September 2017 News Welcome We would like to take this opportunity to welcome all new Gymnasts to our Newby road and Offerton Centres, I am sure we will all make them and their parents feel very welcome, and on behalf of our coaches and management team Welcome to our club! The club was the location for the BBC programme Treasure Champs and the Competition Squad gymnasts were filmed during one of their Friday training sessions. SSoG Calendar th Sept Start of the 10 week Classes 7th/8th Oct Paul Reay Team Challenge at Wigan 23rd to 27th October Holiday Camps at the Newby Road Centre. 28th/29th Oct North West Individual & Apparatus Championships (Out of Age) at Wigan 11th/12th Nov GM 4 Piece at Wigan 11th/12th Nov English Gold Silver and Bronze Championships 19th Nov SSoG Club Championship and Presentation Events at Newby Rd. 2nd/3rd Dec English Gold Silver and Bronze Championships 10th Dec Inter-County teams Do read page 6 of the newsletter as it gives details of the new registration process for British Gymnastics, which has changed due to the new General Data Protection Regulations. SSoG is hosting a seminar run by BG to explain to NW clubs how the new system will work. Congratulations to 4 of our parents who passed their Club Judge exams during the month. A big well done. Frankie Retires This month we say goodbye to Frankie Rossi the gymnast and welcome her to the club as a coach. After a long career in the sport, since 2013 with SSoG, but before that at Vernon Park, Frankie has decided to stop training. She has represented Greater Manchester County for Grades and Inter-Counties competitions. Frankie is currently taking her Level 1 coaching course and will coach with Berenice. Page 1
CBBC at SSoG We have had the BBC and other production companies at the club over the years and have lent them our mats to help out with their shows. On Friday they were at Newby Rd filming for a new show called Treasure Champs. Sienna Bullen, from our Competition Squad, has been chosen to be involved in an exciting new series for CBeebies called Treasure Champs. The show will follow the adventures of two animated characters who explore a different value (or treasure ) each episode e.g. honesty, courage, sharing etc. Using a combination of vibrant faith stories, songs, and heart-warming real-life examples featuring children, these characters will introduce the value / treasure to the audience in a fun and relatable way. The short film we are hoping to film with Sienna is about the value sacrifice, and how Sienna is a keen gymnast who may sacrifice time doing other things to improve her gymnastic skills / ability! Interesting to see the process that the BBC team went through to get the footage they needed and we all look forward to the show on CBeebies later in the year. A big thanks to all who were very patient during the long process of making programmes, filling in all the permission forms and making the evening go smoothly. Adult Gymnastics Bookings For the Adult Beginners on Sunday there are 2 booking options, either as a Block Booking for those who can commit to attend every week, or a Weekly Booking (online) for those that want to attend occasionally. NEW BG MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS Gymnasts who attend adult gymnastic sessions on Fridays or on Sundays more regularly than 1 hour per week must have British Gymnastics membership. Should you only wish to attend a session once a month no British Gymnastics membership is required as you are covered by our BG insurance. This can be applied for via the British Gymnastics website or through SSOG. Page 2
New term Our new term of gymnastics starts on Monday 4th September. The term is for 10 weeks. Monday to Thursday times at Newby Road have changed and we now have two sessions on per evening and 5.15 Socks Unfortunately, we will no longer be providing socks for the gymnast s due to Health & Safety reasons. Please could we ask that you provide a pair of socks in your child s gym bags so that they Notice Boards to Please can you take care in the carpark area during change over times and be considerate when parking. We are improving the external lighting fitting to the car park area ready for the darker winter can go on the trampoline when it is their rotation. Any gymnast who does not have socks will not be allowed on the trampoline and will be given another piece of equipment to use. Off to University nights and are currently in discussion with the Landlord regarding the completion of the car park resurfacing so that we can add markings showing the parking places and pedestrian areas. Club Kit There is still time to get your recreational, preschool and youth club kit. Please the office@stockportgymnastics.com for an order form. For Club the orders will still go directly to Jayne Mooney. Social Media You may have noticed we have some new signage up in the club, please can I ask that parents have a look at the notice boards from time to time so that you don t miss any important communications from the club and your coaches. Offerton notices will be up on the wall as you enter the sports hall. Paul Reay Team Challenge After exam success we say goodbye to Coaches Sarah Dean and Izzy Blissett and Gymnast Daisy Broadbent, who are off to University. Have a great time and we hope that they will pop in when they are on holiday to see us. We have a Website and a Facebook page and have just signed up for Instagram. The pages have not always been up to date and we are revamping how we communicate to keep you in touch. When we have sorted Instagram look out for photos and streaming videos. We will be entering teams in each of the 4 competitions as follows: Level 3 2 from Charlotte Wells, Amy Robinson and Ruby Hewitt. Level 4 5 from Heather Davenport, Jenna Kenyon, Macy-Anne Douglas, Caitlin Mathison, Holly Duffy, Leah Kidd, Anna Marsh, Millie Hewart, Charlotte Cleaver Level 5 Team is Kate Wigglesworth, Sophie Wigglesworth, Alicia Gill, Elyce Pearson Level 6 Team is Gabriella Widdall, Molly Coghlan, Amy Winterbone, Ceira Mooney Trials for the Level 4 and 3 teams will be week commencing 4th Sept as we have to get the entries in by the end of the week. Preference for the Level 4 team will be given to gymnasts able to perform the linked acro on the beam or Tsuki on the vault. If we are short for gymnasts for the Level 6 team we will ask gymnasts from the Competition Squad to join the team. Page 3
More Lux The lighting in the gym was replaced with much brighter LED bulbs Christmas 2015 and on the August Bank Holiday Monday a working party of Club parents removed 20 months of accumulated chalk dust from the glass. Thanks to all who gave up their holiday to make the gym a bit brighter. While the parents were grafting the offspring were coached and making full use of the gym equipment. The job needed a scaffold, taking up the sprung floor, moving the beams and bars, so was a pretty big job. Working on the scaffold needed a head for heights. We also repainted the tumble track wall where gymnasts had picked at the foam. No more picking please! Keep it white. Mike Lea visits Mike Lea, BG Master Coach and Olympic Coach came in for 2 sessions during the holidays to work with the club gymnasts on more complicated moves. Really useful for coaches and a great photo opportunity. Page 4
Holiday Courses We have had four weeks of fabulous holiday courses run by Laura and her team of coaches. We have now opened bookings for October Half term courses at Newby Road, where we will be running single day courses (9 3.30pm) which will include specialist days for Floor, Beam and Bars and Tumbling. If you would like to book, please do so online at Come along and enjoy! Our New Code Judges The Code of Points, which explains all of the rules and marking system for gymnastics, changed after the Rio Olympics and this year all judges have been getting qualified for our competitions. Congratulations to our newly qualified judges, Sylvia Wilson, Suzanne Winterbone, Cassie Carrick and Clare Hales. Also well done to Bev Perkins, who has requalified and good luck to Nikki Havery, who takes her Regional Judge exams on 9th Sept. We are on the way to having enough judges for the next 4 years and have more candidates going on the next course in Oct. If you are interested, then please let Mike know. We can never have too many judges. Was the Scaffold High? Yep and it wobbled a bit when it was on the carpet rather than the concrete floor. Here are a couple of pictures of the pits from the platform to give you a feeling of height. For those who wondered what the U-Pit was like, you now know. Page 5
New British Gymnastics membership renewal process Dear Member, Parent or Guardian, Did you know that joining our club includes becoming a member of British Gymnastics, the national governing body for gymnastics in the UK? Until this year we have sent members details such as names, ages and addresses to British Gymnastics to allow them to activate personal member benefits for you, such as insurance and discounts, and to send out your membership pack. From October 2017, to comply with new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) we will no longer be able to pass on these personal details to British Gymnastics. We are therefore asking all members (or your parent/guardian if you are under 16 years old) to renew your British Gymnastics membership directly through the British Gymnastics website. A new membership process - here s how it works After registering with the club and paying us your combined club and British Gymnastics membership fee, you (or your parent or guardian) will need to go to the British Gymnastics website to complete the new membership or renewal process. This process creates your vital insurance cover. Until that registration process is completed on the British Gymnastics website you will not be able to attend our classes. The registration system on the British Gymnastics website is quick and easy to use by mobile phone, tablet, computer or laptop. You won t need to pay anything extra. British Gymnastics will activate your membership and insurance cover immediately as well as sending your membership confirmation and benefits information by both post and . British Gymnastics will notify us when you have completed your registration. We ll give you more information to help you with this process before memberships are due in October. Thank you for your patience and co-operation with this change. Yours faithfully, Page 6
