Mountain St. (Hwy 66) between Linville Rd. and Main St., in Kernersville. Dinner starts at 6:00 PM and the business meeting will begin at 7:00 PM. This is another good opportunity to exercise your classic car so come on over to the Olympic Tuesday evening for some good food, fun and fellowship too! See ya there! Message from the President Greetings from Clemmons! Summer is certainly moving on quickly. The tree frogs are loud at our house every night. They usually start around the 1 st of July and were right on time this year! How hot has it been? Our daughter came in the other day and said it s hotter than a snake s belly in a wagon rut! We have never heard that one, but we agree that we ve had some very hot days recently. Regretfully, the weather was just too brutal for us to have our pot luck and auction event at Jim Quick s on June 30 th and we re-scheduled it for July 21 st at 5:00. Hopefully, the temperature will be kind to us and we will have a really good showing for that event to benefit our tour treasury. Those of us who were able to make it to the July 4 th Picnic had a wonderful meal. Thanks, Judy, for coordinating the picnic this year and also to Dwight Huygens for making the delicious ice cream we enjoyed. I appreciate everyone allowing me to lead the group in a few patriotic songs after lunch. As I write this, we are looking forward to tomorrow s trip to celebrate National Car Collectors Appreciation Day, then our Kernersville Cruise-in on Saturday. Everyone please keep our Ghosts and Legends Tour in mind as you make your plans for the coming months. We are going to need volunteers at each of the tour stops and at the hotel during the days of the tour. There is also still much work to be done to get ready for this event. If you haven t volunteered or been asked to consider a specific job, please let David or any of the club officers know if you are available and willing to help out. This is a huge project for our club and we need all of us to cooperate to get it done. We will have guests from other states as well as NC and we want to show them a good time as well as good southern hospitality. Our next regular cub meeting will be on July 17 th at the Olympic Restaurant. We will eat at 6:00 and begin our meeting promptly at 7:00. I m looking forward to it! Be there or be square. Roger Don t forget Bring your aluminum CANS AND CEREAL DONATIONS FOR THE SECOND HARVEST to our meeting! Throw the CANS in the back of John Ronchetti s Petty blue El Camino before you come in and bring the FOOD DONATIONS inside with you! THANX! 1

Kilroy Was Here! Ruth Ann Ronchetti, Old Salem Chapter Reporter The Kernersville Little Theater had the opening night of their latest production Kilroy Was Here! on Thursday evening, June 14 th, being advertised as Preview Night. Our OSC members Hope Peddle and Raymond Ruttle III were the stage manager and production manager of the show, respectively, which was performed at the Kernersville Elementary School on West Mountain Street in Kernersville. Beforehand, Hope contacted our club members to see if any of our veterans would come forward to help them with the end of the play to carry and hold flags of our Armed Forces to pay tribute to all the military veterans, past and present. My husband John volunteered (or should I say I volunteered him ) to carry the Air Force flag of which branch he is a veteran. We arrived a little earlier so these gentlemen could have a short rehearsal before everyone arrived and then we were all given front row seats to watch the play we settled in and then it was show time! This musical comedy salutes the brave men and women who served in the military and back home during World War II. Kilroy is a comedy and the setting is a U.S.O. Club ("The Serviceman's 'Home Away From Home'") in Brooklyn in Ships leaving the nearby Navy yard are being sunk by enemy U- boats. Allied intelligence suspects the club is unknowingly harboring Axis spies. Enter Private Joe Kilroy, a young soldier who draws a curious cartoon face everywhere he goes (and is this causing trouble)! He's the only one who knows where the next Allied convoy will converge. The enemy agents are stopping at nothing to learn his secret. The action builds to an exciting finale during a wild radio broadcast. 2

3 At the end of the play, a most fitting tribute was given to our Armed Forces in front of a huge American flag draping the entire back wall of the stage. One by one, an Armed Forces flag from each branch of the service was proudly carried out by a past/present veteran of that branch, including my husband, John Ronchetti, our past OSC president a very proud and touching moment. Hope, Raymond, and all the Kernersville Little Theater people another excellent show what a great performance from all of you! THANK YOU all for a most enjoyable evening! OSC Display at Brighton Gardens Senior Living Ruth Ann Ronchetti, Old Salem Chapter Reporter On Saturday, June 16 th, some of our Old Salem Chapter members were kind enough to gather for an invited display of our antique cars at the Brighton Gardens Senior Living facility in Greensboro for the enjoyment of their residents, in honor of Father s Day. It was a little difficult to get the numbers we hoped for because of it being Father s Day weekend, but our Old Salem Chapter came through again THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR PARTICIPATION! I not only appreciated it but I know the residents really enjoyed seeing all your cars, too! You helped make the day very special for them! A lot of the residents were already sitting outside and waiting for things to start when we arrived. They were sooo happy to see us when we arrived as soon as we got the cars parked, people started coming to look at them and some telling us stories about what they had or what their parents had way back when. It is heartwarming to see the smiles on their faces as they are recalling their memories and how much they appreciate being able to see these old cars again. A DJ was set up and played all those good Oldies and after a little bit of time, there were even some that got up and started dancing in the parking lot including our own Judy Colley some assisted or even with their walkers (Judy didn t have her walker with her that day ). There was also a food tent that offered us complimentary hot dogs, drinks, and desserts how nice was that! Also, for our visit, we took our little Toy Pomeranian, Muffie along with us, and of course, everybody just loved seeing her, too! It turned out to be a very lovely visit and the weather could not have been better! Another good OSC Outing! 3

4 A Blast from the Past at Westbend Vineyards Ruth Ann Ronchetti, Reporter Saturday, June 23 rd turned out to be a really fun day! Our Old Salem Chapter was contacted several months before by Erinn Diaz (AKA Marilyn Monroe at Danny Crouse s Christmas Show), owner of First in Flight Entertainment, requesting our Chapter to display some antique cars at a special event that Westbend Vineyards in Lewisville was going to have called A Blast from the Past, a 1950 s/1960 s party, and they needed lots of old cars there. Sounding like a fun event being set in that time period, as Activities Director, I accepted the challenge to round up about 30 cars for this party. After starting with our OSC, my search went beyond to other local clubs and contacts that I had to get the word out and meet my goal. I was pleasantly surprised the day of the event; not only did we have a nice showing from our members, but about 40 cars showed up that day, and it was great! It was hot but great! They were well prepared for a lot people on that hot day, providing a large covered patio area, which was certainly appreciated! As participants, each car that was in the display field got a free bottle of Westbend Vineyards wine, and free hot dogs were also provided. There was also a vendor on site, too, with other foods of choice to offer along with ice cream mmm most fitting for a day like it was! Live music was provided by Jeanne and Wayne West from Memphis, TN. They played many of our favorites from the 50's, 60's, 70's and today. This husband and wife duo, (formerly with The Villagers from the nationally syndicated 60's TV series, The Village Square ) was very, very good extremely talented and most entertaining! To add to the fun, there was also a 1950 s costume contest that included about 6-8 people that really dressed the part; it was hard to narrow the winners down between the last few. And then, at the end of the day, we were asked if they could use our 55 Chevy for a photo opp with a bottle of their Westbend Vineyards wine and glass displayed on our 1950 s window snack tray. Of course, they could felt very honored to have been asked and that picture wound up in the Clemmons Courier on Thursday, June 28 th how bout that! Ya just never know what surprises can happen when you hang around till the end very cool! 4

5 Happy 4 th July! Ruth Ann Ronchetti, Reporter The 4 th July was on a Wednesday this year, right smack in the middle of the week, but it didn t make a bit of difference regarding all the festivities that presented themselves! It was time to celebrate our Independence Happy Birthday, America! I was contacted about a month before requesting our Chapter to provide 15 antique convertibles to carry veterans and Kernersville dignitaries. A BIG THANK YOU goes out to Clarence Lambe, Jim Taylor, Helen Nason, Leigh & Mark Bodenheimer, and Joe Huygens for providing the cars that were needed and our OSC volunteer drivers, Judy Colley, Scott Mercer, David Hawks, Dwight Huygens, and other friends. Unfortunately, Helen s Thunderbird didn t make the parade because upon arrival, Sam s brake line broke and she had to ride home up in the air on a rollback oh, my! These cars and volunteers gathered at the Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home by 8 AM on Hwy. 150 just north of Kernersville and were treated to a wonderful breakfast provided by the Rotary Club before the parade... lucky them! When done and loaded up, they proceeded to West Mountain Street to start the parade after all the 5K runners/walkers got done shortly after 9 AM. I found my spot and was ready and waiting to get pictures of all of them they finally arrived and what a nice sight that was with all the veterans in those old cars with our beautiful Old Glory waving from every car! Sooo cool! We John and I and other OSC members that were just going to be in the parade started lining up at 7:30 AM at the Kernersville Elementary School for the 4 th July Parade line-up ugh, sooo early but we did it. We had a good showing of our members there, too THANK YOU ALL FOR COMING OUT WITH US! It seemed like forever till the parade started it actually was almost 2 hours, but it finally started. Almost 30 minutes before we could get our car moving though, John got a call that our house alarm had gone off so we needed to get home to see what was wrong so we never did get to be in the parade everything was OK, BTW but we heard that there were tons of people there again, as usual. After the parade, our OSC had our 3 rd Annual 4 th July Potluck Picnic at Shelter #2 in the 4 th July Park wow try to say that fast 3 times in a row didn t realize it till I wrote it! Judy Colley was chairing this event and with the help of a few early arrivals, the decorations got put up and the food started arriving mmm, good! We had a wonderful assortment of food and pies and watermelon we sure didn t go hungry! And then to top it all off, Julie & Joe Huygens brought their wonderful Hit & Miss homemade strawberry ice cream yum! THANK YOU ALL, FOR YOUR GOODIES! 5

6 After our bellies were full, our president Roger Hockaday handed out a few song sheets and thought it would be most appropriate for the day for us to sing some Patriotic songs okaaay we did but I think maybe we should have had some practice beforehand heehee but it was fun anyway! We all had a great time it was hot but then what can you expect for the 4 th July! It was really nice for all of us to get together and celebrate our country s birthday I guess we will do it all again next year! OSC Fundraising Raffles Ruth Ann Ronchetti, Reporter Starting last month, we began two new fundraisers for our Chapter to help with our upcoming Ghosts and Legends Tour upfront expenses. John Ronchetti has printed up the tickets for them and the selling began at our last month s Kernersville Cruise-In and they were also handed out at our last meeting to our members. The first one is a CASH Raffle EVERYONE LIKES TO WIN MONEY! The tickets are $1.00 each, 6 for $5.00, and 12 for $ The drawing will be at our August Cruise-In on August 11 and the winner does not have to be present to win. Cash prizes are 25%, 15%, and 10% of the gross the other 50% of the gross goes into our OSC Tour treasury yeah! So the more you sell, the bigger the prizes and the bigger amount we will profit! The other Raffle is for our Dale Earnhardt Vintage Cooler. We decided to take this route to sell the cooler thinking that we would make out better money wise by doing so rather than having a Silent Auction. The tickets for this are the same as the CASH Raffle $1.00 each, 6 for $5.00, and 12 for $10. The drawing for this will also be on August 11 at our Cruise- In and the winner does not have to be present to win. I will be bringing the tickets to our next meeting sooo please if you haven t gotten any to sell yet, please support our effort and pick some up to sell and for those of you that have money to turn in, please bring it with you to our meeting. I will have plenty more tickets with me, too, if you want some more! THANK YOU, ALL, FOR YOUR HELP WITH THIS! Thought for the Month The Food Stamp Program, administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is actually proud of the fact it is distributing the greatest amount of free meals and food stamps ever. Meanwhile, the National Park Service, administered by the U.S. Department of the Interior, asks us to "Please Do Not Feed the Animals." Their stated reason for the policy is because the animals will grow dependent on handouts and will not learn to take care of themselves Public Records 6
