2 Learning to Dejunk Your Design Layouts Memorize & apply these four basic principles described in The Non-Designer s Design Book, by Robin Williams. Proximity: Principle: Move related items close to each other. Purpose: To organize the page. Alignment: Principle: Place your design elements on the page with care. Every item should have a visual connection with something else on the page. Purpose: To unify the page. Repetition: Principle: Repeat some aspect of the design throughout the page. Purposes: To unify the page. To add visual interest. Contrast: Principle: If two items are not similar, then make them different, very different! Purposes: To create interest on the page.
