A huge thank you to the many great musicians, the St Sidwell Centre, the Hindu Temple Trust, Cafe Catalan, Malasian community, DCFA, Fair Trade/Traid craft, Sparkly Sonia, Respect and the many volunteers helping set up, run stalls and clear away who made this such a fun and memorable event.

We are applying for funding to help up develop and grow but in the meantime our local Councillors have funded a monthly workshop until Christmas. This is open to everyone in Newtown, with a minimal cost of 2 per person towards refreshments. The next session is on Monday 3rd October, 6.30pm-8.30pm in Belmont Hut making leaf prints with a press. Come along and join us!
3 HANDS UP IF YOU MISS THE TWIRLY SLIDE! The NCA is putting together a small working party to push ahead with plans to improve the play equipment in Belmont Park, especially in light of the loss of the much-beloved twirly slide last year. If you ve got time to commit to being part of such a short-term project team, please come along to our exploratory meeting on Friday 14th October at 11am in the Belmont Park Hut. It s likely to involve organising and running some community consultation, liaising closely with Parks Watch and the council s parks department, and doing some fund-raising. If those are the sorts of areas to which you could lend energy and maybe even expertise we d love to see you there. If you re interested in being involved but can t make that meeting please contact NCA treasurer Derek Burnside at derekburnside@belmontchapel.org.uk Thank you!

5 SWAP CAFE The last Swap Cafe for this year will be held on 9th October (see Details below). If you haven't yet been to one, do come this time: its fun. g NCA SOCIAL CAFE This month on Wed 12th October at 10.45am we have another talk: Executions in Exeter Mike Richards, is an Exeter Redcoat Guide and Cathedral Guide (and a retired Police Officer). In this illustrated talk he will tell us about the history of executions in Exeter between 1285 and 1943, in particular: Why people were executed Where they were executed How they were We had a very interesting talk by Jack Rudd on life being an International Chess player last month at the social cafe. There were lots of questions from those that came along too. Jack has kindly said he will return to our cafe on Wed 9th November to help some of us to learn to play better chess. You are very welcome to come along whether you want to play chess (even beginners) or just have a chat, a free cuppa and free cake.
6 MERRY GO ROUND TOY LIBRARY Come along to Merry Go Round Toy Library and borrow some of our amazing toys for a week or two. We have a huge range of toys for both little ones and school age children as well as resource books on family matters (sleep, sibling rivalry, healthy eating etc), arts and crafts, festivals and loads more. We are always happy to give advice, and it's fine to just drop in to have a look. Open every Tuesday 1pm-4pm and Thursday 10am-1pm in Exeter Scrapstore. Our AGM is at 7.30pm on Wednesday 19th October in Exeter Scrapstore - all welcome! We would love to see you there.

8 SEVEN MEN CHARGED WITH ATTEMPTED MURDER Seven men, including two from Exeter, have been charged with attempted murder following an alleged stabbing in Newtown. The charges follow a major police investigation after reports of a stabbing at a property in Lower Summerlands in April. Police revealed the charges which came about after the incident in which a man was stabbed 15 times at his home after bringing 3,000 worth of heroin and cocaine to Devon. Police believe the stabbing is linked to drug gangs. All seven men have been remanded in custody and are due to appear at Exeter Magistrates Court during October. WINTER WARMER CHANGE The date of the Newtown Community Association Winter Warmer has changed to Sunday 11 December. The event will include performances from the community association s choir. More details of this event will follow in due course. RESURFACING The long awaited road resurfacing in Cheeke Street has taken place within the last month. The road has now been smoothly resurfaced over, and the large dangerously growing dip in the road has disappeared.
9
10 GREAT WEST RUN The Great West Run returns to the streets of Exeter, including Newtown, on Sunday 16 October. As per the previous two years Belmont Park will be used as the headquarters for the organisers of the half marathon. The park will be used as an information point, baggage area for competitors, toilet facilities and First Aid.
11 About us Exeter Food Action is part of the Devon and Cornwall Food Association, and reclaims and redistributes excess food to organisations around Exeter that feed people. We employ one staff member, and have a team of over 50 volunteers, who all work to help stop food from going to landfill, aerobic digester or being used as animal food. While we acknowledge wider issues, we exist as an organisation in order to challenge the wastefulness that exists in our society, and do what we can with whatever food we can save. We work with wholesalers, manufacturers and retailers, and share this food with soup kitchens, hostels, food banks, community cafes, schools, and any other organisations that feed people, but do so not-for-profit. Our service is free, and we are financed entirely by grants and donations. What can we use? We are happy to receive almost all kinds of food, and are able to take goods in large levels. Our warehouse (Kendall Store, Spinning Path, Blackboy Road, Exeter, EX4 6SN) allows us to store dry food, fresh food and frozen food. Any food that is unusable is composted and shared with a local allotment collective if at all possible. Our own waste levels are very very low.
