Officer Reports From the President It s already September as 2017 continues to fly by. Our weather continues to remain mild and we still have some time before we have to think about putting away our cars for the winter. There are still some events this month of interest to CCI members, including the booth at the Des Moines Concours d Elegance in downtown Des Moines on September 10 th, the Eddyville Raceway autocross on September 16 th, and the CCI Corvette display at the Sherman Hill 40 th Anniversary Walking Tour of Homes on September 24 th. I hope you can attend some of these events while the pleasant fall weather continues. You may have heard that I am running for the position of National Council of Corvette Clubs (NCCC) Sgt. at Arms. During the CCI event at Iowa Speedway over the Memorial Day weekend, I was asked to run for this spot on the National Board. Sgt. at Arms is a post I have held previously and, frankly, I was flattered to be asked to run for it again. At the September Governor s Meeting in St. Louis, candidates for office were given the opportunity to give a nomination speech to those assembled for the meeting. I was unable to attend, so I wrote a short speech that Denny Luther was able to take to the meeting and have someone read. He also posted a few flyers for me promoting my candidacy. Now I have to send information about myself to the webmaster for him to post. The election takes place in November. If elected, it will be my pleasure to represent you on the National Board. Wish me luck! Sometimes we forget that CCI is part of a bigger organization. NCCC is a national organization that helps to dictate how member clubs, such as CCI, operate. The purpose of NCCC was (and still is) to promote interest in Corvette ownership and operation, to publish information on the use and operation of the Corvette, and to establish an organized effort to encourage others to participate in the enjoyment connected with the use and ownership of the Corvette America s sports car. When we host an event, we are insured through a policy 4 provided by NCCC. Our sanctioned events are operated according to NCCC rules. Additionally, our participation in NCCC provides us with the opportunity to attend events both in and out of our region, attend an annual convention and meet other people across the country who have similar interests to ours. If you haven t done so recently, check out the NCCC website at Have you been following progress on the 2018 and 2019 Corvettes? From information I ve seen, it appears as though the mid-engine C8 Zora is likely to be introduced at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show and sold together with the C7 Corvette as 2019 models. I expected the new mid-engine cars to be priced like other supercars, well into the six-figures. However, I have seen estimates that these cars could start somewhere between $65,000-$100,000, while the new C7 ZR1 (with more than 700 horsepower) will start around $105,000. There are a lot of recent articles online of the C7 ZR1, including spy photos showing the cars being tested with very little camouflaging. The tremendous level of performance and exciting new technology these cars will introduce make this a thrilling time to be a Corvette enthusiast. I still find it amazing that we can buy factory street performance cars today that outperform race cars of the 70s and 80s. Here are two such cars from online spy photos in Car and Driver. This car is believed to be the 2018/2019 C7 Corvette ZR1 Spy photo from this summer of what is believed to be the 2019 C8 mid-engine Corvette

Well, that s all the space I have, so I hope to see you all at the September meeting at Smoky D s on September 19 th. Until then Save the Wave. Gary Foster, President Governor s Message Thanks to everyone who helped make our 2017 Ankeny Airport event a big success. We had wonderful participation from competitors, workers and spectators alike. This continues to rank as one of the best attended West Region events every year. The weather was fantastic, we had participants from several states and great support from the Des Moines car community with over 15 non-corvettes racing with us. Of course, without the support of the Ankeny governing board s authorization we would not be able to enjoy this perfect venue so a big thank you goes out to the airport board. And I don t want to forget the support we get from the Iowa Aviation Heritage Museum and their delicious food offerings. The combination of all this support makes this a special weekend for CCI! I will be attending the West Region and NCCC Governor s meeting in St. Louis on September 9 th and 10 th. Officer nominations will be made for the national board and a presentation for the Denver 2019 NCCC Convention. On September 16 th we will be hosting a one-day 7 event autocross at Eddyville Raceway. For those of you who have wanted to enter an autocross, this is the place and time. Since it is only one day and on a small course, it will be an excellent opportunity to give it a try. This is a fresh location for CCI thanks to our Competition Director, Nichole Parnell. Mark your calendar and come out to join the fun! Another new activity is scheduled for September 24 th. It is for the Hoyt Sherman Display and Walking Tour. We hope to have as many club members show up with their Corvettes to display in the parking lot to help draw people to this event to tour the historic Sherman Hill area. It is also a powerful opportunity for us to promote the club to the Des Moines community. Hope to see you all on September 19 th at Smokey D s for our regular meeting. Denny Luther, Governor Meeting Minutes Board Meeting, August 1, 2017 The August Board meeting was held at Mama Lacona s in Urbandale. President Gary Foster called the meeting to order at 6:55PM. Secretary s report: Dave Howard reviewed the July Board meeting minutes, noting approval of the previous month s Board minutes and Treasurer s report along with Judi Nikolish s review of social events. There were also reports from the Member at Large, Editor, Webmaster, Points Chair, Competition Director and Membership Director. The Board meeting minutes will be published in Sportsmate. Motion to approve by Denny Luther, seconded by Ken Wilson and passed. Treasurer s report: Ken said Ankeny registrations were most of July s receipts which totaled over $1,900. Expenditures of about $1,300 included payment for Newton t-shirts and expenses related to our Chariton event in June. The net result was an increase of just over $600 in the balance. Ken s full report will be posted in Members Only on the website. Motion to approve by Judi, seconded by Kris Howard and passed. President s report: Gary said he is excited for the events coming up in Ankeny and Eddyville. Paul plans to get the race trailer moved around to both venues when the time comes. VP report: Judi said there are a few cars going up to Perry this Friday evening, August 5 th for a car show but this isn t an official club social. She mentioned that Christine Ruggle is working on 5

a women s tea in October but this will also not be an official social. Judi reported that 14 members will be going to Vettes on the River in Le Claire on August 26 th. They are gathering at Smokey D s the previous afternoon for the drive over. Governor s report: Denny said he has ordered the porta-potties for Ankeny and mentioned a promotional flyer for the event which was done by the Aviation Museum. He also said the competition flyer for Eddyville is now available and thanked Nichole for the excellent work she did on that. Member at Large: Kris said that the next general meeting is at Karl Chevrolet and the September and October general meetings will be at Smokey D s. She will order in pizza from The Leaning Tower for the Karl s meeting and we will have a $5/person charge. Several 2018 models will be on display for us there along with sales staff from the dealership to answer questions. Kris passed out koozies with the CCI logo and web address on them and there was discussion about design options for these as well as for t-shirts. Editor: Dave asked if anyone saw the recent obit for Ted Boheman, a onetime CCI member and frequent attendee at Bennigan s on Wednesdays. Webmaster: Wayne W. asked how to respond to the guy that requested space at Ankeny to demonstrate t- shirt airbrush art. We decided we would rather not do that but maybe could see if he wants to attend a club meeting. Points Chair: Wayne N. reported that all points are up to date. Competition Director: Nichole said that preparations are underway for the Ankeny Airport event on August 12 th & 13 th and also for the Eddyville Raceway event September 16 th. Membership Director: Sheila had nothing to report. Old Business: Gary asked about dues renewal and the committee thought we are fine staying with the current dues structure. He also asked about officer nominations and that committee expects to be ready to offer a slate of candidates at the general meeting in two weeks. Ken sought advice on making a check out to the City of Chariton for use of the airport in June. After discussion, Ken made a motion to write it for $500, Denny seconded and the motion passed. Gary said he would touch base with Clayton to arrange for presenting it at a council meeting. New Business: Paul mentioned repairs needed on the race trailer but thought it could wait until after the competition season is over. That concluded business. Kris moved for adjournment at 8:15PM and Denny seconded. Respectfully, Dave Howard, Secretary General Meeting, August 15, 2017 The August general meeting was held at Karl Chevrolet and President Gary Foster called the meeting to order at 7:00PM. There were no new members or guests in attendance. Secretary s report: Dave Howard highlighted items from the July meeting minutes including approval of the previous month s minutes and Treasurer s report, Gary s report on activities of the dues review and nominating committees, Judi Nikolish s update of social events (in particular, Vettes on the River), Governor Denny Luther was not present, Kris Howard s report on upcoming meeting locations, plus reports from the Editor, Webmaster, Points, Competition and Membership. Minutes are published in Sportsmate. A motion to approve the minutes was made by Ken Wilson, seconded by Jim Lucas and the motion passed. Treasurer s report: Ken reviewed July Treasury activity which showed most of the receipts coming from Ankeny registrations. Most of the expenditures related to our Newton and Chariton events and the ending balance increased a little over $600. His full report is under Members Only on the club website. Larry Mark moved to approve the report, Kris Howard seconded and the motion passed. President s report: Gary had nothing to report. VP s report: Judi said that 8 Vettes and 16 people would make the road trip from Smokey D s BBQ to Vettes on the River in Le Claire. The group will leave at 1:30PM on Friday, August 25 th for the show on Saturday, the 26 th. The next social event will be the car display at the Sherman Hill Walking Tour on Sunday, 6

September 24 th. Judi is also planning a fall cruise along White Pole Road, probably in October. Governor s report: Denny commented about the very successful event in Ankeny that took place over the past weekend. Member-at-Large: Kris reported $105 in the 50/50 pot and the winner of $52 50 was Paul W. Kris said that our upcoming general meetings are at Smokey D s. The September Board meeting will be held at Old Chicago. Editor: Dave H. said we will find out how Sportsmate did in the NCCC Newsletter Contest when results are announced at next week s NCCC Convention. Webmaster: Wayne W. said that he has 3 Newton t-shirts left (one L, two XL). He also brought up that CCI has been invited to have a club display at the Des Moines Concours d Elegance on Sunday, September 10 th downtown. After discussion, it was the consensus to give it a go. We will be allowed two cars in our display and Mike Murray volunteered his 67 roadster. Wayne Nikolish then offered his 2017 convertible as the second car, making a point that the two Vettes are 50 years apart in age. All agreed. Points Chair: Wayne N. said that points up to date. Competition: Nichole reported that the Ankeny Airport event drew 59 drivers on Saturday and 48 on Sunday an excellent turnout. She then explained all the significant details for our oneday event at Eddyville Raceway Park on September 16 th. Membership: Sheila said we are now up to 127 on the membership roster as of July 1 st (the new list is posted to Members Only on the CCI website). There will not be any additional rosters created for 2017 since renewals take place from September forward. Old Business: the Dues Review Committee has recommended to the Board that we leave dues as is which met with the approval of the group. The Officer Nominating Committee is putting forth the following slate of candidates: President Linda Hommer; Vice President Kris Howard; Secretary Jim Lucas; Treasurer Nan Brittain; Governor Sheila Wyman. Gary then asked for nominations from the floor for each of the above and there were none, at which time he asked for nominations for Member-at-Large. Steve Howard was nominated and hearing no additional nominations, Gary asked for a motion that nominations cease. Paul Wyman so moved, Wayne Nikolish seconded and the motion passed. New Business: none. Buy and Sell: Larry Noble said he has several items for sale and will send info to Dave H. for posting in the newsletter. Larry Steffen has a set of wheels and tires for sale. That concluded business and a motion to adjourn was made by Larry N., seconded by Paul and we adjourned at 7:45PM. Respectfully, Dave Howard, Secretary CCI Odds and Ends General Meeting Details Please make plans to attend the September general meeting which will be held at Karl Chevrolet. 8 Member News New Members. Look to this space for the most recent additions to the CCI family. We always look forward to meeting new members but there are none to report for September. Birthdays. Wishing a Happy Birthday to the following members with September birthdates: Dan Krejchi 9/2 Paul Wyman 9/2 Joy Wallace 9/9 Larry Noble 9/12 Mert Howard 9/13 Curt McLeland 9/13 Wayne Weidmann 9/16 Denny Luther 9/17 Gary Foster 9/20 Jim Lucas 9/20 Jim Carlisle 9/21 Craig Dunn 9/22 Christine Ruggle 9/26 Events Here s a wrap-up of recently held events along with a description of events on the horizon: Vettes on the River. 522 Corvettes packed the banks of the Mighty Mississippi in Le Claire, IA for this exclusive show on Saturday, August 26 th. A caravan of CCI Vettes departed from Smokey D s on the afternoon before and made the trip to Iowa s east coast. Of course, no trip to Le Claire would be complete without a visit to the American Pickers home base, Antique Archaeology! 8

It was an especially unique experience for the CCI contingent because one car on display, a 1960 roadster, was once owned by CCI and NCCC founding member, Don Hoskins. Don passed the roadster along to his son many years ago and it was recently passed along to a third generation of the Hoskins family, Don s grandson! Our members who attended said that meeting and talking with the Hoskins family was a real treat. Note the CCI patch on the jacket in the passenger seat. Looks like it was an awesome show! If you want to see more, visit the VOTR website at 9

Concours d Elegance. The Des Moines Concours d Elegance took place in the Western Gateway downtown on Sunday, September 10 th. Thanks to Wayne Weidmann for sharing! Walking Tour of Homes. Join us at Hoyt Sherman Place on Sunday, September 24 th when CCI participates on the final day of this annual Sherman Hill event.
