue is too harsh for removing fingerprints (even though it's recommended in the judge's handbook). Show scoring is 75% on culture of how well the plant has been grown and 25% on the grooming and presentation. Following the demonstration, we split up into four stations to try grooming and presenting iris ourselves. Mary thanked everyone who provided refreshments. We had not one, but TWO cakes! One cake was for Ken Reiter's retirement and one for Jane and Ken's goodbye as this was their last meeting before their move. Mary said Happy Birthday to Mary Lou, Richard, Jean, Pat, Carolyn M. and Linda. The position of director board member is open and will now be filled by Linda Stremel. Jane held that position and also laminated the photos for the sale potted iris, along with several other contributions. Additionally, the Sunshine position Jane held is now open. The club gave Jane a gift of a lovely piece of yard art for all of her contributions to the club. They'll be back in July for the picnic. They're moving to Arroyo Grande and have dug up about 110 pots of Iris to take with them! We had three new members join us! Craig Tarr (president of Monterey Bay) and his wife, Karin Tarr. Nancy Fradette discovered us at the SF Flower and Garden show. Meeting ended and the iris door prize drawing was held.

CBRIS-May 2016 Page 5 of 17 Master Gardener Sale Thanks to all of you who contributed your time and effort to help make our participation in the 2016 Spring Garden Market a success! The weather was excellent, and the Customers were plentiful. With the recent spring showers still fresh on their minds, everyone seemed optimistic about the prospects for this coming growing season. We only came home with ten of the plants we brought to the Market. Well, that's not entirely true. I think all of us came home with tomatoes, peppers, flowers, and other assorted plants and things from the other vendors there ;-). It's not too soon to start making plans to be there next year! Mark Greene Photo by Mark Greene Wistful Corner Any club members have extra rhizomes of these irises? Jane Kwant Mikey Mary Center Ice Absolute Treasure Houdini Devonshire Cream 'Florentine Silk Home Style Navy Blues Queen's Circle Send me your wistful list and I will publish it in the next CBRIS newsletter. It never hurts to ask. CBRIS members like to share.
Page 6 of 17 CBRIS-May 2016 The Colors of Spring CBRIS Show, April 9-10, 2016 It was a fine show, and with 99 entries, we definitely showed off the colors of spring! Thanks to Westgate Mall, we had the full use of the Center Court to set up our tables. They also provided us with 38 tables and 20 chairs at no charge to CBRIS. We also had two areas to work in and store all the extra items needed to put on an iris show. We are very fortunate to have this arrangement with Federal Realty and Westgate Mall. Many helping hands made my job easy this year. Mikey Lango was a terrific Artistic Chair and inspired many to provide beautiful displays. Peter Marra saved my bacon (and a lot of my time) by taking care of the printing of the show schedules and they looked very professional. Kalpana Shyam managed to get our show mentioned with an iris picture in various newspapers a week before the show! Mary Collins and Mark Greene picked up and delivered all of the potted iris so we could make some money. Mary also stepped up to take care of placement when Carl Boro was laid low with the flu. This also meant that Marilyn Boro was absent, Lynn Stuart ably took over as Registrar. Jane Jordan took over the Awards Chair and did all the ribbon ordering, arranged the clerks baskets, set up the Queen s Table, had the trophies engraved and arranged everything for Awards night. Thanks also to Mikey for keeping us supplied with cookies and to Elaine Fischer for keeping us supplied with drama! It was wonderful to have so many new members get involved. Many entered iris in the horticulture division and artistic displays. Karin and Craig Tarr helped on Friday night set up, and Marilyn Lang and Cara Vainish assisted as clerks. Jane Kwant and Alice Gary helped with hospitality. This year we had so many different types of irises displayed. Garry Knipe brought in his beautiful seedlings and PCI s. Besides tall bearded iris, we also had border bearded, intermediate bearded, miniature tall bearded, standard dwarf bearded, arilbreds, Siberians, species, spurias, Japanese, Louisiana and Pacific Coast. Whew! The Queen of the Show and Best Tall Bearded was awarded to Elaine Fischer for the beautiful Hopeless Romantic, hybridized by Joe Ghio. Best Bearded Other Than Tall was won by John Pesek for Pop Culture, an IB hybridized by Paul Black. Best Historic was won by me for Queen of May, and Best Beardless was won by Elaine Fischer for Rodeo Blue, a spuria. Garry Knipe won Best Seedling for 1012 JCJ, a PCI. Best Design in Artistic was won by Cara Vainish and Best Youth Design was won by Colton Danner. People s Choice Winners will be announced at the meeting! Last, but not least, I would like to thank our judges, Philippa Alvis, Kathy Braaten, Anna Cadd, Carolyn Craft, Alleah Haley, Marilyn Kaplan, Phyllis Wilburn, Linda Stremel and Jane Jordan, apprentice judge. A big thank you to all who helped and participated! Carol Dahout, Showchair

CBRIS-May 2016 Page 11 of 17 April s Program If you missed last month s meeting you missed an excellent program. Philippa Alvis planned a mini show for CBRIS members. Helen Bliven was our speaker while demonstrating how to display an iris correctly. Most of you now know that irises have a front and a back. They do not like to be displayed too tall nor too short and they do not want to be in a holder that is too big or too small. They want to stand straight. They do not like to have fingerprints showing nor have bad leaves, Bugs? Definitely not. No livestock, please. After Helen s demonstration, club members broke into four groups to prepare for a mini show. Members readied irises for display and then an apprentice judge and a judge critiqued and judged the irises. It was a very informative evening. Thank you, Philippa and Helen.

CBRIS-May 2016 Page 13 of 17 Merry Days, Once, again, our leader the merry Mary is too busy to write about how to celebrate the many holidays in May. As caring club members we will help direct her to some of the important activities. We start off on the first with May Day. As a child how many of you danced around the May pole? (Now we would probably get dizzy and fall over.) I bet some of you picked flowers and left them on a front porch for a neighbor or a friend to find. Please feel free to leave an iris or two on my doorstep. Absolutely we cannot forget May 8 th as it is Mother s Day. For those of us with moms still around or those of us that are moms, let s be remembered. Did you know that every May 8 th is Iris Day? (Yep, found it on the web so it must be true). If you were in Japan you would be putting some Iris leaves in your bath in order to prevent illness. Hey, we do look like a healthy bunch (at least most of the time.) Not entirely sure why I should mention that May 9th is National Lost Sock Day. Well, before there was not much use for that poor lost sock but now we know better, thanks to Riley Probst. Save those loners to put over you budding iris when there is a frost forecast. It will save your bloom. May 10th is Clean up Your Room Day. Hmm...Can that be switched to Clean Up your Garden Day? Mine surely could use a bit of elbow grease. Before I run out of room I must mention Memorial Day on May 30th. It began as Decoration Day. As we all know, it is a day to remember all the people that died serving in the country s armed forces. Most of us have lost a few loved ones. Let s remember them with an iris flower or two at their gravesites. Hope to see all of you at the Spring Regional, April 29, May 1 and 2 nd. Whether you choose to attend the Iris Show, view Nola s Iris Garden, or participate in a judges training, enjoy. There is always the opportunity to learn more about the Iris. I never tire of the Regionals as there is so much to do and so much fun to be had with a lovely group of people.
