1 Toastmasters District 22 Bulletin - 13 Jul 2004 Announcements, Recognition, Reminders, Tips from District 22 Visit the District 22 Website: Contact District Officers: District Governor, Bob Driskill Lt.Gov. Educ & Trng, Jack Mackey Lt.Gov. Marketing, RW Thompson District 22, Building Leaders-Upholding Excellence Also in This Issue: Cheers for AGDG Training! Cheer-Off Challenge Five Ways to Give a Lousy Speech District Officers Meeting Reaching Out to the Community... A Quarter for Your Thoughts It Is a Laughing Matter It Began With a Contest Last Call for Expense Reimbursement Area Governors Corner Club Officer Reminders by Bob Driskill, ATMG, District Governor What a dynamic start for S1 Area Governor Leon Bryant! He has already made his first club visit and sent me the completed form. Way to go, Leon. With enthusiasm like Leon s, S1 is on its way to be a President s Distinguished Area. Some Area Governors may be undecided about the first steps they should take. Here are two ideas to help you get started. Enlist Assistants: You don t have to serve your Area by yourself. Enlist some assistants. While it would be helpful for them to attend training, it s not required as long as you are willing to provide the necessary guidance. Begin Club Visits: Follow Leon s example. Start your visits now. From your visits, determine which clubs need your help and whether there are clubs that might need a Club Coach. When you get ready to make a visit, call the Club President or VP Education and request 4 to 6 minutes to speak to the Club. Ask the Club President or VP Education what the biggest areas of concern are for the Club. Then, tailor your speech for the Club. Make your speech uplifting, with at least two ideas the Club can use related to their current needs. Yes, a club visit is a requirement, but make it fun and supportive. You are not there to judge. You are there to be helpful. If possible, schedule your visit when the club officers also have their executive meeting so that you can discuss their Success Plan/DCP as you fill out your Area Visit form. If you do these two things, you ll be off to a good start. To make sure you keep the momentum, be sure to attend the August 7 District Officers Meeting in Overland Park. Let s have fun this year as we Build Leaders and Uphold Excellence. Congratulations!!! to Roger Manning of Tower Talkers who won Third Place in the Region 5 Semifinals of the World Championship of Public Speaking
2 Cheers for Area Governor / Division Governor Training! 2 by Peggy Lynn, ATMB/CL, PR Officer Leaders want to help but before they can do that they need to know in what ways that's possible. The BLUE Team held Area and Division Governor Training at Black & Veatch, Lamar, Overland Park, KS on Saturday, June 19th to aid in the discovery. District Governor Bob Driskill, ATMG had the brakes put on him not far from his destination point during a traffic stoppage on I-435 so Lt Governor Education Training Jack Mackey, ATMS/CL, got the BLUE Team going in Bob's stead. The BLUE Team is FLEXIBLE. Lt Governor Marketing RW Thompson, ATMS/CL, added to the mix along with Immediate Past District Governor Suzanne Conway, DTM. The BLUE Team is HELPFUL. After introductions and overview Bob arrived to a crowd, ready, willing and able! The BLUE Team is EAGER. The leaders were fitted with Governor's Manuals to aid each in their year ahead. The BLUE Team is PREPARED. The BLUE Team is GOAL- ORIENTED and armed with all the tools necessary to help Toastmasters ACHIEVE. Cheer-Off Challenge! Even if you are keeping on the "down low" you might've heard the rumblings soon to escalate to a roar like a wave. District 22 is going to have a CHEER-off! We invite, even DARE all Clubs, Areas and/or Divisions to create a cheer for this year's theme: BLUE! Building Leaders - Upholding Excellence. GO BLUE! Kicking off the "CHEER-off" at the Division and Area Governor Training on June 19th was Head Cheerleader, District Governor Bob Driskill, who called LGET Jack Mackey, to come on down! District Facilitator Pam Turner and District PR Officer Peggy Lynn joined the unusually shy Jack in a lead cheer. By the second go-around, EVERYBODY at the training chimed in energetically. There is not enough room to list all the types of things that took place. You might just need to attend the next training as a Governor yourself to get the full effect! (Think about it for next year, if not sooner!) Rest assured that the BLUE Team is excellent at BRAIN- STORMING. Fresh ideas, commitment, dedication to service, ENERGY, ENTHUSIASM - these are just a few qualities the BLUE Team is willing to fully realize for the benefit of the entire district, but most especially, for YOU! Hey, we even worked up a CHEER that was CHEERFULLY sung at the meeting's end by aforementioned Jack Mackey, District Facilitator Pam Turner, DTM and District Public Relations Officer Peggy Lynn, ATMB/CL. By the way, we're welcoming new cheerleaders! See the CHEER-OFF CHALLENGE and get ready for the fun on August 7th at Part 2 of Area /Division Governor Training! We are the BLUE Team, the Really, REALLY BLUE TEAM! Everywhere we go-ah, people want to know-oh, who we are-ah, so we tell them, We are the BLUE Team, the Really, REALLY BLUE TEAM! See how easy that was? So now you have one example and perhaps you think it stinks. VOILA! This contest is for YOU then! Make it better and send it to Peggy Lynn, at peglynn4pr@yahoo.com. Energy is the feeling and BLUE is the word! The District is open to even things absurd! Have fun with it and don't hesitate to send in your CHEERFUL words! CATCH the WAVE of the BLUE Team!
3 Five Ways to Give a Lousy Speech by Pamela Turner, DTM, District Facilitator 1. Come Ill-Prepared Wait until the evening before to look at the speech project requirements or even better, don t look at them at all. You can either wing it or read from your notes. Your speech will be lousy. 2. Ignore the Interests of Your Audience Pick a topic to please yourself. Don t worry about what your audience knows or what might interest them. Your speech will be lousy. 3. Tell Jokes Sprinkle a bunch of your favorite one-liners throughout your speech. Don t worry about whether or not they have anything to do with your topic. After all, you re a funny person, right? Hah! Your speech will be lousy. 4. Ignore the Timer You ve got the floor and have a lot to say. Who cares if the speech project requirements say 5 to 7 minutes? The Toastmaster will just have to figure out what to do if you infringe on the time allotted for another agenda item. 5. Ramble and Wander Don t bother making the organization of your speech clear. Just dazzle them with your wit. You ll be charming; your speech will be lousy. If you would rather NOT give a lousy speech, do the following: Take time to review your speech project requirements well in advance, then prepare and practice your speech to meet the requirements. Pick a topic that both interests you and appeals to the needs of your audience. Use humor that supports your topic. Watch the Timer and conclude your speech within time limits even if that means dropping a point or two to finish on time. Make it clear early in your speech what the structure or organization will be so it will be easy for your audience to follow. For more helpful tips, review projects 2 and 3 in the 2003 version of the basic Communication and Leadership Program manual. You ll find MORE than FIVE ways to give a good speech. Welcome to the latest addition to the District 22 family. 4 Reaching Out to the Community With Speechcraft 4 by Barbara Kuklenski, ATMS, Masters Speechcraft is a wonderful program for anyone who wants to let the community know about Toastmasters. In 2003, I began a new business that I named Wings of Caring. My first thought was to have a not-for-profit company. During my investigation, I became acquainted with an organization Front Porch located off Bruce Watkins Hiway and Linwood Blvd. While talking to the administrator, Patsy Shawver, I discovered that they had monthly workshops on various topics. Of course, Toastmasters sprang to my mind and I planted the idea of conducting a Speechcraft for their organization. During the year, I became busy with a steady stream of clients and decided to open my business as for-profit. This took all my time, but the thought of someday doing Speechcraft for the Front Porch organization was always in my mind. Finally in February of 2004, I made it a point to contact Patsy again. Patsy was as excited as I was and we set a time, date, and location for Speechcraft. Next, I looked for another experienced Toastmaster to work with me. To my delight, Larna Bebee, DTM, enthusiastically agreed to work with me. At our first meeting at Front Porch, we just did a few table topics along with introductions. We were able to tell them about Toastmasters and gain an understanding of what they hoped to achieve by participating in Speechcraft. Each meeting was filled with history and heart-warming stories about their lives and the lives of those in the Ivanhoe Community. We learned about inner-city living and the daily hardships that they have to endure. Both Larna and I were deeply blessed. The ladies varied in age from early 20 s to over 70. Each one came with a wonderful story to tell. They must have appreciated us too, because at our last meeting, the ladies presented two dozen roses to Larna and me. By conducting Speechcraft, I have now met one of the requirements for earning the ATM-Gold award. That pleases me; however, the real blessing came from sharing Speechcraft with those wonderful members of the Ivanhoe Community. Believe me when I say that Speechcraft is a great program for reaching out to the community with Toastmasters. A Quarter for Your Thoughts by Pamela Turner, DTM On June 22, I witnessed several Toastmasters getting their first experience as paid speakers. It all began with a creative Table Topics session. Steve Hassler, VPE of Yes We Can Toast, served as Topics Master that day. Steve instructed each Topics speaker to withdraw one coin from a bag of quarters. The challenge was to speak about the state represented on the quarter. Speeches varied from vacation memories to disasters along the road from here to the selected state. As payment for their services, speakers, got to keep their quarters. Just when I thought I d seen everything in Table Topics, you surprised me, Steve! Not only was it fun, it was the most painless way I ve seen a group of people move from the rank of amateurs to being paid speakers.
5 World Champion of Public Speaking Coming to Kansas 5 Want to help with this great event? Contact Conference Chair, Lynda Tuttle tutnman@yahoo.com It Is a Laughing Matter Speech contests at this time of the Toastmasters year are a laughing matter. That s right, it s time for Humorous Speech Contests. Whether your dream is to make people laugh or you just want to be entertained, the Humorous Speech Contests may be for you. If your Club wants to compete at the Area-level, don t delay in making arrangements to select the member who will represent your Club. As the District contest will be October 2nd, Division and Area contests will be in August and September. Check with your Area Governor to make sure you don t miss the opportunity to compete. As Division and Area Governors notify us of their contest dates, we will post them to the Event Calendar on Here s what we have so far in TALKS order. Combined A1/A3, Sep. 9, 6:30-9pm, Epic Center-3rd floor conf room, Wichita A2 Sep. 14, 6:30-9pm, Epic Center-3rd floor conf room, Wichita Division A, Sep. 18, 6:30-9pm, Wichita Combined L2 / L6, Aug. 28, 9am, 816 Broadway, KCMO L3 / L5, Aug. 12, 7pm at Tower Talkers Club All-K-Areas, Aug. 14, 9am-12, Lamar Division K, Sep. 11, 9am-12, Lamar Division S, Sep. 11, 12:30pm-4pm, Lamar, Black & Veatch Combined S1/S2/S4, Aug 28, 8:30am, Lamar It Began With a Contest by Charlie Frost, Tower Talkers If I had not entered the Table Topics Contest and if Roger Manning from my club had not entered the International Speech Contest, I probably wouldn't have gone to the District 22 Conference in Manhattan or the Region 5 Conference in Milwaukee. I got as far as the Division L level. Roger not only won the District 22 International Speech Contest, he placed Third for us at Region 5. For me this year, it was a no-brainer to go to District and Region. If both conferences had been in the greater Kansas City Area, I might have just attended the speech contests. Since Manhattan was a two-hour drive and Milwaukee an 80- minute plane ride away, it made sense to attend the complete Conferences. Actually, I m glad that I was present for all events. In my opinion, the conferences were wellorganized and executed without the glitches that I've witnessed with other groups. The food and drink were excellent. The educational sessions contained inspiring, but practical material. For me, the best part of the conferences was meeting many outgoing, positive-thinking, and talented people. It was time and money well invested. I hope to see more of you at the next round of conferences.
