Anger over Army plans to cut soldiers welfare links by scrapping Regimental Headquarters Some of you may have read the following article which was published in the Sunday Express on 23 Jul 17: PLANS to scrap Army regimental headquarters, which currently provide vital support in soldier welfare and recruiting, have caused outrage. Championed by head of the Army General Nick Carter as part of a cost-cutting drive, the move would cut 200 jobs and let the Army sell real estate. Last night, as sources suggested the end-game may see one super HQ in Andover, Hampshire, critics warned that the move to a call centre could jeopardise important welfare links for soldiers, and sever regional ties at a period when morale in the Army is already low. Another senior critic warned the move heralds the end of Britain s regimental system. According to a high level briefing, the proposals would begin with regiments which currently form the King s Division and Queen s Division. This would affect The Royal Anglians, the Princess of Wales s Royal Regiment and the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, as well as the Mercians, Yorkshire Regiment and Duke of Lancaster s. The Scots, Royal Welsh Regiment and Royal Irish would also be involved. MoD sources confirmed that the move would affect non-infantry units as well, but insisted it would not harm regimental identities. The demise of regimental and divisional headquarters may save around 200 jobs and a number of buildings across the country will be closed, said a senior source last night. RHQ s comments on the article are: The Regimental Headquarters structures are currently being reviewed as part of a wider study. The Review will affect the numbers of civil servants employed across Defence and within the Regimental and Corps HQs. RHQ RRF, HM Tower of London, EC3N 4AB v v 2

The Review is looking at a number of options. The one in the Express piece would be described as the most radical. The RHQ structure and outputs will change in one form or another and in the future we will have fewer staff to support the Regiment. We will keep you updated on the Review findings as and when we receive them. We look to your continued Regimental support to maintain and sustain the Regiment. More Senior Fusilier Promotions The Colonel of the Regiment and the Regiment congratulate the following on their selection for promotion to Brigadier in the latest No 2 Board list published on 29 June Colonel J Swift OBE to be Brigadier and appointed as Commander 38 th (Irish) Brigade wef August 2017 Colonel M R Butterwick CBE to be Brigadier and appointed as Commander Initial Training Group wef September Colonel M A J M Overton TD VR (late LONDON Regt) to be Brigadier and appointed as Deputy Commandant Reserves, Royal Military Academy Sandhurst wef October 2017 It is many, many years since the Regiment has had so many serving senior officers. Senior Ex-Fusilier Appointment Paul Lincoln, served as Short Service officer with 2nd Fusiliers in the mid-1990s 96/97 and subsequently with C Coy (City of London Regiment) at Balham. We are pleased to announce that Paul has been appointed as the new Director-General of Border Force. He is is currently Director-General of the Home Office s Crime, Policing and Fire Group (CPFG) and will take up his new role in the autumn. This is a 3* equivalent post. 4 Many congratulations from the Fusilier family. Andy Barlow GM for UK s 2018 Winter Paralympics Team Ex-Fusilier Andy Barlow GM has been picked for the UK s Winter Paralympics Team, competing in South Korea in Andy (on the left) with fellow medal winners Andy is an excellent example of what Fusiliers can achieve, despite a traumatic injury. Here is his report of the Pyeongchang Paralympic GB Games Workshop, held earlier this year to prepare the team. We arrived at Lilleshall National Sports Centre and Penny Briscoe the chef de mission gave a great opening speech and the itinerary for the two days. The objective was to get to know the BPA (British Paralympic Association) staff and to get an insight into the Games, in order to be best prepared for Pyeongchang. This was the first time all staff and athletes from all five disciples of snow-sports were in the same room together. There were talks on travel, hygiene and the history of the games, coupled with team building my team won overall, taking the gold medals. The day ended with an inspiring and inspirational talk by Paralympian Gold medalist Emma Wiggs. Day Two was a early start, straight into learning Korean. I can now say Hello fluently anneonghaseyo. The second activity was Korean dancing, followed by media training with a BBC journalist and a look at social media. The main focus was to sell ourselves RHQ RRF, HM Tower of London, EC3N 4AB v v 4

and our sports, whilst avoiding confrontational posts and ignoring trolls. The next brief was the most serious: antidoping and a huge eye opener. Anything bought, even over the counter paracetamol needs to be checked on the official websites where a code will be given to prove it s safe to use. There was a quiz on doping tests and when and where we can be summoned for a test. The day finished with a commercial brief regarding sponsors and kit to be worn throughout the Games. To summarise, I left the course scoring myself 7/10, as mentally prepared to thrive and survive at the Games. The remaining 3/10 can only come from training and working hard on the snow. I have 254 days to to turn my 7/10 to a full 10/10. The staff from the BPA delivered an exceptional course and I throughly enjoyed every minute The past always catches up... From the right, Col J Butterfill MC late RRF, Lt Col TPD Morris R ANGLIAN and Maj DR Wilson RRF at the Petersburg National Battlefield in Virginia, USA, on an impromptu American Civil War battlefield tour. 6 The three officers were deployed with HQ 3 (UK) Div and CSTTG on Ex WARFIGHTER 17/5, a super-cast type exercise involving three divisional HQs, which took place in Fort Bragg in North Carolina in June. Back in 1998 all three served together in Y Company 1 st Fusiliers. Lt Col Morris was OC 7 Pl, Col Butterfill was OC 8 Pl, and Maj Wilson was OC 9 Pl. And here you can see them after a dinner night in Under the Reputation Protection Act, the identity of the fourth character has been obscured, as it is not flattering. They have certainly grown older but any wiser? Award of the Regimental Merit Medal to ex WO2 Bill Gardener Bill Gardener of the City of London Branch of the Fusilier Association was presented with the Regimental Merit Medal on 4 Bill Gardener receives his medal from Vice Admiral Peter Wilkinson CB, CVO June, at the Annual Parade of the Federation of London Old Comrades Associations in London. This was entirely appropriate as Bill has been the Fusilier coordinator for the parade for the last 25 years. The award represents formal recognition for the many years of dedicated service that Bill has given to the Fusiliers. Bill began his military career in the Royal Corps of Signals in 1952 and saw service in Korea and Malaya. RHQ RRF, HM Tower of London, EC3N 4AB v v 6

After leaving the regular army he joined the 8 th Battalion Royal Fusiliers at Balham. His career with the TA Fusiliers was to last until 1977, when he retired from C Company as WO2 (CSM). Bill served in various roles, including the Tower Company at RHQ, Assault Pioneers, MT, and Anti-Tank Pl. Bill has always been a very active Branch committee member, and was a visible presence to the entrance to Downing Street during the campaign to save 2 nd Fusiliers. He has been a proud standard bearer for several years, and performed this duty on the Federation Parade. Bill s wife Chris is also very much a part of the Fusilier family, attending all the reunions, functions and gatherings. Together they make a great team, and this award is also a recognition of her wonderful support for Bill and the Regiment Flying into the Lancashire Landings After three years poor weather prevented it happening, 2017 saw pilots from across the country fly into the Lancashire Landing to support the charity Fallen Fusiliers If you don t know what this is about, have a look at this YouTube clip from Maj Chester Potts. Restoration of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment Antelope The Sutton Mandeville Heritage Trust (SMHT) project to restore the Antelope, the oldest of the WW1 regimental badges in the Fovant Valley of South Wiltshire, has won an 88,000 Heritage Lottery Fund grant towards the restoration. RHQ RRF, HM Tower of London, EC3N 4AB v v 7

The men of the 13 th Battalion The Royal Warwickshire Regiment, who were training in the valley in 1916, first had the idea of honouring the Regiment by carving their capbadge in the turf of the chalk hillside. This was the first of several WW1 badges preserved on the chalk downland. The Antelope was last restored by the Fusiliers of 2 nd The oldest known photo of the Antelope Fusiliers in 1988 and is now a Scheduled Ancient Monument. The SMHT aims to raise the balance of 30,000 to restore both the Antelope and the Grenade of the 7 th Battalion The London Regiment, (the Shiny 7 th ) and to provide for the long-term maintenance of both badges. Work has started on the Antelope in recent weeks. The most effective way Fusiliers can help is to become a member of the Trust. Visit or info@sutton-down-badges.com for details. Sgt Richards on Ex FREE FALL in Spain Sgt Richards, a Fusilier member of the West Midlands Army Training Unit, took part in a sky diving trip in Spain in June Here is his report: I read about the sky diving trip in Part One Orders and promptly booked on for the two weeks in Seville, Spain. Impulsive or mad you decide. The first day was at the Netheravon Parachute Centre where we did all the groundwork needed. It was a long day for all eight of us, starting at first light and finishing at last light. We returned to Pirbright with all our parachuting kit and equipment which tested our packing skills for the journey out. RHQ RRF, HM Tower of London, EC3N 4AB v v 8

Next day was a 0200 start to travel to Spain. We booked into our apartments and then drove to the dropzone for our first look. The first jump was the following day. All our jumps, except two, were from 15,000 ft. The first four had two instructors holding on to us as we leapt out reaching 120 mph. On the way down, we had a number of tasks to do before pulling our ripcord at 6,000 ft and then controlling our parachute to a safe landing. The next four jumps were with a single instructor with more tasks like barrel rolls, turns and tracking. And we were now opening our chutes at 4,000 ft and landing much nearer the drop zone. The second week, we jumped solo, ten times at 15,000 ft and 4,000 ft and could exit any way we liked, the madder the better. With all 18 jumps under our belts it was time to leave for home. So, was I mad? Yes I would have been mad to miss an adventure like this. Being taken out of your comfort zone and working your way back to being comfortable, falling at 120 mph and landing under a silk cover. Sgt Richards is really grateful for the financial contribution from the Hatzer Adventure Training Fund, administered by RHQ London Fusiliers ACF Adult Instructors Cocktail Party Colonel Jim Taylor, Deputy Colonel London hosted a June cocktail party for the Fusilier Greater London ACF Adult instructors. There was an excellent turnout with over 60 guests attending. RHQ RRF, HM Tower of London, EC3N 4AB v v 9

The aim of the event was to gather our Fusiliers in a social environment at their Regimental Mess within HM Tower of London. Colonel Taylor spoke to the group stressing how important the ACF is to the Fusiliers in London. In many cases they are the only visible Fusilier presence. He thanked them for their commitment and hard work. It was also an opportunity to introduce some of those who willingly support the ACF, especially The Worshipful Company of Cordwainers. The Master, Mr Jeremy Blanford, was particularly keen to speak to the Fusiliers, as his Company administer the Harben Armoury Trust which offers financial assistance to the London Fusilier ACF detachments. SE London Fusilier ACF Adult Instructors on the steps of RHQ (we think it s after the cocktails...) Whilst at the event, guests looked round the Regimental Museum to enhance their Regimental knowledge and identity. One thing that was very clear was how proud all these volunteers are to wear the Hackle. We as a London Area HQ are very proud that they represent the Fusiliers across London and give up so much time and personal resources improving the lives of our Fusilier cadets. 11 Centenary Commemoration of WW1 soldiers lost in action on the Antwerp coast On the 10th July the Area Secretary London and the Regimental Adjutant represented the Regiment in Nieuwpoort, Belgium at Capt Ben a centenary Everson at commemoration event. the There was a splendid Nieuwpoort service remembering Memorial, soldiers from across the showing Commonwealth, held at the some of Commonwealth Wargraves the names Commission Memorial in of lost the town. On this Memorial Fusiliers are the names of over 600 soldiers and officers who have no known graves. Over 60 of these were from our antecedent Fusilier Regiments. Warwick ACF is getting ready for Annual Camp July is a quiet month with final preparations for Annual camp at Warcop at the end of the month. Nevertheless, Cadets and adults from the Leamington Spa Detachment still found the time to take part in Antelope Day at St John s House in support of the Regimental Museum. Lt Col Richard Gale, the Deputy Commandant, was seen reminiscing with the Cadets about his days in 5RRF when he was OC Anti Tank Pl with six of these MOBATs. We are amazed he still has his hearing... RHQ RRF, HM Tower of London, EC3N 4AB v v 11

Although busy preparing for Annual Camp, one of the County s CFAVs still managed to find this old hackle used by a robin to line its nest. The QM is investigating whether it was signed out properly. Northumbria ACF prepares for a busy summer With the onset of summer, Northumbria ACF cadets and the Cassino Band, have been out and about in earnest. Highlights of our Cadet in the Community programme have included: the North of England Children s Cancer Run, the Newcastle Military Show, Morpeth s Picnic in the Park and the Northumberland County Show. It s an opportunity to showcase what a fantastic organisation the Army Cadet Force is, but most importantly, it also gets young people fully engaged with their local communities. Cadet Sgt Joe Cain from Battle Hill Detachment was interviewed by BFBS Radio at the Newcastle Military Show and talked about the marvellous opportunities open to everyone in the cadet movement. RHQ RRF, HM Tower of London, EC3N 4AB v v 12

Several cadets are now heading overseas on the ACFA sponsored exchange programmes. Cadet Sgt Matthew Bell (Monkseaton Detachment) is now on a sixweeks trip of a lifetime to Ottawa, Canada. A keen shot, he is one of only 12 cadets from across the UK picked to attend the Cadet Leadership and Marksmanship Course. Everyone is now preparing for the NACF Annual Camp at Warcop. More on that in September s Newsletter. Warwick & Leamington Branches annual Lunch Warwick and Leamington Branches held their annual Luncheon at Alderson House, Warwick in late June. It was clearly enjoyable, judging by these photos. Des Mawby, Secretary to Warwick Branch, joined the Royal Warwickshire Regiment as a boy soldier in 1947; Mr Fred Davies, former WO2, served in Korea; and Tony Hoffman, of the Royal Warwickshire Fusiliers, served when they were based in Hong Kong Col Bob Carruthers and Sandy Carruthers share a joke with Mr Ken Mace and Lt Col Ken Caley. 14 1 August 2017 Ex-Sergeant Wally Stevens, who served with the Royal Warwickshire Regiment in the Near East including Egypt clearly having a good time at the Lunch Out and About At the City of Coventry Armed Forces Day Parade, the Fusiliers were represented by Maj John Turquand, Capt John Lam (seen here enjoying his civic engagement duties) and the usual strong contingent of Cadets. The Fusiliers Association (Lancashire) once again filled the streets of Blackpool over the Veterans Weekend. The Lancashire Band played a concert in St John s Square on the Saturday afternoon and gave a free concert at Norbreck Castle that evening. RHQ RRF, HM Tower of London, EC3N 4AB v v 14

On the Sunday, over 100 Fusiliers paraded, with the Assault Pioneers stationed on the four corners of the Cenotaph for the Veterans Service. The 2017 Fighting Fifth Golf Competition took place at Morpeth Golf Club on Saturday 1 st July in excellent weather. John Taylor, ex 1RRF, won the overall competition with 42 points as well as the Longest Drive Hip Flask. His handicap will be severely cut for next year. Tommy Crook won the Nearest the Pin Hip Flask and all players enjoyed an excellent Northumbrian Supper. Jason King, ex 3 rd Fusiliers, is going for a World Record. Using his RRF themed race bike, Jason will be attempting a new world record for the fastest kilometre wheelie on August on the Elvington Airfield. He s then competing in the MANX GP which he has won for the past 3 years. For all you petrol heads, the bike is a chargecooled Turbo GSXR 1000 and is pushing out 446hp at the wheel. It was built for Jason by Holeshot Racing, based in Northern Ireland. Below are two links to Jason and team mate Gary Rothwell completing the kilometre wheelie in competition. 19 Coventry CV6 3HL DRAGON - Awareness of Veteran Mental Health Issues RHQ has been approached by Mr Bob Jeffrey, who is a local North Tyneside playwright. Bob has written and is producing a play called Dragon. The play s title comes from the sign that A Company Group, 2 nd Fusiliers put up at Now Zad in 2006: Welcome to the Dragon s Lair, Home of Fire Support Group Second Fusiliers. The play is a fictitious drama about a veteran struggling to adjust to civilian life because of mental health issues caused by the military experiences of combat.
