1 The President s Corner by Mickey Breunig, President - LMAC What a fun month August was with the trainer competition, and we have another fun month coming up with the Fall Classic. I hope everyone who competed in the Trainer competition, enjoyed it as much as I did. It was good to see participation from several different clubs. We should all thank P. J. Ash for coordinating the event. I think we have a nice event to build on for next year. Please let me know of any comments or suggestions you might have for next year. The Fall Classic is coming up quickly, scheduled for the 14th - 17th. I am sure that Curtis could use some volunteers. Come to the next club meeting and let Curtis know you are willing to help. 2 Minutes of Aug 12, 2017 Club Meeting by Bob Cooper The club meeting was held on Saturday, August 12, 2017 at LMAC Airfield, 4200 Hedger Lane, Lexington, KY. Meeting was called to order at 12:05 PM Minutes of the June and July meeting were approved. Treasurer s Report for the June and July meeting were presented by Carroll Ware and approved. Safety report - There were no reported accidents at the field. Old Business Mowing grass on crosswind runway will mowed as short as the regular grass runway per Brian Alderman. Mowing will not be more often than once a week to minimize costs. The July Club Picnic report was presented by Mickey Breunig. The picnic was very successful with about 60 people in attendance. Thanks to Terry Booth and Matt Hanson, who manned the grill. Thanks to Jim Newberry for coordinating the event. PayPal Dues Payment Process was discussed by Carroll Ware. Chase Bank will be contacted for additional account to receive PayPal dues payments. The dues fee will be $75 + $3 to cover PayPal fees. A motion to setup the PayPal dues payment process was made by Mickey Breunig and approved. Fall Classic preparations were presented by Curtis Adams. Lee Cruse will advertise the event on the Noon TV Show sometime in the first week of September. A horse farm tour is being offered. Club members will be needed to help with parking and spectator control. New Business Trainer Banger Competition (Aug 12 th ) had the first round completed before the lunch break and this club meeting. Pork, hamburgers and hot dogs were provided. A motion was made by Mickey Breunig to get reimbursed for $70. for Trainer Banger trophies. The motion was approved. Mickey Breunig made the motion to adjourn the meeting at 12:20PM. The motion was approved. The next club meeting will be at the airfield on Saturday, September 9 th at 11:00AM at LMAC Airfield. 2

4 Dan Thompson won the Model of the Month with his Q Trainer RC plane. This model is special because it is made from all plastic parts made on Dan s 3-D printer using.stl files downloaded from the Internet. His 3-D printer made all parts in 64 hours using $18. of plastic, then parts were glued together with medium CA. The multi-colors highlight the various printed parts. The 52 inch wing span plane only weighs 3-1/4 lbs. including battery and receiver because all parts are hollow with strengthening ribs molded in. Dan actually flew this RC plane after photos were taken and it flew very well. This is a real nice looking model! Congratulations to Dan Thompson on winning the Coyote Hobbies gift certificate! 4

5 Fall Classic Giant Scale Fly-in Update by Curtis Adams First things first. Help needed. If you can come out to the field on Wednesday the 13th around 11am. We could use your help setting up the field. We will also need help with parking on Saturday and Sunday. This will involve assisting spectators to a parking spot starting at around 11 am and lasting until around noon. We may need someone to sell raffle tickets on a recliner chair if this donation happens. There will be other things come up that I'm not aware of at this time. If you can come out to the show on Saturday and Sunday please make it known that you are willing to help if needed. I would also like to invite any club member to participate in the event. You are welcome to fly anything on Thursday and Sunday. Size doesn't matter. Friday and Saturday are restricted to large scale planes but you are welcome to fly on those days as well as long as your plane is 80 inches - mono plane, 60 inches bi-plane. Any size turbine jets are allowed. You will need to register per AMA. Landing fee is by donation so it's up to you if you want to donate or not. It's hard to believe the Fall Classic is just over a week away. Seems like yesterday we finished last year's event. We are getting support from both WLEX and WKYT this year. There will be live interviews on the 12th and the 14th. We are hoping this will increase attendance for the noontime shows. We will also try toget onwvlk Jack Pattie show. I haven't had much feedback about pilot attendance but my post on RCU has received 121 views so far. The event was also listed on FB RC events in Kentucky. Hopefully we will have at least 45 or 50 pilots. This year we are offering a horse farm tour on Friday. If you would like to participate in this please send me an letting me know you want to go on the tour. It is provided by a local tour company and should provide a good value at $30.00 for about 3 or 4 hour tour. Please RSVP as soon as possible at cadams5420@gmail.com. You can also join us for dinner onsaturday evening. We will have live entertainment and a great meal provided by Terry Booth. Entertainment is provide by a friend of Ralph Herms. Thanks Ralph. Once again we are offering T- shirts at the Kentucky Fall Classic. The shirts will be available at the fly-in. 7 17 th Annual LMAC Swap Meet Sat. Nov. 11th by Joe Woods Our 2017 Swap Meet is coming up on Saturday, November 11. The place and format of the Swap Meet will be the same as the last few years. I expect that we will have another good turn-out of sellers. Last year, we did not rent as many tables as the prior record year. Please spread the word about our Swap Meet and think about renting a table or tables for yourself. Get your reservation for tables into me as soon as possible. Last year, we had a great donation table with super buys, and there were many good buys provided by some of the people that rented tables. There were a couple of vendors that had cabling, connectors, batteries, and electric motors at good prices. If you have items that you would like to donate, we will have a Club table; so bring those items in before 9:00 AM. A copy of the flyer follows which contains the pertinent information. Last year, we had a good turnout of volunteers to help with the setup. We will start at 7:00 AM, on Saturday, November 11, and expect to have the tables in place by 7:30 AM. The grill should be going by 7:30 or 8:00. Coffee will be available along with breakfast hot items. For those who are there for the setup, there will be no entry fee and you will have first chance to buy those items that you cannot do without. We are always shorthanded for the reset of the tables to the original position. We will start the reset at about 1:00 PM; so stay for that activity or stop by to help out. 7

9 Trainer Banger Competition Report by Mickey Breunig The Trainer Banger Scale Flying Competition on Saturday, August 12 was a great success thanks to P.J. Ash, who was the competition director for the event! This fun spirited scale-like flying competition was designed for everyone to be able to be competitive using any high wing trainer type aircraft. There was several rounds of scoring flown with each pilot s lowest scoring round thrown out. The competition begin with a review of the rules by P.J Ash and then two judging teams were setup for the event to begin. There were around 15 pilots who had a great time competing and enjoying the near perfect weather. Thanks to Mickey for loaning his trainer plane to a number of pilots to fly. And, as always, Mickey and his cooks did a super job on planning and preparing the first class lunch which everyone enjoyed very much. He is an excellent chef!! This was a great event that we are looking forward for it to become an annual event. Everyone extends a hardy thanks to P.J. Ash for establishing this fun event. 10 For Sale Giant Scale RC Plane I am selling my Vaillancourt Hawker Sea Fury. It was framed by a professional builder named Bill Denner. It is a full build kit which was cut by Precision Kit Cutters and has been built to spec according to Vailly plans. It has internal flap pushrods with scale flap hinging, main gear door sequencing with included UP-2 valve, scale Sierra Giant Scale retracts and wheels installed and functioning. The aircraft has all servos installed and functioning, with custom metal pushrod systems on all control surfaces. It was set up with a 3W 75cc engine which can be purchased at an additional cost. The airframe has been sheeted with 1/8 balsa, finished sanded and is ready for immediate fiberglassing, detailing, and painting. Scale spinner is included. Main gear doors are custom made phenolic sheeting which matches wing contour. Cowling is extremely heavy duty fiberglass by Fiberglass Specialties. Canopy and plans included. Since this model is balsa sheeted and sanded, shipping is not available. I am willing to drive a reasonable distance to help in the delivery. This model is truly a work of art and was framed by the same person who did my Vailly Typhoon which is currently flying. Specifications: Wingspan 90 Wing area 1800 sq. in. The intent is to illustrate technological advances that have taken place in our hobby. For some, it will bring back memories, for newcomers it will present a piece of history of radio control model aviation. Here is an advertisement from the February 1938 issue of Model Airplane News for the Comet Keen-Edge Knife. From the same company that sold the Comet airplane kits. Cost was 10 cents and 3 replacement blades were also 10 cents. X-Acto was founded in 1930, so these knifes were a competitor. 11
