April 4, 2014 April Meeting Interested in learning how to avoid the following awards at our Spring show, "Irises on Parade"? Professor of Entomology s Award for most "livestock" FBI's CSI Award for most fingerprints Edward Scissorhands' Award for most obvious trimming Our April program will show you how to identify these mistakes and how to avoid making them. We'll have live staged horticultural entry examples for review. Plus our panel of esteemed CBRIS judges will provide tips and explanations on how to stage your iris to best advantage for show judging. Don't risk landing your iris entries in the Hall of Shame. Attend April's meeting to help propel your beauties to the Table of Fame! Note: We need iris in bloom for staging examples. If you have any blooming, please contact me, or bring them to the meeting 30 minutes EARLY so we can prep them. Thanks! Club Membership Dues Sep 1, 2013 Aug 31, 2014 Adults - $12.00 Contact Information: Barbara Pesek, President bpesek@sbcglobal.net P.S. Thank you to Mary Collins for the program suggestion! Lynn Stuart, VP & Program Chair March Meeting Thanks to Carolyn Craft all club members went home with new plant cuttings for their gardens at last month s meeting. More than that, we now know how to root almost any plant. Thanks, Carolyn!
2 Page 2 of 10 CBRIS-Apr 2014 Tidbits under Snail Shells I ve been happy to find empty snail shells in my neighbor s yard that borders our yard. I try to take care of them (with delicious tasting pellets) before they cross the divider into our yard. John likes to look for them in our garden after it rains. What rain? April is a busy month for irisarians. We have the Spring Garden Market on April 12 th. Please come to the meeting prepared to sign up for booth duty. The Garden Tour of our member s irises is April 19 th. We have our Spring Show on April 26 th and 27 th. Again, there will be sign-up sheets at the meeting. Lastly, we have our own irises to surprise, thrill and please us. Barbara Pesek, CBRIS President Passing April Birthdays Alice Jo Clark We called her Alice. Some called her Alice Jo and others called her AJ. Of course, her three children called her mom. Our friend Alice passed away on March 10, She was noted for her wonderful laugh and big smile, which were inherited by her daughters. At her memorial service several CBRIS members heard about Alice s many talents that included being an actress in several performances at the King Dodo Playhouse in San Jose. She played a Swedish maid with such an excellent accent that a Swedish person from the audience spoke to her in Swedish thinking she was from that country. Alice had a terrific voice, played the organ, and was a dancer and gymnast. She was a brilliant student and photographer. Several friends mentioned her marvelous iris garden. We wished we could have heard more about her water tower climbing experience! We ll miss you our friend, board member, rhizome potter, and Christmas Barbara party and hostess. 3 CBRIS-Apr 2014 Page 3 of 10 March 7, 201 CBRIS Meeting Minutes President, Barbara Pesek, opened the meeting at 7:40 p.m., and wished happy birthday to Logan Danner, Rosemary Chivers, Jennifer Vanden Beukel, Dave Henley, and Jane Anne Walters. Jane Anne Walters, and Barbara and John Pesek were thanked for providing the refreshments for the meeting. Barbara announced that the Spring Region 14 bulletin would be on the Region 14 website any day now. Our VP, Lynn Stuart, was introduced, and in turn, introduced the delightful Carolyn Craft as our speaker for this evening to enlighten us about propagating all kinds of plants including lavender, African Violets and begonias, hydrangeas and lilacs and spider plants, and even roses for the very adventurous. Who knew? All you need is Dip & Grow and Carolyn s magic green fingers. If you missed this meeting you will be penalized with an extra hour of weeding and no new plants. After our break, we regrouped and Carol Dahout discussed our upcoming show, Irises on Parade!, April 26 and 27 th at the Westgate Mall. She will have the programs and flyers at the April meeting, and sign-up sheets. She expects all hands on deck! Funny, isn t she? Lisa Ayala announced the Artistic Arrangement categories, and asked members to register with her so we know how much space to allow. She will be taking further sign-ups at the April meeting. Kalpana Shyam is on top of the publicity for the show, and is working with Philippa and Dave Henley to be sure we get the word out to the public. Carolyn Craft spoke about the San Francisco Flower show March 19 th 23 rd, and was fully staffed. This is always a great event, and those of us who did the staffing thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you, Carolyn and Wayne, for once again chairing this event. Barbara reminded us that April 1 st is the deadline to pay $85 for the Spring Regional registration, and it would be $105 thereafter. The Spring Regional is May 2-4 in Santa Rosa. Mikey Lango passed out sign-up sheets for the upcoming Spring Garden Market on April 12. This will be the best place to get your tomatoes, peppers and spring flowers. Irises, anyone? Jane Jordan announced that she has three gardens lined up for the Garden Tour on April 19 th, Chad Schroter, Jane Reiter and Jane Jordan. She is looking for a few more good gardens, so please let her know.

6 Page 6 of 10 CBRIS-Apr 2014 Spring Regional Raffle Basket CBRIS is donating a basket for the Spring Regional raffle. This year our theme will be desserts. Please bring an item or two to the April meeting so that we may put together a nice basket. Possible ideas: muffin or brownie mixes; shortbread cookies, chocolate bars, extracts, tea bags or coffee...maybe some favorite recipes or cake pans, pie plates or a nice serving tray? Anything that you would want to add to the basket! Trophies Treasurer s Report Beginning balance, March 1, 2014 $12, No additions Expenses: AIS affiliation fee Ending balance, March 31, 2014 $12, If you won a trophy at last year s show, please bring it to the next CBRIS meeting. We are getting ready for the next Spring Show. Thank you! Culture Yes! We are finally getting some good rain. Hopefully the rain did not beat down your early iris bloom stalks. Stake them if necessary. With more rain we will soon have more weeds, snails, aphids and leaf spot. Keep an eye out for all problems. Early intervention will keep your garden happy and healthy with lovely stalks to enter in the Spring Show. After all, the show is called Irises on Parade. One definition of a parade is a large public procession. Let s make that parade happen with proper care for your iris garden.

8 Page 8 of 10 CBRIS-Apr 2014 CBRIS Garden Tour Saturday, April 19, 2014 is the annual CBRIS garden tour. There are three gardens on the tour this year and they are all conveniently located along Bascom Avenue/Los Gatos Boulevard in San Jose and Los Gatos. The schedule allows ample time to travel between gardens and for a lunch break. The travel time is on average 15 minutes between gardens giving time for the hosts to join the tour before and after their own gardens will be open. You are invited to bring a brown bag lunch to eat at Jane Jordan's garden. If you would like to visit some gardens, but not others, please adhere to the schedule. SCHEDULE/DIRECTIONS: The directions start from Hamilton and Bascom Avenues intersection AM Jane and Ken Reiter, 1505 Ramita Court, San Jose In the front yard you are greeted with bearded iris in raised beds. The side yard and backyard also have iris including some of the door prize iris and lots of PCIs. There is a 7-1/2" Gauge railroad (real, not toys) in the backyard that has provided much enjoyment for their family and friends. Driving Directions: From the intersection of Bascom and Hamilton Avenues: Head north on Bascom Avenue. Make a U-turn at Pamlar Avenue, Make a slight right onto Borello Drive, Turn left onto Ramita Court. The Reiter's home is on the right side of the street Noon Chad Schroter, Garden Hill Drive, Los Gatos Chad says he has a mixed garden with lots of Iris and Watsonia and Roses and Salvias and Semi-tropical plants. The garden is all in the front yard. Some trees had to be removed. So Chad added some raised beds that contain the club s DP iris from Joe Ghio and some from Napa Valley Iris Garden (Painters). Driving Directions from the Reiter's: Head north on Ramita Ct toward Borello Drive, Turn right on Borello Dr, Turn right onto Bascom Ave. Follow Bascom (it changes to Los Gatos Boulevard at Hwy 85) to Lark. Turn right on Lark, then left on Garden Hill Drive. Bear right to stay on Garden Hill Drive. Chad's house will be the third house on the right PM Jane Jordan, 2315 Gunar Drive, San Jose At her new home, Jane had the front lawn removed to make room for the potted iris that she brought with her from her previous home. The back yard has roses that came with the house and a few iris in the ground and lots of potted plants. Driving Directions from Chad's Return back down Garden Hill Drive the way you came, taking the first left to stay on Garden Hill Dr. Turn right at Lark and left on Los Gatos Boulevard. Continue north on Bascom to Curtner. Turn right on Curtner. Gunar is the third left after Union. Proceed 2½ blocks on Gunar. Jane's house is on the left.
9 CBRIS-Apr 2014 Page 9 of 10 Spring Show Rule There is one rule for the Artistic Division that was not included in time for the show program. Only the show chair OR the person who entered the design is allowed to move or touch their own design. If the designer is not available, then the Artistic Show Chair may move or touch the design, but only for purposes of creating space on the table. No one, other than the designer and then the Show Chair is allowed to touch or move anyone else s design. This rule was originally created in order to avoid altering someone else s design when creating more space on the design table. It also cuts down on the potential for accidental damage to containers, etc. So if you are at the show and you need more room, the first thing to do is to open the entry tag, look at the name and then go grab the person who entered it. Be sure to return the card to its original location. If you cannot locate that person, please inform the Show Chair and I will move the design while maintaining its original presentation. Thank you. Lisa Ayala, Artistic Show Chair WANTED!!! We need some dollies (flat level push carts) for the show to help move entries back and forth - especially for the Artistic Division to make the walk not so challenging. If you have a dolly that we could use for the show, can you please let me or Carol know asap? If you know of someone else who would be willing to let us borrow the dolly for the show that would be great! Lisa Ayala, Artistic Show Chair Enjoy April Wow, there are some mighty strange holidays in April! Check out this website: Jane J might like the 8 th while Mary will certainly enjoy the 23rd. We should all check out the 29 th. By the way I am skipping the 6 th!
