1 IMCC Newsletter 27 Friday, 31 st August 2018 Year 12 ATAR Physics Course The senior students currently undertaking Physics at the College, completed their ATAR Course this week, having recently completed their remaining assessments. The final investigation kept the group very busy over a two-day period, as they worked with lasers to determine the wavelength of red light, whilst also demonstrating that light can be bent around corners. They also used a microwave kit to identify the wavelength of these short wavelength, electromagnetic radio waves. To complete the circuit of experiments, the students used transparent media to investigate the refraction of visible light and ultimately determine the refractive index of a Perspex block to calculate the speed at which light travels in this medium. The intensive range of activities gave the students access to equipment they normally would not have an opportunity to use and they all responded well to the requirements of their penultimate assessment for the year. Mr Tony Summers Science Teacher Spelling Bee 2018 After two weeks of classroom testing including all students from Years 7 to 12, the day finally arrived, the College Spelling Bee. On Wednesday the 29 th August, 26 of our most capable spellers prepared themselves psychologically for a day of open microphone competition. With a representation of students across all year levels, the library was abuzz with students who cheered on their peers while competitors fought, letter by letter, for Spelling Bee glory. The students displayed passion and focus, and the spelling of words like phenomenon, bureau and monologue, were made to look like child s play, astounding both the audience and Staff alike. After almost forty minutes of contest, play was extended from a mere lunch-time event to that of a competition spanning across three days. 2 On day three we had just two students standing, Leur Parana, Year 9 and Laura Carter, Year 12. In the end the deciding word was soliloquy and Leur Parana took out the trophy. I would like to thank all students for their enthusiasm and commend the Grand Final participants in particular for having the courage to compete in front of a 150+ strong crowd. I am so proud of you for beeing yourself and doing your own sting. Mrs Crystal Blaze English Teacher SunSmart School Surfing Titles On Thursday the 23 rd August, we had six students represent the College in the SunSmart School Surfing Titles, held at Trigg Beach, in perfect conditions. Curran Lipscombe and Carl Dales held their own in the Senior Boys Surfing, despite being up against tough competition. Joshua Lamacraft and Noah Tonkin surfed their way into the Senior Bodyboarding final, narrowly missing out on the win. Angus McKinnon and Tayln Robis progressed through round one of Junior Bodyboarding, however they were unfortunately knocked out in Round 2. 3 Catholic Performing Arts Festival - Music This week marked the final week of the Catholic Performing Arts Festival, and what a week it was. Starting with a busy Monday, the Electric guitar students travelled to Zenith Music, Claremont, for solo performances. Students from Years 8 to 11 took to the stage and received glowing reports. Well done to Stefan Chrisostomou, Alex Hardy, Ella Moore, Mihi Wells and Manuel Yusuf. The final evening performances took place at Trinity College, East Perth, for the Barbershop and 2108 singers in the Choral section. Both groups performed with energy and enthusiasm to a very impressed audience. Senior drama students performed monologues at Chisolm Catholic College, Bedford, on Wednesday, receiving fantastic results. The week ended with our piano students performing solos at Zenith Music, Claremont. Thomas Berard, and Diron Lau performed very impressive pieces, closing off the festival very well. On top of what was a very big week for those in the Performing Arts the week, was also a phenomenal week for a Awards given to our students. Dance On Thursday the 23 rd August, the College Junior Dance Team performed at this year s Catholic Performing Arts Festival at the Perth Exhibition and Convention Centre. The team performed their contemporary routine, Invincible, choreographed by 2017 College Graduate and Dance Captain, Emilee Erikson. We received the very exciting news this week that the students received an Excellence Award for their performance. The dance piece looked at cyber bullying and its prevalence in young people s lives today via social media. In honour of bullying prevention month in October, the dance was created to inspire action against cyberbullying and to raise awareness of this harassment. The dancers performed with warrior style costuming to portray young people who will not stand for this treatment, as well as representing young people who despite bullying, stay strong and keep moving forward. It was a wonderful evening and I am extremely proud of the students who performed, and Emilee for choreographing such a professional dance piece Important Dance and Cheer Dates: AASCF Comp: 31 st August to 2 nd September CUA Varsity Comp: 9 th September ATC Comp: 14 th to 16 th September Dance Night Years 8-12: 19 th September Dance Night The College s Dance Night is almost here. On Wednesday the 19 th September, all students involved in the Dance course and extra-curricular Dance teams, will be performing at the Allan Shaw Centre at Peter Moyes Anglican Community School. There will be an array of performances at the show including Hip Hop, Jazz, Bollywood, Latin, Contemporary and Cheerleading.

5 The Year 12 students will also perform original solos, choreographed by themselves, as well as a contemporary dance piece choreographed by 2017 College Graduate, Zarlie Stubbs. The Junior and Senior Dance Teams, as well as the Cheerleading Team will also present their competition routines. Tickets will be on sale from Monday the 3 rd September, at $5 for students and $10 for adults (18+). 6 City to Surf On Sunday 26th August, 20 Senior Students, volunteered at the City to Surf for Activ. We were delighted to assist with a large variety of duties, including helping in the 42km Marathon Recovery Tent and at the final finishing line encouraging runners to run those last few metres. Starting at 6.30am, we were tasked with sorting the hundreds of bags belonging to the marathon runners, placing them in numerical order, allowing them to be easily found once the event was complete. We also helped transport water to the recovery tent and to the finishing line. We were all buzzing as the first few runners started to pass the finishing line. Some of us were handing out water and lending a helping hand to those runners who had just finished, others were handing out T-shirts, food and belongings to those in the recovery tent. Alongside these duties, we got to listen to some of the incredible reasons that inspired some of the runners to participate at this year s City to Surf marathon. It was an incredible day that I m sure none of us are likely to forget. The highlight of the day was being able to watch our very own Mr Bryant and Mrs Peters cross the finish line after running 42 km, with all of us cheering them on at the finishing line.

Ellie Miller, Teal Scherini, Mae Ohsawa & Jasmine Back - Year 12 Students National Child Protection Week National Child Protection Week is the 2 nd to 8 th September. To support parents involvement, Catholic Education, WA has developed resources to assist members of school communities with understanding the strategies as we continue to develop as a Child Safe School. More information about the child safe initiatives can be found at the Catholic Education website Our College has undertaken several initiatives in the last 12 months that has included the implementation of the Code of Conduct, Staff Professional Development and Workshops for students and parents such as last week s Cyber Safety Workshops supported by the College Parent Group. Creations Exhibition We would like to extend an invitation to all parents, students and staff for the opening of the 2018 Creations Exhibition. This year s exhibition will be held in the Paul Rafter Centre on Tuesday 11 th September at 6.00pm and will showcase a variety of works from Years 7 to 12, in the areas of Visual Arts, Photography, Design & Technology and Fashion & Textiles. All guests will be able to cast their vote on the opening night for the People s Choice Award, with the winning student being awarded a $30 JB Hi-Fi gift card. Awards will also be presented to students who have created outstanding pieces of work during the year. 8 Pastoral Letter from Archbishop Timothy Costelloe Archbishop Timothy Costelloe has prepared a Pastoral Letter regarding the presentation of the Endof-Life Care Report in Western Australia by a Committee of Inquiry last week. Over 700 submissions were received, including one from Archbishop Costelloe on behalf of the Catholic community in the Archdiocese of Perth. Less than 36 per cent of submissions favoured the introduction of some form of doctor-assisted suicide or euthanasia, but the Committee chose to recommend that laws to permit what it calls voluntary assisted dying should be introduced. The laws proposed in WA present a serious challenge to human dignity in this State. Archbishop Costelloe has asked to share this Pastoral Letter.

9 Soundscape 2018 Soundscape Festival is back again for another fun-filled afternoon on the final day of Term. Three stages showcasing our College bands and soloists will entertain students as well as a guest artist and DJ crew.
