1 March 2018 Vol. 60 Issue 7 Meeting Place First Baptist Church Daves Avenue Los Gatos, CA Next Meeting Friday, March 2, :30 P. M. Doors open 7:00 P. M. Dues Sep 1, Aug 31, 2018 Adults - $15.00 Contact Information Jane Jordan, President janeirisjordan@gmail.com CBRIS Region 14 American Iris Society March Meeting Mark your calendars for Friday, March 2, at 7:30 pm for our meeting on Flower Arranging with guest speaker, Aileen Lau. There are only two meetings remaining before our spring show, Irises on Parade, at Westgate Mall on April This month we will focus on the Artistic Division (schedule included in this newsletter). Showchair, Mikey Lango, has chosen six parade themes for you to choose from. For the novice designer, we have March In and the type of arrangement is your choice. Next is Grandstand, open to all to create a mass arrangement. The third division is Frame-up. Incorporate a frame smaller than 14x14x14 to make a mini arrangement. Showboat entries will be a linear design vertical, horizontal, curved or slanting. Attention, Gentlemen! We have a category just for you Promenade. Go for it! For our beginning designers under age 19, we have Color Guard and the design is their choice. I met our presenter, Aileen Lau, through our member Alice Gary, at last years spring show. Aileen is an avid flower designer and has been the coordinator of the Campbell Flower Arranging Club since She guides members to improve their skills and sends out YouTube videos to assist them. She finds flower arranging to be relaxing and therapeutic. She finds it stimulates one s mind and helps find tranquility within. Flower arranging not only brings joy to the arranger and the end result also brings joy to others. All photos on this page are Aileen s designs. Please plan on attending this Friday s meeting to learn about the world of flower arranging and sign up for the Artistic Division of the spring show. Carol Dahout, Show Chair

2 Page 2 of 19 CBRIS-Mar 2018 Jane's Gems March 2018 February was the month to fertilize your iris. An easy date to remember for iris fertilizing is Valentine's Day. Several people including myself went to Orchard Supply to buy our favorite fertilizer, Lilly Miller All Purpose Planting and Growing Food We were disappointed to find that OSH doesn't carry it anymore. But never fear, Amazon.com to the rescue. You can buy it online and shipping is free if you are a prime member. 10/dp/B000OV81OM/ref=sr_1_fkmr1_2_m?ie=UTF8&qid= &sr=8-2- fkmr1&keywords=lily%2bmiller%2bfertilizer%2b &th=1 The weather is playing tricks on us. After some balmy spring weather we were hit by a cold snap. There were abundant freeze alerts and the night time temperature dropped to 29 degrees at my house. I had several bloom stalks that hadn't opened yet, so I tried Riley Probst's method of socking the blooms to protect them from the freeze. See photo. Luckily the buds still look happy. Here's hoping that the rain that the weather man is promising will actually materialize. 5 Page 4 of 19 February 2018 CBRIS Meeting Minutes We didn't know what to do with ourselves! Instead of stealthily sneaking refreshments off the table before the meeting break, refreshments were served and meant to be eaten first at this meeting! We were dazed, doubting and disoriented. But well fed. Jane gaveled us to attention over the munching, and could be heard on the microphone! Carol took over the next part of the meeting. Name that show! April 21 and 22 will be our iris show at Westgate. Eighteen names were proposed and after heavy voting the winner is: Irises on Parade Carol distributed handouts illustrating the various types of Iris and their color patterns. English Box Carol demonstrated the English Box, a black box in which only the iris flowers show and which generally hold six flowers. The box is judged as a whole. The overall effect should be pleasing. All flowers must be the same type all TBs, all MTBs, all selfs, all plicatas, etc. Shades of a color, such as light to dark lavender, work. The flowers should not touch the box. The flowers should be uniform in size. You should be the grower. The flower forms should be as similar to each other as possible. Once the iris are placed, you create a 3x5 card listing the name of each iris and its position in the box. English Boxes can't get Best in Show, but can receive blue ribbons and Best of Section. The club has three English Boxes and Carol asked for people to sign up as exhibitors. The public loves English Boxes (from Riley) since they can see the blooms close up. Business Meeting Jane opened the business meeting after granting us a stretch break. Thanks to those who brought the plentiful refreshments and many Happy Birthdays. Yamagami's has declined to host our potted iris sale so we need to find another venue. The rhizome sale there is confirmed for August 4. Sign up to help with publicity and send venue suggestions to the board. Our July 15 picnic will be in Ortega Park. A vote was taken on whether or not members liked having refreshments first and it came out about 50/50. Eating first will be tried again. Door prize drawing held. Respectfully submitted, Lynn Stuart, Secretary
