1 Dayton Carvers Guild October News from a chip carver who, if he were French, would be called that damned Frenchman. You are invited to contribute to the newsletter. Please contact Marshall Stearns at lstearns@erinet.com or October Meeting: Annual Pot Luck Dinner and Ornaments Contest On October 25 th we get to enjoy more good food than befits our girth. We deserve to fatten up just a bit prior to Artistry in Wood, like a bear preparing for hibernation. Pot luck starts at 6:30, half an hour early, and we meet in the cafeteria up the hall. Bring your favorite dish and the utensils to serve it. We use only what we bring, so be sure to bring flatware, dish, tumbler, your beverage and napkin for your own use. This is the final meeting prior to Artistry in Wood and at this meeting we will collect more ornaments for the tree at Artistry in Wood. The ornaments get raffled off and the proceeds help support Artistry in Wood. Bring as many ornaments as you can. They will all be displayed on tables where you will vote for your favorites. There are coveted prizes for those who carved the most-favored pieces. There is no Show & Tell. Artistry in Wood November 12 & 13, Volunteer, we need you! Artistry in Wood is just around the corner. It s a great endeavor, put on by our club and that means there is a lot of work to be done. We do that, but there is always the need for just a bit more. The team leaders go nuts when they have open work slots. For the newer members, ask about what s involved and how to do it. The bottom line is, working the show is a lot of fun. Pitch in, work like mad and have a great time. Volunteers get in free the day they work. Volunteers need not be members of Dayton Carvers Guild. Get a spouse or a friend to volunteer. On the following pages, find lists of jobs and whom to contact to sign up for them. This list is just an early snapshot. Help is needed to set up everything on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday prior to the show and to take down the Monday after. For that, just show up at The Expo Center when you can. We start at 9 am. Next Dayton Carvers Guild Meeting Tuesday, October 25, 2011, 6:30 pm at United Rehabilitations Services Building, 4710 Old Troy Pike (at Needmore Road), Dayton, Ohio Program: Pot Luck Dinner and Ornaments Contest 1

It s available from Belchers Supply, CCA members and other sources. 5
6 On the morning of the first Wednesday of the month the guy carvers don their best polo shirts. The lady carvers change their white granny panties for the red lace thong. Everyone meets at high noon at Marion s Piazza. The chip carver said to the bird carver, Those hundred dollar jeans do wonders for a mature lady. These only cost eighty, said the bird carver. He replied, You can get them for ten at Tractor Supply. - Sorry for that friends. I just couldn t stop. The jeans exchange actually took place between myself and the passionate grammamarian who does the newsletter grammar proof reading. The granny-thong thing came from a novel. Carvers Stick with Show & Tell At the September meeting, the carvers held high their carvings for Show and Tell as though they were carrying the Shroud of Turin into church. Dick Belcher s ticket was drawn first, then Joe Lehman s and, finally, Mulie Sheets, who got stuck with a stick of that sticky Gorilla 100% Tough Wood Glue. Discount for Dayton Carvers Guild Members at Sherwin-Williams We were pleased to hear from Joe Brockman at our September meeting. He is a Sales Representative for Sherwin- Williams, Product Finishes Department. The Dayton Carvers Guild has been given an account at Sherwin-Williams. Members may get a discount at any Sherwin-Williams store by giving them the account number Write the number on the back of your membership card and carry it in your wallet. Sherwin-Williams carries a full line of wood finishing products, something few of us knew because it is not stocked in most stores. The Hamilton, Ohio store stocks it. For product details, see their web site, 50/50 Pays Off Richly Mr. Worley stuffed a fat roll of fifteen one-dollar bills into his pants pocket, having won the September 50/50 drawing. 6
