April 2017, Volume 19, Issue 4 April Meeting Olympic Restaurant Kernersville AACA s Old Salem Chapter monthly meeting will be Tuesday, Apr. 18 th at The Olympic Restaurant, 1541 W. Mountain St., in Kernersville. Dinner starts at 6:00 PM and the business part of the meeting will start at 7:00 PM. Don t forget to invite and/or bring your antique/classic vehicle friend(s) with you for a fun evening! See ya Tuesday for some great food, fun, and fellowship! Message from the President Once again, Ruth Ann did a great job of planning some really nice events this past month. The car display at the Forest Heights Senior Center was well attended, the weather was perfect and the seniors really enjoyed seeing our cars. Although I couldn t attend, I am sure the Pot Luck Dinner/Holy Land Pictures event was very enjoyable for the club members who were able to attend. Unfortunately, the car display at the Krispy Kreme fundraiser for Victory Junction was rained out. However, I was glad to hear that this great event has been rescheduled for May 19. As you know, during the coming few weeks, two of our premier club events are fast approaching. Our Purple Heart benefit car show is scheduled for April 22 and our Spring Folly car show will take place on May 6. I am sure we will have much discussion of these two events at our meeting next week. We will need volunteers for both events and I am sure many of you have or will volunteer soon to ensure these events, once again, will be the successful and enjoyable events that they always are. See you at our OSC meeting at the Olympic next Tuesday! Nelson On the Web: National: NC Region: Old Salem Chapter: OSC Facebook: Old.Salem.AACA Heads Up Second Harvest Food Bank donations are now being donated monthly out of our OSC treasury. You are still free to donate on your own, if you like. Bring your OLD CAR MAGAZINES, for the prison ministry collection! Let John Ronchetti know if you have CAR MAGAZINES 1

3 Two years after the end of World War II, Ford Motor Company founder and auto genius Henry Ford died on April 7, Try answering these trivia questions about this philanthropist and inventor who also had a very dark side. What Was the Very First Car Designed by Ford? The Ford Quadricycle didn't have many features, like brakes, but it ran -- and that's all that mattered to investors. Photo credit: Joe Ross/Flickr. Ford is usually associated with the Model T and Model A, but he was playing around with car designs long before those two -- or even the Ford Motor Company -- came into existence. His very first car appeared in 1896 when he drove the "Quadricycle" around Detroit. This was a four-wheeled cart with minimal bells and whistles (literally -- the horn was a doorbell) and no safety features whatsoever, including brakes. However, it worked, and it got investors interested in what Ford could do. Based on his Quadricycle designs, investors backed his forming the Detroit Automobile Company. Ford Launched What Charcoal Company That's Still Around Today? Henry Ford was using so much lumbers in creating his car that he enlisted his cousin-in-law's help in buying up a whole bunch of timberland. Ford's company would then chop down the trees on their own instead of buying from someone else. The process left him with a lot of stumps, branches and sawdust that he couldn't use. Enter a chemist named Oren Stafford who said he could combine the tree parts with tar and cornstarch to create a combustible block of fire that could be used to cook food called a charcoal briquette. Ford liked the idea and put his cousin in charge of the manufacturing plant for the new product that was first marketed to businesses, then to individuals. That cousin in law helped find a site for the charcoal plant and the company would eventually be named after him in his honor. His name was E.G. Kingsford, and his namesake is still around to this day. In 1937, What Country Granted Ford Their Highest Medal Awarded to Foreigners? Henry Ford did some impressive things, but it's worth noting that he was also a rabid anti-semite. Rather than just harbor ill thoughts, he published a weekly paper called the Dearborn Independent, which took every opportunity to insult Jewish people, culture, language, intelligence, and more. He also placed copies of the paper in dealerships across the country, as well as in new car. The paper folded after Ford was sued for libel by a Jewish farm organizer and Jewish groups organized a boycott of Ford's cars. Ford was also an admirer of Adolf Hitler. Apparently the feeling was mutual, because in 1937, Ford was given the highest medal the Nazis would pass out to a foreigner: The Grand Cross of the German Eagle. 3
4 Purple Heart Foundation Benefit Car Show! Ruth Ann Ronchetti, Activities Saturday, April 22 nd, will be our second Purple Heart Benefit Car Show to be held at the Main Street United Methodist Church in Kernersville, 12 Noon till 4:00 pm. The Northwest Piedmont Purple Heart Foundation will host a dinner in August at the Richard Childress Racing Complex in Welcome for the Purple Heart recipients and their families. On the following page you will see the Purple Heart Benefit Car Show flyer with the info on it but here is a little more detail for you: 1) Our Kernersville Mayor, Dawn Morgan, has agreed to come and say a few words for us. 2) Benny Vickers, a Purple Heart Veteran and retired race car driver, will have his Purple Heart race car there and will speak about some of his military experiences. 3) Our OSC Honorary Member and good friend, Danny Crouse, will be singing the National Anthem for us at the beginning of our opening program and then after the VFW Memorial Guard s performance is over, he will then sing Lee Greenwood s, God Bless the USA. 4) The VFW Memorial Honor Guard will Present the Colors and do a presentation to honor each branch of the service. 5) A group of Model A/T s are confirmed to attend the show again this year! 6) Spectator parking areas have been confirmed by S & R Motors, and the parking lot NEXT to Ciener Gardens at Main Street & Harmon Lane. Unfortunately, Ciener Gardens has an event going on that same day so our car show guests will not be able to park there this year. 7) There is a Boy Scout event going on in the church Fellowship Hall the same time we are there, starting at Noon, so that small parking lot is closed to any of our spectators. 8) We are reserving the church parking lot for Show Cars only, hopefully we will fill it up! 9) Vestal Buick GMC (our very gracious Cruise-Ins sponsor) will be bringing a few of their cars to be displayed in the grassy area. 10) The Purple Heart Foundation will be selling Hot Dogs & Drinks and tickets for a $500 Visa Gift Card and some raffle tickets. 11) And be sure to check the Kernersville News the week of our event, either Tuesday or Thursday. They will be doing an article about our event in there. Okaaay now we will need some VOLUNTEERS (10:00 AM) to pull this whole thing off! I will have a Sign-Up sheet at our meeting PLEASE GIVE US YOUR SUPPORT! This should be a great day to remember! PLEASE BRING DOOR PRIZES, BAKED GOODS TO SELL, & CAKES FOR THE AUCTION WITH YOU! WE NEED THEM BADLY! THANX! 4

6 17 th Annual Kernersville Classic Car Show Ruth Ann Ronchetti, Activities Saturday, May 6 th, is our biggest OSC fundraiser and event of the year, our 17th Annual Car Show at the Kernersville Spring Folly held in the parking lots from the Chamber of Commerce to First National Bank off Mountain Street! In order to pull this off as easy and stress-free as possible, we will NEED to have everyone help that can! PLEASE BE WILLING TO DONATE YOUR TIME... it isn't hard work by any means and can be a lot of fun in the process, but it is a long day and any relief along the way will certainly be appreciated! NEW THIS YEAR: Our Registration will be from 8:00 to 10:00 am instead of starting at 9:00 am. Last year we had a major traffic jam and realized that one hour was not enough time to register over the 100 cars that we get. Also, instead of entering on Mountain Street we are changing our entrance to go on Broad Street next to Ms. Winner s & then enter by a small alleyway behind the bank, giving us much more room to accommodate many more cars at one time. And once in there, we will split the line into two lines: the left will be Pre-Registered and the right will be the Day of Event Registration. These changes should help tremendously in moving everyone along in a much more expedient fashion. Sooo with the above being said, we will need to start earlier & will need more parking people to cover all our bases. The following "jobs" are who we need people for: 6:45 AM Set-Up (5) / 6:45 AM Parking People (10-12) / 7:00 AM Registration Table (4) / 9:00 AM Judges (15-20) No experience necessary / Clean-Up after 3 PM I will have Sign-Up sheets for our jobs at our meeting on Tuesday so please be sure to attend, if you can. We will also have our "Driving Thru the Decades" antique car display, again this year. Each of these cars will be parked in the Chamber of Commerce parking lot for display and will have special window cards made up to place on the windshield so everyone will know what they are looking at. This has always worked out to be a very impressive display for everyone to enjoy. Our Decades display this year will be Memorable Movie/TV Cars, like we had at our July Cruise-In last year. Everyone should really enjoy seeing this display! For those of you new to us since our Car Show last year, the Spring Folly Festival is a REALLY big event for the Town of Kernersville bringing 20,000+ to the Downtown streets. The streets are full of vendors, lots of food, and great entertainment plus carnival rides for the kids... great family fun! And... this is the time for our Old Salem Chapter AACA to put our best foot forward and showcase our beautiful cars, too. All of our club cars will be displayed in the Chamber/Town Hall parking lot as a club display. We encourage all of our members to participate in displaying their car(s). It will not cost you anything to register (our club treasury pays a flat fee for ALL of our members to attend) but... EACH CAR MUST BE REGISTERED! So please fill out the following Registration Form (one for each car) and mail it to the Chamber of Commerce at the address listed... and... where it says "Car Club," be sure to put OSC AACA or Old Salem Chapter in that space. If it isn t written in there, you will have to pay $15. Gonna be a great day! Come join us and show everyone those beautiful cars! 6
