Coming off its highest score of the season, the Michigan State gymnastics team is set to take on conference foes at the 2014 Big Ten Gymnastics Championships in State College, Pa. Hosted by Penn State University, the Spartans will compete in the first session with Iowa, Michigan and Ohio State on Saturday, March 22 at 12 p.m. inside Rec Hall. Big Ten Championship History The Spartans have 10 individual Big Ten Champions in MSU history, with the last being Chayla Hill on vault in Michigan State has never won the team conference title. Since the Big Ten sanctioned women s gymnastics in 1982, MSU has finished a programhigh second place a total of eight times with the last runnerup finish coming on March 25, 2006 with a score of Last season, MSU placed seventh overall with a score of , with Taira Neal and Lisa Burt named to the AllChampionship team. Last Time Out The Spartans hosted a Big Ten Quad meet with Nebraska, Illinois and Ohio State on Saturday, finishing third overall with a team total of It marks the highest score for MSU since beating New Hampshire on March 9, 2008 and ties the 10thbest score in program history (at LSU on Feb. 29, 2008). Alina Cartwright and Lisa Burt each posted a to lead MSU on the balance beam to a team average of , tying for its best average on the day. It marked Cartwright s career high and was a seasonbest score for Burt. The Spartans also earned a score of on the bars, their highest on the event this season. The score tied for 25thbest bars score in school history (last vs. Penn State on Feb. 23, 2013). MSU was paced by a seasonhigh by Burt, who finished third overall. Dani Levy led the Spartans on the floor, matching her careerbest score of 9.875, to help earn a team average of Michigan State finished with a team score of on the vault, led again by Levy with a In the allaround competition, Burt and Cartwright took third and fourth, respectively. 2 Cartwright Earns FirstTeam AllBig Ten Honors Alina Cartwright was voted to the AllBig Ten FirstTeam, as announced by the conference office on Tuesday. It is the first AllBig Ten recognition for the Naperville, Ill., native, and she is the first Spartan to be named to the first team since assistant coach Nicole Curler earned the honor in Named a Big Ten Gymnast to Watch for 2014, Cartwright has been a leader for the Spartans throughout the season. She won the allaround crown in three meets in 2014, and recently notched a careerhigh score of to place fourth at the Big Ten Quad Meet on Saturday. Cartwright has also posted four individual wins on the vault, recording a careerbest score of against Penn State to tie for third alltime in the MSU record books. Her personalbest score of on beam at the Big Ten Quad Meet on Saturday also gave her firstplace honors on the event for the third time this season. MSU in the Rankings The Spartans are currently tied for 38th in the GymInfo national rankings with a Regional Qualifying Score (RQS) of MSU is tied for No. 27 with a RQS on the balance beam of , while the team s floor exercise RQS of is tied for 37th. Both scores are also the sixth and ninthbest, respectively, in the central region. Individually, Alina Cartwright is seventh in the Big Ten with her allaround RQS of and her average score of on the vault is tied for 25th in the nation. In the conference, her vault score is tied for the fifthbest average this season and she is seventh in the regional allaround rankings. 3 Kathie Klages is in her 24th season as head coach of the Michigan State gymnastics program. Klages has instilled a consistent mentality with the Spartans, having posted a winning record in 20 of her 23 seasons leading the Green and White. A threetime Big Ten Coach of the Year, she has been named Central Region Coach of the Year four times. Klages has had 109 studentathletes on the NACGC/W Scholar Americans list over her 22 years at the helm of MSU, as well as 116 Academic AllBig Ten selections. The Kathie Klages File Prior to becoming the fourth women s gymnastics coach in MSU history, Klages spent five successful years as the assistant coach of Great Lakes Gymnastics in Lansing. During her tenure, she coached the 1990 Level 10 Olympic National Champion, 20 state championship teams, numerous national qualifiers and former Spartan greats Kim Hartwick and Michelle Ingalls. In 1988, she was named the United States Gymnastics Federation (USGF) Coach of the Year in Michigan. A member of the National Association of Women s Gymnastics Judges since 1978, Klages is also a national judge. Before coaching at Great Lakes, Klages was the head coach of Blue Lakes Gymnastics in Muskegon for two years (198385). She also served a twoyear stint as head coach at Spring Lake High School (197981). A native of Spring Lake, Mich., Klages is a member of USA Gymnastics, the National Association of Women s Gymnastics Judges, United States Elite Coaches Association and the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians. Klages also directs the gymnastics summer camp at MSU.
