3 Around the Creek Message from the SCRS Board Chair By Pam Garbin Summer holidays are finally here! If your plans do not include traveling this summer make sure to attend some of the activities that will be offered, right here in Saprae Creek. The RMWB Summer Programming starts Monday July 6th, there will be a variety of activities offered in this FREE 2 day a week drop off program (child must be potty trained) that takes place at the park by the firehall. There is an information package and registration form available on our Facebook page or attend on July 6th to fill out your registration package. There is one change this year in that they would like you to indicate which weeks you might think you can attend so that they can better prepare for the program in terms of materials. Hope to see you out there Mondays and Tuesdays. They have secured the firehall for rainy days or if its too hot outside, so programs will not be cancelled due to weather. July 14-17th sees the return of Miss Kelli and her Saprae Creek Summer dance camp. Registration available on sign up genius, ook for the link on our FB page or contact Tracy Unger for more information. The HUB program on Thursdays will continue through the summer (10-11:30), as will our Sunday taekwondo programs (6:30-7:30 for the younger kids and 7:30-8:30 for the older kids). Do not forget that the best fun of all is right in our backyard. WildPlay at Vista Ridge is open, make sure to call them for reservations to ensure you get the time you want. Vista Lounge is also now open on the Weekend (evenings) starting at 6pm (Fridays and Saturdays) We had a great time at the Family Fun Night last month at the skateboard park, thanks to everyone that attended. Soccer is now over for the season, thanks to our coaches Dave and Bruna and the kids who took part, it was definitely a great Spring for kicking the ball around and building up those skills. If you haven't taken the chance to check out our new website head over to There are a few added features including a business directory. If you have a business in Saprae Creek or you are a resident and would like to advertise your in town business, contact me at garbin@shaw.ca for the password and fill out the information. You can link your website to the page as well. I would like to welcome our youth ages to a NEW opportunity being offered in Saprae Creek. Watch for the Friday Night Youth Program taking place at Vista Ridge. A FREE program to attend. Check out the Saprae Creek Youth Group Facebook Page for more Information.
4 Around the Creek Councillor s Corner - JULY 2015 by Al Vinni Whew, continued hot and dry weather. It s nice, but sure has me worried about the danger from fire. The smoke from fires near and far is not very pleasant either, although it seems to be acting as a giant smudge keeping the bug population at bay, so the horses are liking that. Road construction is moving along in Saprae Creek. The way the season is going they might get ahead of schedule. Certainly by the fall of 2017 they will have all of the roads on the list redone with the new pavement and wider, flatter roads. It s going to look good. Nice to see so many people out walking and biking on the pavement on Freestone; hang on everyone, your road will be done too! Indoor space report to RWMB Council was on the list at last Council meeting. A recommendation was made to move ahead with Community Halls for Saprae Creek and Draper Road. So with feasibility done by the fall we can get those projects in next year s budget. Lot of other projects are going to moving ahead as well: sewer installation, water line upgrades, fire hall expansion, road building in Draper, golf course at Vista Ridge, all very encouraging for me as we develop our communities to have the amenities that are required and desired; at the same time helping to keep the local economy stimulated to counteract the effects of the continuing malaise in the oilsands industry. Hope you have had a chance to get down to Shell Place for an event. It is a great facility, and got national attendance last weekend with a major story in the Globe and Mail. I enjoyed the football games (big CFL fan), but there is so much more than just major events at Shell Place. Many will no doubt attend a banquet or two this year in the 800 seat banquet hall or check in with a non-profit at their new offices in Shell Place (maybe the nicest non-profit space in the country). These are the things that Council saw as items this community not only wanted but needed as we grow to be a city that provides for the hard working families that are driving the Canadian economy. Hope you all have a wonderful summer, enjoying all the things there are to do in our neighbourhoods, our city and wherever your vacation plans take you. Please sign up for some volunteering for the Western Canada Summer Games (August 6-16) and of course get out to some of the competitions, it is going to be a fabulous showcase of the athleticism of the young people of Western Canada, and a chance for us the show a total of 14,000 athletes, coaches, officials, parents and supporters of sport what a wonderful community we have. Please be FIRE SMART! Thx, Al Vinni Ward 3 Councillor
