Jim s Jabber by Jim Keehan - President Most of you have seen the notice that we sent about the sudden change in our monthly meeting place. For several years we have been meeting at Addolorata Villa in Wheeling. Last week all that changed and we can no longer use their facilities for our meetings. Apparently, there was a change in the corporate philosophy. I do not believe that the Club was singled out for any reason. Just a change in policy. We have found a new place for our meetings, thanks to Mike McGee. Starting with the upcoming June 18 th meeting, we will be meeting at the St. Thomas of Villanova School in Palatine at 1141 E. Anderson Dr. The meetings will continue to start at 7:00 p.m. messages have been sent out to inform the members of this new location. If you know that one of your friends doesn t have , call him up to get the word out. We have finally purchased a new buddy box cord that will fit the new Futaba radios with the square connector, and on the other end the round connector of the Club s buddy box. I am sorry that this took so long for you new members that have the new style Futaba radio, but we are good to go now. Whether you have the old style or the new style Futaba radio, the Club can supply the cord and buddy box. Let s have FUN and be SAFE. The entrance is at the west end of the school. There will be signs there showing you the way to the room. Before each meeting we may need to arrange the chairs, as we did at the Villa, for our meeting. At the end of the meeting, we need to put everything back as we found it. (A small price to pay for using the space.) We hope to see you there at 7:00 p.m. on Monday June 18th and every month thereafter. SIG Fly-In Pictures See pages 7-8 for more. People, planes, tents. 3 June 2007 Volume 14 Issue 6 Page 3 MEETING MINUTES by Murry Randell, Secretary Blue MAX R/C Flying Club May Meeting Notes Meeting Date: May 21, 2007 Secretary: Murry Randell Jim Keehan called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.p. on May 21, Welcome Guests Young Mi McKay, Del Peral, Aviv Shoval, Alex Shulkin and Bradford Walters. Around the Hangar Jim asked members who need name badges to list their names as they want them to appear on the badge. The annual SIG Fly-In will be held on June 9th and 10th in Montezuma, Iowa. The Gas Club picnic will on July 21st at the field. Please respect their time and try not to fly before 2:00 p.m. on that day. We will be restarting the Ground Crew, which will be headed by Jim Keehan. The group will check set-up and construction of student airplanes, taking some of the load off the instructors, leaving them more time to teach. Secretary s report: Murry Randell- The minutes were accepted as published in the newsletter. Treasurer's report: Duane Lang- Our account balance is $ The report was accepted. Committee reports: Banquet: No report. Field - Gene Zerega- Calls have been placed to other clubs to see how the grass is cut at their fields. Don brought up the subject of starter stands. Saw horses used by some members have been blowing over with the possibility of injury and damage to airplanes. Gene and Rudy will organize construction of two stands. Fun Fly Pete Sidor The May 20 event was cancelled due to rain and rescheduled for May 27. Newsletter Don Linder- Let Don know if any member would like an article or other information placed in the newsletter. Noise - Frank Stillson- Frank reminded members of the close proximity of the condominiums east of the field. It is essential to use good mufflers and to exercise proper prop selection. Picnic Tim Neimeic- The picnic will be held on August 19th with a rain date on August 26th. Donations for prizes would be welcomed. Tim is not reserving the grove, avoiding the need for a permit. Proficiency Ron Petterec - Ron explained the club s proficiency levels. It is mandatory to pass the solo pilot test to fly without an instructor. Ryan Weinberg, pictured here on the right, moved up to intermediate pilot. Congratulations, Ryan! Program - Mike- A club swap meet would be a good idea. Tim suggested it be held at the end of the flying season. Refreshments - Thanks again to Carl.
4 June 2007 Volume 14 Issue 6 Page 4 Safety - Carl Will- New member s planes need to be checked before starting engines. Never fly alone. Buddy box is a must. Planes should not be assembled in the parking lot to avoid accidentally turning on transmitters. Paul recommended replacing transmitter antennas after 2 years. Exposed servo wires should be examined for melting of the plastic covering by fuel. Yohay: Pilots must respect the centerline of the runway and avoid flying too close to the pits and the flight line. Old Business 1. Jim The Club Somethin Extra will be raffled at the picnic. 2. Paul Barsamian was presented with a certificate for a program presentation and a plaque for serving on the Board of Directors last year. Thanks for your contributions, Paul. New on the Radar No new business. Unhappy Landings No Reports. New on the Runway Yohay Hahamy - Ezer Wietzman s IAF black Spitfire. Rich Frost - Playboy electric in red, white, and blue. At left: Robert and Robie Creek with their Hangar 9 PTS Mustang they will be using to learn to fly.

Steve Haas won a Hobbico Radio case. Pilot s Briefing Many thanks to Tim McKay. He has been an aircraft modeler since he was ten, and has been flying radio controlled model aircraft for the past 35 years. Tim was on active duty with the US Air Force for 27 years, from 1978 to 2005, as a Navigator and Electronic Warfare Officer, and flew in the F-4 "Phantom," EC- 130H "Compass Call," and E-8C "Joint STARS" aircraft. His presentation on his Air Force career was both interesting and informative. He pointed out the many different career opportunities in the Air Force. The meeting adjourned at 8:50 p.m.

Due to bad weather on the 20 th, it was held on May 27. The June Fun-Fly will be held on June 17. The event is Mail Run. You put a letter on your plane. Spot take off and landing for points. Take off, do a roll and a loop, land, bring your letter to the bench. Time stops. The letter contains + and points that are added to your score. Noise is a major concern at the Deer Grove Flying Field so as an incentive to quiet down our planes, bonus percentages are added to your score. Planes over 100 db are prohibited from flying in the Fun-Fly. Decibel readings are taken at the beginning of each Fun-Fly and AMA cards may be checked. Proficiency Ron Petterec As the flying season picks up steam we should all be working on our flying skills. I will be looking at the roster to see who should be trying to move up from soloist to intermediate and from intermediate to advanced. We don t all have to be aerobatic aces, but practicing a few maneuvers will give you a better chance of saving your plane in unexpected conditions, like gusting winds or engine out. - Ron For Sale Giant Scale SE5-A with a U.S. Engines 41cc. gasoline engine. Built by the master modeler, Al Rychlik. Has all servos, ready to fly. This is a phenomenal model. Wing span is 72 inches; length is 60 inches. It flies well. 7 June 2007 Volume 14 Issue 6 Page 7 SIG Fly-In Ron Petterec, Gene Zerega Many local people attended the annual SIG fly-in at the SIG Manufacturing facilities in Montezuma, Iowa. Ron Petterec, Herb Rizzo, Barry Schilling, Carl Will, Duane Lang, Greg and Steve Tomczyk, Rudy Krolopp, and Gene Zerega. It was really windy on Thursday and Friday, so not too much flying was done. Friday evening the wind calmed down to allow night flying of the Tiger Moth fleet. Saturday the weather was great. Fun-fly events were egg drop and touch-and-go musical chairs. Ron presented a certificate to SIG from Bluemax in appreciation of support and prize donations throughout the years. Ron has all these little Tiger Moths lined up. Herb and Barry like to have a few spares. Here is night flying. Ron s Mayhem, Four Star, three Somethin Extras. Duane s Mayhem, Twist, Cub and Extra 300. Duane pulled a trailer for camping at the field. New at SIG are a razorback Mustang in green, and the WACO SRE still waiting for delivery. Balsa wood is in short supply. Very little merchandise was in stock at the factory. Ron Petterec Here are Gene Zerega s report and pictures. Rudy and I arrived at the airfield in Montezuma, IA early Friday afternoon. The flying field was located on Hazel Sigafoose's (wife of the former owner and founder of SIG Mfg.) property approximately eight miles outside of town. All day Friday was open flying and there were no scheduled events. The SIG sponsored events and contests all took place on Saturday. Blue Max was well represented. See names above in Ron s report. Friday evening Ron, Barry, and Herb, put on a light show in the dark with their lighted 17" Tiger Moths.
8 June 2007 Volume 14 Issue 6 Page 8 [In open flying there were demonstrations of 4 or 5 guys flying Somethin Extras together, not exactly in formation, but going around and looping at the same time. People brought canopies for shade and lined up their planes.] In the first of the contests, a hard boiled egg was placed in a cup mounted on top of the fuselage. The intent was to drop the egg as close as possible to a fixed target on the field. The winner of that contest was Blue Max's own Ron Petterec. (It was VERY important to watch the plane and not the egg after you dropped it. Carl, sorry for your loss. -Editor.) The second contest was similar to musical chairs, except the object was NOT to be the last man to successfully Touch-and-Go. Once again Ron P. came within seconds of also winning that contest, but he had to settle for second place. Hat's Off to Ron. Mid Saturday afternoon, to everyone's surprise, a late 1930's full scale Stearman landed on the flying field, and a few hours later took off trailing smoke. I have included two pictures. Gene Zerega
