1 Mystic Carvers Club P. O. Box 71 Mystic, CT April 2017 The purpose of this organization is to: stimulate interest in carving as a hobby or a profession and as an art form. Our goal is to provide instruction in carving and to aid others in the practice of carving. The next carving session and regular meeting April 30, 2017 at the Quiambaug Fire House, 50 Old Stonington Rd. Stonington, CT. The Fire House will be open at 10:00 AM for anyone working on his or her project or wishing to carve along with the novice leader (see schedule). The club s show and tell table is set up each month so bring in your carvings to share with others. We are all interested in seeing your work. If you have anything you d like to share with your club members, please let Dennis know and he will set it up. Check out our Web Dennis Taylor will be the April Novice leader. He will be teaching a little Wood Spirit. We thank John Harris for being the novice leader in March. He showed novice carvers how to carve a bird in a cage. Thanks John. I hope we get to see some finished pieces at the April meeting. Request: Please bring single dollar bills to class so leaders will not have to make change. Thank you!
2 I wanted to let you all know that we lost another one of our club members. Ed Frink passed away in January. I received an from his wife. She says she has lots of carving supplies to sell and she will be getting back to me to set up a time when anyone interested in Ed s carving supplies can go and take a look at what she has to sell. I will give you more information when she gets back to me. Our deepest sympathy goes out to Mrs. Frink and her family. We have two new members this month, welcome to Gary Goeschel from Franklin, CT and from Enders Island: Brother Evagrius Hayden. At the March meeting Dennis Tormey informed the club that there will not be a club Retreat in October this year. The facility went way up on their prices. Too high for us to be able to participate! Dennis has a contract with a new location, still in Rhode Island. Right now there will be a Carving Retreat in Dennis will have more information in the near future. There will be no Mystic Wood Carvers Club Retreat in There will be a Columbus Day Retreat next year. The dates will be Friday October 5th - Monday, October 8th, We will hold that Retreat at Camp Canonicus, 54 Exeter Rd., Exeter, R.I. Pictures of that Camp can be found on the Mystic Woodcarvers Facebook page. Several sites were explored, none could accommodate us for the Columbus Day weekend this year. Change is inevitable, and sometimes disappointing. We hope you can bear with us and return in Camp Canonicus has promise..and real beds! Thank you, Dennis Tormey, Carol Roffey, Ray Johnson Hello fellow carvers, I have updated the club s website to include new pictures of Camp Canonicus, the site of the 2018 Woodcarver s Retreat in New England. Please take some time to review them and let other carvers you know that the pictures are available on the club s website. Thanks, Dennis Mary Brown talked about her Mayflower Project. Most carvers have completed their relief carvings. Mary needs them all turned in to her in May. They need to all be stained and finished at the same time by one person so they all come out looking the same. Mary has recruited Ray Johnson and Warren Blessing to complete the pieces so talk to Mary at the April meeting so she knows that you are done or almost done with the piece you are working on. Thanks to all who participated. The pieces I have seen so far are just beautiful. I hope we all get to see it when it is done. Mary, you did a Great job organizing
3 this project we will all have to drive up to Plymouth Mass to get a look at it! A reminder, Mary has asked all the carvers to hand in an autobiography along with their carvings. Talk to Mary if you have any questions. At the last meeting Bob mentioned that there will be some WORD changes to the Club Constitution. Please read them, the changes are in Red, anything in Green is the old wording that will be taken out of the Constitution. We will be voting the new changes at the April meeting.
