Aceves Greetings from your Exalted Ruler. I cannot believe a month has passed as things are moving quickly. The month of April was action packed with various activities and meetings. My thanks to all those who helped make these activities run smooth? Speaking of smooth, thanks to all those who helped with the Fourth Avenue Street Fair AEMP booth and our House Committee is in full swing. Please continue to support our Lodge and let us k n o w when you can volunteer your time for your favorite Elks Charity. All volunteers are welcome! We are still looking for someone to fill the Lodge Esquire and Chaplin officer vacancies and some committee spots as well. The May activities will be on us quickly. We have the May Youth Banquet, Memorial Day, Cinco de Mayo food and fun. Our very own Trustee Abram and his wife Georgina will be fixing up some goodies. We have the Mother s Day Ceremony starting at 11:30 am with a brunch immediately after. Let s not forget and start planning for the annual country Hoedown big fund-raiser for ENF, which is Saturday, June 18th. All activities are very important so please place them on your calendars. As these functions may change start times, please check the weekly blasts for the actual start times. Due to family and personal matters, your officer corps has opted not to join in the May ritual competition, but Tucson Lodge 385 will be represented at the May Arizona State Convention. Until next time, stay healthy, build membership and let s fill the lodge. ER John B. Aceves OFFICE MONDAY - FRIDAY 8AM - 5PM LOUNGE TUESDAY - FRIDAY 4:00 TO CLOSE.

5 Elks Lodge #385 Veterans Committee Report By Teen Morgan As I approach the gates of heaven; St. Peter I will tell; One more soldier reporting sir; I've served my time in hell. -Mark Anthony Gresswell Memorial Day is a good time to reflect on the sacrifices and services of the American soldiers and veterans and the U.S. military men and women. The American military is, has always been and will always recruit the best and finest of the crop of young men and women of the country and we will continue to shower them with appreciation, support and prayers, as we have always done. Memorial Day is just an opportunity for us to express the special places they have in the hearts of American citizens and more by honoring the people who work in the various branches of the military. We all do not celebrate Memorial Day on the same day or call it the same name. But any way you look at it, it is a day to remember the past and the future. In 1971, Memorial Day was declared a national holiday by the Congress, who designated the last Monday in May as the day for its observance. Many states observe separate Confederate Memorial Days. Mississippi observes it on the last Monday of April, Alabama on the fourth Monday of April, Georgia on April 26, North and South Carolina on May 10 and Louisiana and Tennessee on June 3. In Tennessee, the day is named as 'Confederate Decorations Day' while Texas observes 'Confederate Heroes Day' on January 19. In Virginia, Memorial Day is better known as 'May Confederate Memorial Day.' On the last Monday of May our lodge will be celebrating Memorial Day with the Veterans from the VA. It s a wonderful day to come out and say thank you. Bring the kids too. They enjoy seeing families. We have planned a wonderful picnic. So come down and enjoy the day with us. Upcoming: Collecting clothing and household items for Homeless Veterans. Please mark the bag or box so that I know it goes to the Veterans. Clean Soda Can drive... It helps put the cash into our account to help the veterans.
6 HOUSE COMMITTEE NEWS by Committee Chairman Jim Sanford. A New Corps of Officers has been installed and our Exalted Ruler John Aceves has appointed a few new members to the House Committee. My self, Bob Holyoak, Sandi Mittelstaedt, Matilda Lopez, and Lori Moore all were re-appointed and four new members were added: Coralie Lim, Joe Jablonski, Paul Craven and Nancy Turner. Any ideas that you have please contact one of the above. Our meetings are held on the first Tuesday of each Month about 5:30 pm. Come and join us and learn what it takes to keep the Lodge running smoothly. Lots of activity for the Month of May. We start with the Youth Banquet on May 1st at 2PM. The Lodge will be giving out Scholarships to our area s High School students along with musical instruments. A light meal will follow this program. May 5th Cinco De Mayo evening with some great Authentic Mexican food, prepared by Georgina and Abram Lares. Eating begins at 5:30 pm with a charge of $8 dollars a plate. May 8th will be the Mothers Day Program starting at 11:30 am. A light brunch will be served after the 30 minute program. May 12th beginning at 5:30 will be movie night where $5 dollars gets you hot dogs, popcorn and the movie Minions. May 19th will be Pizza Night Beginning at 5:30 with all you can eat salad and pizza for $8 dollars. May 30th the Lodge s Memorial Day Picnic starting at noon to 2pm. Besides salads, dessert, brats, burgers and chicken for $8 dollars our Veterans from the VA Hospital will be with us. Come down and keep them company; they love to have new faces about to converse with. That s it for May but I would like you to mark June 18th down for the yearly Hoe Down put on by Laura Young. She has acquired the band Black Jack to play. Ribs, beans, Cole slaw, corn, corn bread and dessert for $20 dollars. $5 dollars of this plus profits from raffle sales and the jail bail goes to Elks National Foundation.
7 Crafty Critters Report By Teen Morgan Attendance has gone up as the word gets out that we are here on Tuesday nights to have fun and learn new ways of doing projects. The blankets are so beautiful our Veterans Hospital, VA Homeless program and Steele Foundation will be thrilled to receive them. Thanks to Dioney Evans, Darcy Ross, Kristine, Sherry and Joanna Zappia for making blankets this last month. For the Memorial Day picnic, May 30th we will be giving patriot mug rugs with a coffee mug to the Veterans from the VA hospital. Making these rugs will be a fun event. Pattern is easy. This summer we will have a tour of the Steele Foundation here in Tucson. The more I learn about it the more I want to do for them. These are children with varying diagnoses from cancer, autism, diabetes, asthma, etc. We have been sending in baby blankets and preemie hats along with burp towels for the preemies. Remember Tuesday night from 6 to 8 PM come down and join us. You never know what refreshments we ll be serving. No dues just come. MOTHER S DAY CEREMONY Don t forget Mother s Day May 8, 2016 Our annual Mother s Day Ceremony will be at 11:30 am on Sunday May 8th. Brunch will follow
