1 CARVING TALK December 2011 Presidents Notes: Jackie wants to say Hello to everyone, wish us all a Merry Christmas and a Happier New Year. She is taking care of Mickey 24/7 while he recuperates from his knee replacement surgery. He is now able to lift his foot with the help of a cane and has a new respect for others who have gone before him. Lucy Collins is doing well and will leave the rehab facility at the end of the week. The facility had a bout of flu hit everyone and they are watching Ron as he is still recovering. Oregon has written, sharing their pleasure and excitement over the nice quality ornaments that were sent for them. Note: Keep Kristeen Anderson from the Coastal Carvers (coordinator with Mickey for swap) in your prayers. She is going into the hospital with liver problems. 2 2011 Ornaments for Kids Our Ornaments for Kids Program is alive and well under Ferd Kruetzkamp s very capable direction. This year River Valley Wood Carvers decorated trees for the patients and resident children at St. Elizabeth Pediatric Ward, Redwood School and the Diocesan Catholic Children's Home. Over 200 handcarved Christmas Tree ornaments were placed on trees to be given to every child in each of the facilities during the month of December. Unfortunately we did not keep a record of how many of our carvers donated their work to the program, but are always in need of more participation. We did receive ornaments from quite a number of outside carvers, some from as far away as Arizona and New Mexico. The very colorful displays were a delight to the eye when the trees were fully laden. Plus, this year at Redwood we got some extra help in decorating the tree. The supervisor, Brigitte, brought out one of their little girls to see our efforts. She was named Cara and about 4 or 5 years old. She was so enchanted with the whole scene. We offered her an ornament to hang and very shyly she accepted it and found the place she wanted it on the tree. She had a little trouble getting the hook engaged on the limb, but as soon as she finished she dashed back to the box and asked if she could do another one. The answer was "Yes" of course and grinning from ear to ear, she helped us empty the box. What a delight! If you're not participating in this program you are truly missing one of the real joys in Carving. By Dick Middleton Ornaments for Kids Carver - Jim Moser Carving from the Heart Jim has been carving since 2001 when a friend introduced him to the art. He has enjoyed Relief, chip carving and of course carving. Pyrography is a new area he is starting to explore. Jim has been Past President of the Dayton Carvers Guild and chairman for 3 years of the Artistry in Woods Show. He met Mickey Huston and discovered they were both shriners which eventually brought up the RVWC Ornaments for Kids program. He started with 20 ornaments about 3 years ago. Then with extra time while driving grandkids to sports practices, he was able to carve over 100 ornaments. If it can bring a smile to a kids face, then that was the most Important thing and his ornaments have brought lots of smiles.

3 2011 Recognition Dinner This years dinner was a special evening hosted by our own Donna Waller and Jackie Huston. Bob and Joan Trame decorated the room to give it a holiday feel and made a delicious chocolate and white sheet cake. The food brought by old and new members filled three tables. Certificates of Appreciation and Recognition were presented to members culminating in the presentation of the Mitch Newman Award by Pat Scott. After the awards came the gift exchange. It was definitely a Christmas Party exchanging gifts with the Oregon Coastal Carvers and the Alabama Carvers. The ornaments were beautiful and unique and brought smiles to everyone. The RVWC club gift exchange was next and didn t disappoint. There were all kinds of beautiful pieces in all the different styles. Good Friends and Food made a great evening spent together. Submitted by Pat Scott Stu Martin Seminar: Nov. 9 & 10th Indians and Santas were looking close to being finished and ready for paint when these pics were taken. Several carvings were being prepared for Christmas presents. Attending were: Mickey Huston, Ed Stover, Veronica Olson, Don Hogue, Bob Manning, Ken Limings, and Pat Leibreich.

4 Update: Oregon Coastal Carvers Ornament Exchange Thank you to Mickey Huston for coordinating with the Coastal Carvers and bringing this fun event to the RVWC. The exchange was held at the Recognition dinner, Gifts were handed out by a numbering system, biographies and ornaments were then shared with all. All participants were tickled with their treasures and want to Thank and wish the Coastal Carvers a Merry Christmas! Update: Mickey HI Everyone, This past Tuesday, Dec. 6 th, I went into Anderson Mercy and had a total left knee replacement. All is going well one week later as Jackie and I settle in and getting thru the things that need to be done for me to get well. I never dreamed that the pain level would be anything like what it is and was. But all is going well. If you sent me anything of real importance please send it again. I want you to know that I hurt But I ALSO KNOW that I am better off than some in fact most, and I will get better some. THANKS, Mickey Update: Alabama Ornament Exchange All participants were wearing smiles while sharing their ornaments and reading the biographies with other RVWC members at this years Recognition Dinner. 6 2011 Mitch Newman Award Goes to John Dotson The nomination committee, consisting of former Mitch Newman Award winners nominated John Dotson to be the recipient of the 2011 Mitch Newman Award which was presented at the Recognition Dinner on December 1st at the Hilltop Church of Christ. Last years winner, Pat Scott, read us a list of John s life achievements that lead to his nomination and presented him with the above plaque. Congratulations and Thank You John! 7 Library Report: In November RVWC had a month long display in place at Durr Branch Library in Independence, KY. We had 3 full cabinets and it was one of the largest displays we have ever done. Over a dozen of our carvers took part with pieces on display. The response from the library personnel and their customers was very positive. At this point, our next display will be at the Campbell County, Downtown Library. More on this later. by Dick Middleton Franklin Indiana Magic in Wood Update: Three carvers from RVWC, Don Hogue, Bob Manning and Dick Middleton, went to Franklin, IN for their annual November Magic in Wood Show. It was a good show with twenty-three tables of carvers and three vendors. We entered 6 pieces total in the competition and brought home four ribbons. Don Hogue won a blue ribbon (1st place) for his road runner bird in Realistic Birds. Bob Manning won a red ribbon (2nd place) with one of his famous cowboys in Caricatures, Human. Dick Middleton won a blue ribbon and a red ribbon for two of his Santas in the Santa category. So we were quite successful. Best of all we had a great time seeing and visiting with people and spreading the word on carving and RVWC. To resize a picture/pattern on your computer. 1. right click on the picture 2. Click on Copy 3. Open up your Microsoft WORD program 4. Right click 5. Click on Paste (The picture that shows will have dotted lines and approximately 8 open dots around the outside of it. ) 6. Put your mouse on one corner dot 7. Depress the left button on your mouse and Drag or push the dot to make it smaller/larger. It runs pretty true to size from the screen to the paper when you print. This bit of information comes from Jacqueline Welch of Harvard, Il. She and her family were a guest of our club this past year.
