Rec Hall Livestats: The Big Ten Championships Michigan State will compete at the 2007 Big Ten Championship Meet at Penn State this weekend. Minnesota captured the 2006 title, snapping a string of seven-straight Michigan wins at the event. The Wolverines have dominated the Championships, winning 13 of the last 15 titles. Michigan State fi nished second at the meet last season, its highest fi nish since the 1996 campaign. The Top Five Here are the top fi ve things you need to know about the Michigan State gymnastics team heading in to the Big Ten Championship Meet 1. Spartan senior Kristen Coleman has won the all-around competition fi ve times this season. She twice set the Spartan benchmark in that category, most recently against Western Michigan with a The MSU freshman class has accounted for 43 top-three individual event fi nishes this season. Leading the way is Rochelle Robinson with fi ve victories on vault, while Nicole Curler has two fi rst-place fi nishes on beam, and three on the fl oor exercise. 3. Rochelle Robinson scored the fi rst perfect 10.0 in Michigan State history on vault at the Fox Run Invitational on Feb. 10. She is one of fi ve gymnasts across the nation to record a perfect score on vault this season. 4. At least two freshmen have competed in each rotation for the Spartans this season. The exception falls in the all-around competition, where only one freshman competed on all four events in the season opener versus Arizona, against Illinois, and most recently versus Michigan. 5. Michigan State has been ranked among the nation s top 25 teams in nine of the 11 weeks of the GymInfo Top 25 Poll, including a preseason ranking at No. 22. National Spotlight Entering postseason competition the Spartans are ranked 19th in the March 26 GymInfo Top 25 Poll. At this point in the season, the GymInfo Top 25 Poll is based on team and individual RQS (Regional Qualifying Score) scores. An RQS score is generated from a team or individual s top six regular-season scores, with three scores coming from away meets. MSU s top road score occurred on March 18 at Western Michigan with a , while its top home score of the season, a , came at the State of Michigan Classic on Feb. 3. Individual Notoriety In the March 26 individual national rankings, senior tumbler Kristen Coleman is seventh in the all-around with a season RQS average of Coleman also ranks in the national top 25 on the balance beam (8th, 9.885) and uneven bars (t-19th, 9.885). Freshmen Nicole Curler and Rochelle Robinson also rank among the national elite. Curler ranks 25th on the fl oor exercise with a season RQS of 9.875, and Robinson is eighth on vault with a Conference First For the fi rst time in the history of the Big Ten Championships, six teams enter the event ranked in the national top 25. Penn State heads the group, ranked 12th overall with Michigan close behind at 13. Michigan State, who fi nished second last year at the Big Ten Championships, is ranked 19th in the nation ( ), followed by No. 20 Ohio State ( ), No. 21 Illinois ( ) and No. 23, defending Big Ten Champion Minnesota ( ). Past Big Ten Champions Michigan State has had 10 Big Ten Champions in its history. MSU has had two vault, four uneven bar, fi ve balance beam and two fl oor exercise champions. A Spartan gymnast has never won the all-around competition at the Big Ten Championship Meet. Michelle Ingalls won three individual event titles during the 1988 season. She took fi rst on the uneven bar, balance beam and fl oor exercise events. Current senior Chayla Hill tied for fi rst-place honors on the vault during the 2006 season, marking the fi rst MSU Big Ten Champion since the 1996 campaign. Spartan Honor Roll After not receiving a Big Ten Gymnast of the Week honoree since the 2005 season, Michigan State has earned the honor fi ve times in Kristen Coleman and Rochelle Robinson have won the weekly award twice, and Nicole Curler garnered the honor once this season for the Green and White. Coleman is the most recent recipient. She broke her own all-around school record, previously set on Jan. 27 (39.525), posting a against Western Michigan on March 18. Coleman won her fi rst weekly league laurel on Jan. 31 for her record-breaking performance at the Jan. 27 Flip For The Cure Meet. Coleman set a new Spartan benchmark with a in the all-around competition, adding fi rst-place fi nishes on the bars (9.950) and balance beam (9.850), while she tied with Curler for fi rst place on the fl oor exercise (9.850). Rochelle Robinson garnered her fi rst career Gymnast of the Week honor on Feb. 7 for her outstanding performance at the State of Michigan Classic on Feb. 3. She claimed top honors on vault and fl oor exercise with a pair of scores, and also matched teammate Kristen Coleman s fi rst-place fi nish on the uneven bars with a mark of Robinson helped the Spartans claim the State of Michigan Classic team title, their fi rst since the 2003 season. Robinson earned her second Gymnast of the Week accolade after becoming the fi rst gymnast in Michigan State history to record a perfect score when she posted a 10.0 on vault at the Fox Run Invitational on Feb. 10. She also claimed second place in the all-around competition with a Robinson currently holds the top three vault scores on the MSU all-time record chart. Curler earned her fi rst-career Big Ten Gymnast of the Week honor on Jan. 17. Curler picked up the weekly honor after winning both the balance beam (9.925) and fl oor exercise (9.875), while also tying for fi rst in the all-around against No. 16 Arizona on Jan. 12. The Bay City, Mich., native tied with teammate Kristen Coleman in the all-around competition, tallying a mark of Curler helped MSU achieve its highest team mark on the uneven bars since the 2000 season and the third-highest in Spartan history (49.325). Record Breaker - Again! Senior tumbler Kristen Coleman broke the all-around school record for the second time this season, posting a in a dual meet with Western Michigan on March 18. Coleman now holds the top two all-around spots in MSU history, as she recorded the previous high (39.525) earlier this year at the Jan. 27 Flip For The Cure Meet.

3 Freshman Firsts Freshman Megan Bergland captured the fi rst individual event title of her career on the uneven bars (9.900) versus Michigan on March 3. Her score matched the third-highest mark for a Spartan on the event this season. She competed in her fi rst career all-around competition against West Virginia on Feb. 23, stepping in for injured teammate Rochelle Robinson. The Richland, Mich., native posted a season high on vault (9.625) and scored a to fi nish fourth in the all-around against the Mountaineers. History Maker Rochelle Robinson s perfect 10.0 on vault at the Fox Run Invitational on Feb. 10 marked the fi rst fl awless score ever recorded by a Spartan gymnast. The Chesapeake, Va., native now holds the top three spots on the all-time vault list. She set the previous Spartan benchmark with a at the Flip For the Cure Meet on Jan. 27. Kudos All-Around Michigan State swept the top three spots in the all-around competition just one time this season. Kristen Coleman won her third straight all-around title with a , while Robinson (38.875) and Katlyn Roggensack (38.775) fi nished second and third, respectively, at the Fox Run Invitational on Feb. 10. Three Strong Freshman Rochelle Robinson claimed three individual titles at the prestigious State of Michigan Classic on Feb. 3. She claimed top honors on the vault and fl oor exercise with a pair of 9.925s, while matching teammate Kristen Coleman for fi rst place on the uneven bars with a mark of Injury Report Spartan senior Chayla Hill competed in just one meet this season as the result of a recurring shoulder injury. Junior Bethany Little also competed in a limited number of meets this season due to an ankle injury, and Rhiannon Banda-Scott returned from injury midway through the year. Head Coach Kathie Klages Kathie Klages is in her 17th season at the helm of the Michigan State gymnastics program in She is a three-time Big Ten Coach of the Year award winner, and has been named Central Region Coach of the Year four times. Klages teams have been consistently successful, as she has posted a winning record in each of her previous 16 seasons leading the Green and White. In 2006, Klages guided MSU to a second-place fi nish at the Big Ten Championship Meet, mentored the 10th Big Ten individual event champion in school history (Chayla Hill, vault) and led State to its 15th appearance in NCAA Regional competition. Scoring Rundown Unlike other collegiate athletic rankings, collegiate gymnastic rankings are not based on wins and losses or votes. Gymnastic teams are ranked by their meet scores alone. Teams are ranked by their highest score during the opening portion of the season and are then ranked by their total season average. The teams fi nish the dual-meet season ranked by their Regional Qualifying Score (RQS). A RQS is based on a team s top six regular-season scores, with three scores coming from away meets. To obtain the RQS, the team s or gymnast s highest score is dropped and the remaining fi ve scores are averaged. Spartan Gymnastics Signs Two For 2008 Two gymnasts have signed National Letters of Intent to attend Michigan State, beginning with the 2007 fall semester. Nicole Argiros (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson High School/Michigan Academy of Gymnastics) and Kathryn Mahoney (Western Spring, Ill./Lyons Township High School/Illinois Gymnastics Institute) will don the Green and White for the 2008 season. 4 Event-By-Event - Keep an eye on... Vault Spartan freshman Rochelle Robinson has been the teamleader on vault throughout the season. She enters the championship portion of the season ranked eighth in the nation, and is the top-ranked vaulter in the conference with a RQS. She is one of fi ve gymnasts from across the country to record a perfect 10.0 on vault this season. Robinson has won, or shared fi rst-place honors on vault fi ve times, including her pefect 10.0 at the Fox Run Invitational on Feb. 10, and a solid at the prestigious State of Michigan Classic in early February. Watch for senior leaders Kristen Coleman and Victoria Iakounina as key components of the Spartan vault rotation. Coleman ranks ninth in the Big Ten with a season RQS of 9.830, while Iakounina has been a four-year contributor on the event for the Green and White. Uneven Bars Senior Kristen Coleman ranks tied for 19th in the nation, and second in the conference with a season RQS of on the uneven bars. She has won, or shared fi rst-place honors on the event four times, including a career-best mark of to fi nish fi rst at the Flip For the Cure Meet in late January. Also keep an eye on freshman standouts Rochelle Robinson and Megan Bergland on the uneven bars. Both have one fi rst-place fi nish to their credit on the event entering the Big Ten Championship Meet. Balance Beam Veteran Kristen Coleman and freshman tumbler Nicole Curler have led the Spartan balance beam rotation in Coleman ranks eighth in the nation, and is the top-ranked beam participant in the conference with a season RQS of Coleman has won, or shared fi rst-place honors on the event four times. Curler is fourth in the conference on the balance beam with a season RQS of She has won or shared fi rst-place honors four times this season. Curler was the 2005 Junior Olympic National Champion on the balance beam. Also keep an eye on veteran Victoria Iakounina, sophomore Katlyn Roggensack and Rochelle Robinson on the balance beam. Floor Exercise Nicole Curler ranks 25th in the nation and second in the Big Ten with a season RQS of on the fl oor exercise. She has won or shared fi rst-place honors on the event four times this season, including a career-best against then-no. 2 Florida in March. Kristen Coleman ranks third in the Big Ten with a season RQS of and will also be an important aspect of the Spartan fl oor exercise rotation. Sophomore Katlyn Roggensack is 23rd in the conference with a season RQS of All-Around Kristen Coleman leads the Spartan all-arounders with a seventh-place national ranking and is the top competitor in the Big Ten with a season RQS of Coleman broke the MSU all-around school record twice this season, most recently with an impressive against Western Michigan in March. Kristen Coleman (39.200) and Nicole Curler (39.050) took second and third, respectively, in the allaround as State s top fi nishers at the event. Coleman posted a on the balance beam to capture MSU s lone individual fi rst-place fi nish against the Mountaineers. Freshman all-arounder Rochelle Robinson did not compete due to an injury she suffered in preparation for the weekend event. Illinois Dual Rochelle Robinson was the only Spartan tumbler to garner an individual fi rst-place fi nish (9.850, vault) in a loss to fellow Big Ten competitor Illinois on Feb. 17. MSU s Kristen Coleman tied for second as the top Spartan fi nisher on the uneven bars with a 9.800, Robinson fi nished tied for third on the balance beam with a season-high 9.750, and Coleman and Robinson matched scores of to fi nish tied for second on the fl oor exercise.
