THIS WEEK IN BOISE STATE GYMNASTICS: The 18th-ranked Boise State gymnastics team takes its longest road-trip of the regular season, traveling to Chicago to compete in the Chicago Style Collegiate meet. The Broncos will take on Bowling Green, North Carolina and Illinois-Chicago, Feb. 7 at the Navy Pier in a 6:30 p.m. (MT) start. TICKETS: Tickets will be available at the door for $20. For more information, please visit ALL-TIME SERIES: Boise State has winning records against all three opponents this week. The Broncos and Illinois-Chicago have faced off three times with Boise State earning a 2-1 record, winning the last two meetings. Their most recent meeting came Feb. 9, 2009 at the Chicago Style meet. Boise State last faced North Carolina Jan. 2, 2009 and holds a 1-0 record over the Tar Heels. They also hold a 1-0 record over Bowling Green, taking on the Falcons Jan. 18, BOISE STATE BRONCOS : Boise State (5-2) enters its fi fth week of the season. The Broncos rank 16th in the GymInfo National Weekly Poll, while also sitting in a tie for eighth on the uneven bars, 13th on vault, tied for 22nd on fl oor exercise and 23rd on balance beam as a team. The Broncos hold a season-high score of earned Jan. 24 against SUU. Ciera Perkins leads the team in individual top-100 national rankings this week. The junior ranks 11th in the nation on bars, while also tying for 32nd on vault and 35th on fl oor. Junior Kelsey Morris sits at 88th on fl oor and 62nd in the all-around as the only other Bronco to hold multiple top-100 rankings. Amanda Otuafi and Maddie Krentz rank 39th and 97th on vault, respectively, while Kelsey Black ranks 51st on bars and Paige Urquhart ranks 65th on beam. This week s meet at the Chicago Style Invite is the third of fi ve regular season away meets for the Broncos this season. BOWLING GREEN FALCONS : Bowling Green (3-2) enters the week on a three-meet winning streak. The Falcons rank 39th in the GymInfo team rankings while also sitting at 28th on fl oor, 37th on vault, 39th on bars and 47th on beam this week. BGSU s top score for the season of came Jan. 25 against Eastern Michigan. The Falcons have three individuals in the nation s top-100 rankings, including Alyssa Nocella (72nd), Lauren Feely (83rd) and Gina Locigno (94th) in the all-around. ILLINOIS-CHICAGO FLAMES : Illinois-Chicago (2-6) enters the week as the 55th-best team in the country according to GymInfo. The Flames tie for 37th in the nation as a team on bars, 56th on vault, 58th on fl oor and 63rd on beam. They hold a season high of earned Feb. 1 in the State of Illinois vs. State of Michigan meet. Catherine Dion is the only team member to hold a top-100 individual ranking this week, sitting at 33rd in the all-around, 63rd on bars and 81st on beam. NORTH CAROLINA TAR HEELS : North Carolina (4-2) enters the week with two home wins under its belt. The Tar Heels rank 33rd in this week s national GymInfo rankings, while also ranking 31st on beam, 32nd on bars, 36th on vault and 38th on fl oor as a team. Their season-high of came Jan. 31 at home against Pittsburgh. Lexi Cappalli leads North Carolina in the top-100 individual rankings sitting at 39th in the all-around, 35th on fl oor and 99th on beam. Haley Watts ranks 41st in the all-around and 85th on bars, while Michelle Ikoma joins her on bars at 81st. Janell Sargent rounds out the rankings with a 47th spot on beam this BRONCOS FALL ON THE ROAD TO SOUTHERN UTAH (JAN. 31, 2014)... The 16th-ranked Boise State gymnastics team was upset Friday evening visiting unranked Southern Utah in Centrum Arena. The Broncos (5-2) dropped a decision to the Thunderbirds in their third meeting this season. Boise State opened up strong with a score on uneven bars followed by a vault score. In the third rotation they earned an uncharacteristically low score of on fl oor exercise and fi nished the night with a on balance beam. The Broncos collected individual titles on bars, fl oor and the all-around. The team opened up the night on the uneven bars, scoring a team total, tying the 10th-best score in school history. Kelsey Black and Diana Mejia earned career-high scores of 9.90 to lead the Broncos tying with SUU s Alyssa Click for the event win. The pair was followed by Ciera Perkin s solid routine, earning her a fourth-place fi nish. Krystine Jacobsen placed fi fth adding a routine while Maddie Krentz added a routine to place eighth and round out the scorers. Kelsey Morris placed 11th with a 9.10 to round out the Broncos lineup. Moving on to vault Perkins and Amanda Otuafi led the Broncos with vaults, tying for second-place. Morris earned a 9.80 placing fi fth, while Black tied for sixth scoring a Paige Urquhart fi nished in ninth, earning a while Jacobsen placed 11th with a to round out the lineup. The Broncos ended with a team total on vault. SUU s Memory Shettles earned the vault title with a score of Perkins earned her second-straight fl oor title scoring a and sharing the win with SUU s Natalie Trejo. Morris placed fourth with a 9.775, while Black placed seventh (9.725). Brooke Graham placed 10th (9.50), Marissa Wossner placed 11th (9.450) and Otuafi placed 12th (9.075). In the fi nal rotation Southern Utah was closing in on the Broncos. Jacobsen gave her best effort on the beam, tying for third with a Urquhart and Wossner each earned scores, tying for sixth, while Morris and Mejia tied for eighth with scores. Graham fi nished off the line-up with a 9.575, good for 11th. SUU s Shettles earned her second title of the night, scoring a on beam. BRONCOS BEGIN ROAD SWING AT SOUTHERN UTAH (JAN. 29, 2014)... THIS WEEK IN BOISE STATE GYMNASTICS: The 16th-ranked Boise State gymnastics team hits the road for its second away meet of the season. The Broncos head to Cedar City, Utah, to take on 35th-ranked Southern Utah University in Centrum Arena, Friday, Jan. 31 at 7 p.m. TICKETS: Tickets will be available at the door for $7 (adults), $5 (seniors/juniors) and free with SUU student ID. With their win over the Thunderbirds last week, the Broncos improved to in the all-time series winning the last fi ve meetings, including wins on Jan. 11 and Jan. 24 of this year. BOISE STATE BRONCOS : Boise State (5-1) enters its fourth week of the season ranking 16th in the GymInfo National Weekly Poll. The Broncos also rank as high as ninth on the uneven bars as a team, while also ranking 12th on vault, 15th on fl oor exercise and 25th on the balance beam. The Broncos hold a season-high score of earned Jan. 24 against SUU. Individually, six Broncos hold top-100 rankings in their respective events this week. Ciera Perkins holds the team s highest individual rank, sitting at eighth on the bars. Perkins also ranks 35th on vault and 34th on fl oor. Kelsey Morris also holds three rankings, sitting at 44th in the all-around, 47th on bars and 83rd on fl oor. Kelsey Black ranks 77th on bars and 85th on vault, while Amanda Otuafi and Maddie Krentz join her on vault at 39th and 93rd, respectively. Paige Urquhart rounds out the rankings, sitting at 57th on beam. This week s meet at Southern Utah is the second of fi ve regular season away meets for the Broncos this season. PERKINS NAMED MRGC SPECIALIST OF THE WEEK (JAN. 27, 2014)... The Mountain Rim Gymnastics Championship has named Boise State s Ciera Perkins the MRGC Specialist of the Week after recording a pair of s against Southern Utah over the weekend. The honor is the third earned by a Bronco from the MRGC this season. Perkins, a junior from Las Vegas, Nev., recorded individual titles on vault and bars with career-best scores on each event. She added a third title on fl oor, tying teammates Kelsey Morris and Kelsey Black with a on the event. The University of Denver s Moriah Martin recorded the highest all-around score of earning the MRGC Gymnast of the Week honor. Boise State junior Ciera Perkins led the No. 15-ranked Boise State gymnastics team earned its fi fth win of the season Friday night, topping Southern Utah at Taco Bell Arena. The Las Vegas native earned wins on vault, uneven bars and fl oor exercise to lead her team to a 2-0 record against the Thunderbirds this season. Perkins collected career-best scores of on both vault and bars, earning her fourth-career and sixth-career wins, respectively. Her six career wins on bars ties her for 10th in all-time career bars wins at Boise State, while her score ties her for the seventh-best bars score in school history. Perkins also earned a on fl oor exercise, tying her career-best score. Junior Kelsey Morris shared the fl oor title with Perkins and Kelsey Black, each earning season-best totals with their scores. Morris also picked up the all-around title with a total, a career-best performance. Black s win marks her sixth-career title on fl oor, tying the ninth spot for career fl oor wins at Boise State. Amanda Otuafi scored a to fi nish in second on vault, while Black and Maddie Krentz tied for fourth with 9.80 scores. Morris placed eighth (9.725), while Krystine Jacobsen tied for 10th (9.675) for the Broncos. Morris followed Perkins on bars, placing second with a score. Leading a young lineup on beam, Jacobsen, a sophomore, took the lead for the Broncos, placing third (9.825), while freshman Paige Urquhart placed fourth (9.775). Freshmen Diana Mejia and Brooke Graham were joined by Morris, a junior, to tie for sixth (9.725), while Marissa Wossner rounded out the lineup with a (12th). In the fi nal rotation Perkins, Morris and Black led the Broncos to their best team total on fl oor this season. The all-time record between Boise State and Southern Utah improves to 30-20, with Boise State holding the advantage. The Broncos scored a team total of , topping DU s and BYU s scores in front of a crowd of 3,393 at Taco Bell Arena. The attendance was the third-largest at a Boise State Beauty and the Beast event. Three Broncos captured individual titles on the night with Kelsey Morris taking the all-around win while also tying with Ciera Perkins for a win on the uneven bars. Perkins also collected a win on fl oor exercise and Amanda Otuafi added a win on vault. The Broncos opened the night on vault earning a team total. Otuafi led the team with a score of 9.90, earning her sixth-career win on vault. Perkins followed just behind with a score and a second-place fi n- ish while Maddie Krentz tied her career-best of to tie for third. Kelsey Black placed seventh (9.80), Morris tied for eighth (9.750) and Paige Urquhart tied for 11th (9.725) to round out the Broncos lineup on vault. Helping the Broncos to a team bars score, Perkins earned her fi rst win of the night in the second rotation, sharing her fi fth-career uneven bars title with Morris, who earned her third-career win on the event. THIS WEEK IN BOISE STATE GYMNASTICS: The 11th-ranked Boise State gymnastics team hosts No. 14 Denver and No. 23 BYU in the 12th Annual Beauty and the Beast meet, Friday, Jan. 17 at Taco Bell Arena. The triangular will be held alongside the No. 21 Boise State men s wrestling match against No. 23 North Dakota State. ABOUT BEAUTY AND THE BEAST: Boise State was the fi rst school in the nation to host a Beauty and the Beast competition where gymnastics and wrestling compete side-by-side. The tradition began in 2003 and has grown into a national favorite as many other schools have added the same type of meet. The Broncos began their Beauty and the Beast tradition on Feb. 14, 2003, a fi tting event for Valentine s Day. Boise State wrestling came away with a 35-9 win over Portland State, while the gymnastics team picked up a win over BYU in front of a crowd of 2,350 fans. Beauty and the Beast is now in its 12th season and will hold its 13th event at Boise State. The competition was missed during the 2008 season and two competitions were held in In 2009 a Beauty and the Beast meet was held, but the gymnasts competed in an intrasquad competition rather than against an opponent. Bronco wrestling holds a 12-1 record in home Beauty 2014 Broncos Page 16 and the Beast competitions, while the gymnastics program holds an 11-1 record all-time.
