Holy Cross Catholic Primary School Newsletter 19th July Payments to school for dinners, school trips, uniform, clubs, etc. It would be most helpful if all dinner money could be sent in on Mondays for the coming week, in a sealed envelope, marked with the child's name and class, the days dinner is required and the amount enclosed, please. All other payments should also be sent in, when necessary, in marked envelopes as for dinner money. Any change required will be returned to your child. Please could all outstanding debts be settled before the end of term as school has to pay their bills!! Thank you, Hilary Key Stage 1 enjoyed a fascinating trip to the 'Sunken Secrets' exhibition at Fort Victoria on Friday 7th June - and the sun came out for us despite the torrential downpours at the start of the day! The children found out about the job of a marine archaeologist, and handled a range of interesting artefacts before visiting the museum and finding out about the history of the western Solent and some of the items that have been found on the seabed. After our picnic, we enjoyed making our new discoveries while hunting for fossils on the beach. A great day - and huge thanks to all of the volunteers who accompanied us on the day. Jack. The horse in the field adjacent to the car park has been poorly of late, and the lady who looks after him has asked that parents DO NOT allow their children to feed the horse under any circumstances. The lady has asked us to point out that some of the plants near to the field (such as yew and broom) can in fact be deadly poisonous to a horse, or at the very least give them severe colic - so while she understands that the children enjoy talking to him and being friendly, please do not give him anything to eat! Thank you!

Lost Uniform. We seem to be missing several items of school uniform in Year 1 at the moment which have not turned up in Lost Property.

With the warmer weather, jumpers are being taken off much more frequently - and have a habit of getting left on the field at the end of a happy lunchtime, despite the best efforts of staff to keep

2 Lost Uniform. We seem to be missing several items of school uniform in Year 1 at the moment which have not turned up in Lost Property. Please could you kindly check any items that you have lurking in the washing basket to check that they belong to your own child. We would be grateful if you could return any rogue items to school! We would ask that you clearly label all items of clothing - woven 'sewn- in' labels are the very clear and long- lasting. They are available online from companies such as - very reasonably priced at 2.50 for 36 labels. Permanent marker is a good alternative, but please try to avoid writing names in biro as it washes out so easily and becomes very difficult to read. Many thanks!! Holy cross school bunny arrives! Sycamore Class would like to thank everyone for their support with the Buns for Bunny cake sale. We have now purchased our class pet. Toffee, our Dutch rabbit, has settled in very well and Year 4 have made an excellent start caring for her. She is very sweet natured and is very happy to be cuddled although she is developing a bit of a shoe- nibbling habit! You are very welcome to view her in the back garden behind Mr Eccles office but please come in small groups as she is still a baby and can get scared by lots of people all at once. Mardi Gras Carnival. Please come and watch us in the carnival in Ryde on Saturday 29th June. The carnival is a special one for the start of the Arts Festival and tells the story of the history of art. There are posters up around school so do look for further details but we would love to see you there. The parade leaves at 3.30 and travels from Ryde school down through the town, Union Street and onto the sea front so don't miss it! The Last Holy Cross Maths Challenge of the Year! Many thanks for your entries for the last maths challenge. Please can you encourage your children to take part in this week s challenge there is a prize and chocolate to be won! Well, done also to all the adults who took part.

3 The winners this week are: Key Stage 1 Winner Olivia Hedley Key Stage 2 Winner Brooke Morey Adult Winner Mat Turner This week s challenge is below and you will need to submit your entry to the challenge box in the entrance foyer by Friday 28th June. Make sure your answers are clear and include your full name and class. For adult entries please make sure your name is on your entry along with the name of your child / family member and their class. Key Stage 1 Olivia has written a list of different whole numbers. The digits of each number add up to 5. None of the digits are zero. Here is one of Olivia s numbers: 23. Olivia has written all the numbers she can think of. Can you write all the numbers Olivia has found? There are 16 altogether. Key Stage 2 Brooke had between 30 and 50 marbles. She counted the marbles in fours. There were 2 left over. She counted them in fives. There was 1 left over. How many marbles did Brooke have? Adults A goldfish costs An angel fish costs Mat paid exactly 20 for some fish. How many of each kind did he buy? All correct entries will be put in a hat and the winner will be chosen at random and announced in the next newsletter. There will be a prize and certificate for each winner! Good Luck! Jack the Horse. Please do not feed Jack the horse in the field opposite the car park. Jack s owners have found bits of Yew tree and other things that are bad for him in the field. Please could you let the school know if you see anyone trying to feed Jack. Thank you. Sports Day the finale of Holy Cross sports competitions will be held in the morning on Friday the 12th July, Parents are invited to join us in supporting the competitors. Holy Cross PTA. Thank you to all who have attended the P.T.A events so far, Cake and Uniform Sale raised and Father s Day Presents raised profit. We have organised several more things save the dates. Open Meeting Saturday 29th June 3-5pm Sports Day and Summer Fayre Friday 12th July 3-5pm East Cowes Summer Fayre Saturday 13th July 9.45am- 4pm

4 You may have noticed that Recycle with Michael a permanent clothes recycle bin has been placed in the car park. It will be emptied every 2 weeks. A poster has been displayed on the notice board if you would like more information. Easyfundraising is the easiest way for members of the public to raise money for good causes - all they have to do is shop online. The service is free to use and there are over 2,000 retailers listed who donate up to 15% of the purchase amount at no extra cost to the customer. Simply go online and help your children by registering at : If anybody has got any old uniform, please hand into the office and label the carrier bags P.T.A so we can recycle. We are also collecting Toys, books and DVD s in good condition so we can sell at the Summer Fayre, so please have a rummage and hand into the office. We also want any empty unwanted wine bottles for the stall we are holding at East Cowes Summer Fayre, please hand these in at reception and they will be passed onto the PTA. We are now starting to ask for anyone who would be willing to help us at the Summer Fayre and East Cowes Summer Fayre. We will need people to help set up, run stalls and help clear up afterwards. All help would be greatly appreciated.
