This precedes when the April program is determined so the write-up on the program is not included. Marshall New Officers Tim Detweiler, Carver of the Month Spring brings election of officers to the club. We celebrate having a new President, Charlie Cooke. The other officers were reelected. We appreciate having had Sandy Czajka s leadership of The Club. Joe, thanks for the huge amount of work in setting up the meetings and for continuing to do so. Sam and Barb, we are grateful to have you. Tim likes to carve pretty much everything, especially animals and relief. At the April meeting we ll find out what makes Tim tick. 2 Carving a Niche in Social Media Yes, that s right! Artistry in Wood has turned and carved a space on Facebook with an increasingly growing fan base. Located at pages/artistry-in-wood-dayton-oh/, our Artistry in Wood page has close to 600 fans from over 20 countries around the world with a reach of over 2300 people weekly! The page highlights a different artist from the show each day along with a photo of one of their favorite pieces from the 2012 show. We are also posting pictures of works in progress from our Carver s Guild meetings, updates on the show, and fan albums showing pictures from our incredibly talented fans (many of whom we are trying to get to display at the show!). We ll post the professional photos of the winners as the show approaches. Everyone is loving a daily glimpse into the show, so share the link with all your friends, family, customers, and any random persons who love true Artistry in Wood! All you need is a name and account. As with any social networking site, what you put into (or leave out of) your profile is entirely up to you. You can just leave the profile blank if you want to stay more anonymous and just have access to the Artistry in Wood site, or you can put as many pictures and info about yourself as you want. If you decide to create an account, there are a variety of security options to give access or limit who can see what you post. My recommendation would be to review these, because the default settings are pretty open for access. Here is an added comment from a hacker who couldn t click his way out of a wet paper bag. The Bedel link didn t work for me. With coaching from Holly, here is what did work. Bring up facebook and log on (you must have gotten an account). Then, in the bar that says, Search for people, places and things, type in Artistry In Wood Dayton OH, click the search button and there should appear a tab for Artistry in Wood Dayton OH. Click that and you will be on the facebook page. Baseball caps pulled low to hide their faces, the carvers pussyfooted into Marian s. But, once the pizzas kissed the tables, all obscuration was abandoned. The bunch became boisterous with talk about carving and who wasn t there. You are invited to join The Dayton Carvers Guild members and friends at Marion s Piazza at noon on the first Wednesday of every month. Marion s is at 3443 North Dixie Drive in Dayton. 2

4 The Iowa Show is in June The 2013 International Woodcarvers Congress will be held in Maquoketa, Iowa June 9 th - 16 th. It is sponsored by the Affiliated Wood Carvers, Limited. Besides the competition, activities include seminars, The Awards Banquet, The AWC Membership Meeting and The Judges Critique Sessions. The International Woodcarvers Congress offers over 85 separate categories in the judged competition. Cash awards and prizes have exceeded $20,000 in the past thanks to very generous sponsors. The judges hold two Judges Critique Sessions. These sessions provide insight on what the judges look for. These have proven to be one the most popular events. AWC hosts seminars taught by some of the foremost carvers in the world. How to enter the Iowa competition without traveling: Each year the Belchers take members' carvings to the competition, unpack and enter them, repack them after the competition and return them safely home to you. Members should soon be receiving the newsletter containing the entry form, competition rules and categories/classes. Extra copies will be available at the club meetings when the entry forms are available. If you will go to the website, you can see this information online so that you can know which classes you want to enter. When the entry forms are available, please complete them, mail them in with your entry money, so the committee can register them and return your entry tags to you. There will be more information in future club newsletters. Life Member Jan Fader Though not a carver nor a member, Jan Fader has contributed to The Dayton Carvers Guild and Artistry in Wood for years. We treasure her help. At the March meeting she was made Dayton Carvers Guild Member for Life. Jan handles the notification of newsletter releases, she handles the paper address labels for mailed newsletters and the data files that go with those. She is an Artistry in Wood Committee Member and now is The AIW Secretary. New Members We welcome you to our group, Steve Kemp, Jose' Casanova, Liz Ball and life member Jan Fader. Steve lives in Brookville and Jose lives in Huber Heights. Liz gave the Hidden Picture Puzzle program at the March meeting. She lives in Tipp City. Show & Tell Drawing At the April meeting, Don Stephenson was the lucky recipient of an Ol Don DVD on carving the Pensive Ponderer.. 50/50 Drawing At the April meeting, Charlie Cooke crammed a cool $18 into his pants pocket.
