Officer Reports From the President Who s your parent(s)? Most folks know who their biological parent(s) are, but do you know who CCI s parent is? The one who sets the rules and tells us what our club can and can t do? The answer is the National Council of Corvette Clubs commonly referred to as N triple C for short. For those of you not familiar with NCCC, I m going to give you a short lesson NCCC 101, Part I. In a nutshell, the object of NCCC is to promote interest in Corvette ownership and operation. It is comprised of 16 groups that are referred to as Regions. CCI is a member of the West Region that includes Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, North Dakota and South Dakota. That is why your NCCC membership number begins with WR. Some regions are very small in total member numbers Carolina is the smallest region with 236 members, and others are quite large Midwest is the largest with 2,543 members. Reorganization of the Regions has been a talking point at the national level for several years. One of the reasons it is talked about is due to the fact that there are now individual clubs around the country with more individual club members than there are total members in some entire regions. Whoever gets to tackle that one, good luck! NCCC has 16 officer positions, some elected and others appointed, with all positions being volunteer. Some positions have term limits and some do not, but all require a considerable amount of time and effort from each volunteer. CCI has a local club member occupying one of the elected positions Denny Luther is the Director of Public Relations. Any NCCC member can run for an NCCC office, so here s your chance to throw your hat in the ring!! The NCCC officer positions constitute what is referred to as the Executive Board (E Board for short). The E Board generally meets five times a year, which includes an annual meeting at the National Convention. The meeting dates and location are determined in advance by a vote of the Governors. At these pre-determined meetings, which are currently held in St Louis, the E Board has meetings, the Regional officers have meetings, some Regions have regional meetings 4 and the Governors have meetings. These weekends are commonly called Governor meeting weekends. Sheila Wyman, as Governor of our club, attends these meetings and relays back to us what is happening at the national and regional levels. NCCC has Bylaws, Standing Rules, Rule Books, Forms, Logos, Insurance, and much more. Feel free to check out the NCCC website, and read away. Linda Hommer, President Governor s Message I don t want to load you up with too much information in one sitting, so am going to call it quits for this session. But, be warned, there may be more mini-sessions to follow. I was in attendance at the West Region Quarterly meeting on February 24 th, where several issues were discussed. Kathy Brisbois from the Cornhusker Corvette Club is the new West Region webmaster. Let her know if you know of anything that needs changed or updated. Regional Executive Larry Beebe from Cedar Rapids Corvette Club submitted his resignation and nominated Gary Foster from Corvette Club of Iowa as his replacement. This was voted on and passed so effective immediately, Gary will be the RE. There was also discussion on how, as a region, we can support the West Region Scholarship Fund. Other than donations from clubs, most of the income is generated through the permanent number program. A change to the operating rules was proposed as follows: numbers will be assigned by registration from the WR permanent number list and available numbers. WR members requesting numbers other than those assigned by registration will be charged $3 for the weekend. The proceeds from this will go to the WR Scholarship fund as do the proceeds from the permanent numbers. Voted on

and passed, this will begin in What this means is when you attend an event and you have not purchased a permanent number for the season and you request a special number for the weekend, you will be charged $3.00 for the weekend. However, if you use the number assigned by the people at registration you will not be charged any additional fee. This information will be included on the event flyer and also on the 2019 permanent number request form. WR clubs are beginning to input their sanctions and schedules for this year. These are posted on the WR website so start planning your summer activities. Following the West Region meeting, I attended the NCCC Governor s meeting. First order of business was that our current membership stands at 17,389 members. As with anything that is new, the electronic membership renewals did not go as well as expected. There were several problems ranging from members not receiving their renewal notification to members who couldn t open the received or not being able to print the paper copy of their card. Therefore, it was decided that new 2018 plastic membership cards, like you received in the past, will be issued. These will be mailed out within the next few weeks. Be looking for your real membership card in the mail. The Business Manager reported that a contract has been signed to continue holding the Governor s meetings in St. Louis through The convention for 2018 will be held in New Orleans and there are currently 358 members registered. Still time to register if you are interested in attending. The 2019 convention will be held in Denver, Colorado. More information will be forthcoming. Director of Public Relations reported that a new video is being developed for display at the National Corvette Museum. He also wanted to remind all members of the Family Helping Family database. He would appreciate feedback from anyone who has had an experience using this database. Director of Publications reported that articles for the next Blue Bars issue are due to her by March 7 th. The NCCC Scholarship application is now online. This scholarship may be awarded to children or grandchildren of a current NCCC member. The application is now automated and may be completed and submitted online. The deadline for the NCCC scholarship is June 1 st. We also have a West Region scholarship for children or grandchildren of current members of the WR. The most convenient way to apply is to just make a copy of the NCCC scholarship application and submit it to RE Gary Foster. The deadline for the WR scholarship is July 1 st. They may apply for both scholarships but if they are awarded a national scholarship, they are no longer eligible for the WR scholarship that year. However, they can apply the following year for a WR scholarship. Last but not least, if you are interested in becoming more involved in NCCC, the following officer positions are up for election in 2019: President, Vice President of Membership, Parliamentarian and Director of Public Relations. If you are interested in any of these positions, you can go to the website and find out more information. Spring can t come soon enough!! Sheila Wyman, Governor Meeting Minutes Board Meeting, February 6, 2017 Pres. Linda Hommer called the meeting to 6:15. Like the airlines, our room was overbooked so we had to put the hustle on the meeting. Secretary: howdy, I had nothing to add so my January board meet mins were previewed 5 and a motion was made to approve by Steve H. and seconded by Linda. Treasurer: Nan is working to simplify the format on which we publish our statement. It was also brought up at this time that we need to our insurance. With some of our latest purchases if we suffered loss/damages we would be out of some serious cash due to being under insured. Nan will get some numbers together and we will move forward from there. This mostly pertains to the contents of the trailer. Those traffic cones are a hot commodity you know. Ha! Her money report can be viewed in the members only section by

utilizing the secret code. Motion to approve Nan s numbers was made by Sheila and seconded by Jim L. We are adjusting our charities to meet by-law requirements as follows: $250 NCCC scholarship; $500 West Region scholarship; $250 Adopt-a-Star; $500 Toys For Tots; $500 St Judes; $577 discretionary. This will be presented to the club for questions and the Feb club meeting. Vice Pres Kris H was absent so her lovely husband Steve covered for her. About 38 people had signed up for the Valentines Latin King. A few openings were still available. Our March social will be a trip to the Lucky Pig in Ogden. Sandy and I have been there and it s a great place to grab an excellent tenderloin sandwich. April is still in the works so stay tuned to Sportsmate for details. Governess: Sheila reminded the board that she will be attending the gov. the end of the month and with that comes some traveling $$. No problem, just go easy on the lobster dinners. Ha! large: Steve sez things are quiet right now so he was a happy camper. Editor: Dave H requested prompt filing of reports so he can make the required publishing deadline. We will be going back to our old pricing method for sponsorship ads in Sportsmate. Webmaster: Wayne W had nothing to report except that Cheryl was finally home and resting comfortably. Here s to wishing her a speedy recovery. Points: Wayne N proposed a new sign-up sheet format which we ll run by the superiors to make sure it meets code. Membership Director: Jay H presented a very polished packet to be given to new members upon joining up with us. Thanks Jay, a job well done. The Strawberry Patch in Ankeny will handle all of our embroidery requests with KSH Design Studio doing all other items. Competition Director: Nicole P is ready with awards to be given the Valentines dinner with Paul W as an assistant. Awards were approved by Sheila and Nan. New biz: the club has a very rich history with several trophies and awards. Unfortunately, these are currently being stored in a member s attic. We are seeking people, preferably businesses, that would be interested in displaying some CCI club hardware. Contact any board member with ideas you may have. Thank you. A review committee for by-laws will consist of Dave H, Jay H, and Linda told me I d be there too. More on that later. A shout out to Darren B who s recouping from shoulder surgery. Go easy my friend! Since we have a secret code for the members only section, we are contemplating having a secret handshake for getting into the club meetings. All suggestions can be shown to any board member. Please keep them very short and simple due to time and memory constraints. Thanks. Motion to adjourn by Sheila, Nan second, 7:45pm. Respectfully, Jim Lucas, Secretary General Meeting, February 20, 2017 This month we Smoky D s for some killer BBQ. (You ll soon notice that we re kind of partial to this place) Pretty good crowd considering the weather conditions. Pres. Hommer got things 6:40. We have a new returning member, Mike Golightly, proud owner of a 66 coupe. Welcome back Mike. Next up was yours truly Mr. Secretary. I m starting to detect a pattern here. Anyway, I had no additional input at this time so a motion was made by Paul W to approve the last general meeting minutes as published in Sportsmate. Seconded by Kris H. Treas. Nan B. sez no this time, so a motion was made to accept her report with Carrol M giving the nod and Kris H. seconding. VP. Kris H reported that there were 34 people in the Valentines Day dinner the Latin King Restaurant. It was a cozy setting. She also reminded us of upcoming events on March 11 th Wild Wades Swap the fairgrounds; March 24 th Lucky Pig tenderloin run; April club Bob Brown; April 21 st highway cleanup; Aug 24 th Vettes on the River. Details for these happenings can be found in Sportsmate. Kris also showed some tee shirt samples of club attire. Also available are hats and visors. All items are $20 each. Get with her or Steve to get your order going. Gov. Sheila is prepping for her first Governors meeting next weekend. She has put together a by-laws review committee that will meet in April. We changed event dates with the Cornhusker the end of Sept. to help them out due to a scheduling snafu. Our gig will be a one-day deal TBD. Stay tuned for further info. Gary Foster will be 6

replacing Larry Beebe as West Region RE. Larry s wife Kris is having some fairly serious health issues and we all wish them the best in this difficult time. Editor Dave H had this time so we then moved to Points. Wayne 2 also had nothing cause he was gone. But as I understand it points are up to date. Wayne, I think you and I need to have a lil chat ol buddy. MD Jay H was hoping to get some feedback on the new membership packets he distributed, unfortunately those who received the packet were not in attendance. We are currently 106 members strong. WM Wayne 1 had no report. Comp Director Nicole P handed out two awards Gary Foster for his past service as President and Wayne W for his Speed Racer antics last year. M@L Steve H reminded all that we ll be Smoky D s in March. Scott Mitchell won the 50/50 to the tune of $32. Pres. Linda had nothing to report so we moved to New Biz: Denny Luther reminded us of the fast approaching West Region banquet to be The Field Club in Omaha. They have a new one day format so check this out via computer. Tom Treska told us about a LeMans race the NCCC Museum. Karen Renfrow is the contact. At this time Linda put forth the 2018 charity budget with a breakdown of the moneys per rule requirements which goes as follows: $250 Don & Erna Hoskins NCCC scholarship; $500 West Region scholarship in memory of deceased members; $250 Adopt A Star; $500 Toys for Tots; $500 for St Judes Childrens Hospital; $577 for incidentals as we see the need. Motion was made to approve by Denny L and Gary F seconded. Nicole was having a parts swap meet the same day as highway cleanup and she has also purchased a 1945 firetruck. Is this Plan D and will it pass tech at the track? Jay H has purchased a new retirement ride: a C1 drag car! This oughta be interesting? The secret handshake was dropped due to what was that again? Motion to 7:45 by Ken W. & Kris H. Respectfully, Jim Lucas, Secretary CCI Odds and Ends General Meeting Details Please make plans to attend the March general meeting at Smokey D s. Here are the full details: Smokey D s BBQ 5055 NW 2 nd St Des Moines Located just north of I-35/80 on the east side of NW 2 nd, next to Big Barn Harley-Davidson. We ll follow the usual schedule for the evening: 6:00pm 7:00pm See you on the 20 th! Tuesday, April 17 th. Don t forget that our April general meeting will take place at Bob Brown Chevrolet. Pizza will be delivered by The Tavern. Each of us will pay $5 for the pizza and bring our own drinks. Member News New Members. Look to this space for the most recent additions to the CCI family. We always look forward to meeting new members and in February we welcomed back Mike & Rhonda Golightly of Urbandale who return to CCI after a brief absence. Mike has now finished a complete restoration of their blue 1966 coupe. Welcome back to CCI! 7

What About Old Members? We don t often get the chance to explore the club s past, let alone its very beginnings. CCI Webmaster Wayne Weidmann recently received the 1963 photo below from Brian Hoskins, Grandson of Don & Erna Hoskins. You often hear their names but did you know that Don was one of CCI s and NCCC s founding members? As Editor, I have seen many pictures of him over the years and he is honestly the only one in this photo who I am absolutely certain of he is the older gentleman slightly right of center among this group of mostly 30 somethings and younger. I ll also go out on a limb with a guess that Des Moines dentist, Dr. Tom Raymond, appears right of Don in a lab coat and glasses. Note that he is the only one in the photo not wearing a white shirt and skinny tie! Other than that, I have no idea I suppose we ll have to put Arda Mathern to work on it! Birthdays. Wishing a Happy Birthday to the following members with March birthdates: Tom Rodd 3/11 Sue Biley 3/17 Alan Heggen 3/17 Jerry Ruggle 3/20 Scott Pritchard 3/21 Laurie McCracken 3/24 Shannon Ford 3/29 Arda Mathern 3/29 8 CCI Apparel. Kris & Steve Howard s KSH Design Studio is offering apparel for the Club. If you re interested, just print their order form on Pages 11 & 12 or use this link to the form: XojjnVW3ti4RGpvk-tZhnCl5jQSvG p-juzn3vicaco/edit?usp=sharing Kris has also added two new designs for the back of your t-shirt. They re top left on the next page:

The Strawberry Patch in Ankeny will handle all of our embroidery requests. Contact Jeff there at for help. Chopper Swap Meet. Here s something different if the club s other activities on April 21 st aren t on your agenda. Nichole Parnell invites you to stop by her new place and have a look around. Details below. Events Here s a wrap-up of recently held events along with a description of events on the horizon: Valentine s Day Dinner. February 13 th saw another successful Valentine s Day event in this long-running series. Tursi s Latin King Restaurant hosted us this year with 34 people in attendance. In addition to dinner, CCI s annual awards were presented as well congrats to the winners! The room was cozy, food was fantastic and all had a great time. 9

Wild Wade s Swap Meet. Wild Wade s made its annual stop at the Varied Industries Building on the Iowa State Fairgrounds Sunday, March 11 th. It s a great time to do a little bench racing and we had steady traffic with lots of questions as we promoted the club to this car savvy crowd.
