April 2018, Volume 20, Issue 4 Message from the President Before I moved back to Kernersville about five years ago, I was very active in the Washington DC Centre MG Car Club (MGCC). Just like our club, the MGCC planned regularly scheduled outings to provide opportunities for the membership to enjoy driving and displaying their cars. The MGCC also planned events that were intended to educate the members about restoration and general maintenance of their cars. One type of educational event involved visiting and touring several different automotive restoration shops. Another type involved a series of technical sessions concerning various procedures for the proper maintenance of various components of our cars. The technical sessions were sometimes performed by professionals from or in shops that specialized in their particular expertise and sometimes were performed by the club s most experienced and knowledgeable MGCC members who were willing to share their knowledge with those of us who were less mechanically inclined. MGCC car members, and their cars, benefited from the experience gained while attending these types of events. Ruth Ann does an exceptional job scheduling and informing us of events and outings for our club. She has, on a number of occasions, requested suggestions from our membership concerning events that could be added to our schedule. I would like to propose that a few educational events of the type that the MGCC organized would be a useful addition to our club s activities. I realize that finding events like those I have described is easier for a one marquee club like the MGCC than for a club like ours whose members own many different car makes. However, holding general tech sessions that are focused on features that are common to all of our cars, e.g., operation and maintenance of brake systems, painting or maintaining paint jobs, tire selection and maintenance, etc., could be of interest to our members. I have included in the New Business portion of the agenda for our upcoming business meeting two entries to determine the interest by our membership in club events concerning tech/other information sharing to be gained in educational events. I am giving this advance notice of these agenda items so that you can think about the usefulness of such events and come to the meeting with some suggestions of places or topics that could be the subject of the events. One thing I want to emphasize is that, while all suggestions will be welcomed, individuals to help out with organizing the events will be necessary. So, if you think scheduling such events is a good idea, please be willing to help out with organizing them. Hope to see you all next Tuesday, April 17, at the Olympic Family Restaurant! Nelson April Meeting Olympic Restaurant Kernersville AACA s Old Salem Chapter monthly meeting will be Tuesday, Apr. 17 th at The Olympic Restaurant, 1541 W. Mountain St., in Kernersville. See ya Tuesday for some great food, fun, and fellowship! 1

3 Purple Heart Foundation Benefit Car Show! Ruth Ann Ronchetti, Activities THIS Saturday, April 14 th, will be our third Purple Heart Benefit Car Show to be held at the Main Street United Methodist Church in Kernersville, 12 Noon till 4:00 pm. The Northwest Piedmont Purple Heart Foundation will host a dinner in August at the Richard Childress Racing Complex in Welcome for the Purple Heart recipients and their families. On the following page you will see the Purple Heart Benefit Car Show flyer with the info on it but here is a little more detail for you: \ 1) We will open up our program at 12:30 pm with the beautiful sound of bagpipes playing, Going Home, by Kyle Auman of Greensboro. So fortunate to have found him! 2) Our OSC Honorary Member and good friend, Danny Crouse, will be our DJ for the afternoon and will be singing the National Anthem for us at the beginning of our Opening Program and then after the VFW Memorial Guard s performance is over and speakers are done, he will then sing Lee Greenwood s, God Bless the USA. At the end of the day, before the 50/50, he will close us out with, The American Trilogy. Such a cool song! 3) The VFW Memorial Honor Guard will Present the Colors and do a presentation to honor each branch of the service. 4) We are very pleased to announce that U.S. Army Brigadier General, J. R. Gorham will be in uniform and will speak at our event. Our Kernersville Mayor, Dawn Morgan, has agreed to come and say a few words for us again. 5) When our Opening Program is done, our bagpiper Kyle Auman, will again play for us by doing some Scottish Marches. 6) A group of Model A/T s are confirmed to attend the show again this year! 7) Spectator parking areas have been confirmed by S & R Motors, the Overflow Church Parking Lot off Oakhurst, and the parking lot NEXT to Paul J. Ciener Gardens at Main Street & Harmon Lane. Unfortunately, Ciener Gardens has an event going on that same day so our car show guests will not be able to park there this year. We are reserving the main church parking lot for Show Cars only. The small parking lot next to the church building will not be available for guests to park there. 8) Vestal Buick GMC (our very gracious Cruise-Ins sponsor) will be bringing a few of their cars to be displayed in the grassy area. 9) The Purple Heart Foundation will be selling Hot Dogs & Drinks and tickets for a $500 Visa Gift Card, raffle tickets for a $500 Visa Gift Card, and NW Purple Heart Foundation Polo Shirts. Okaaay now We need our VOLUNTEERS to pull this whole thing off! PLEASE GIVE US YOUR SUPPORT! This should be a great day to remember! PLEASE BRING DOOR PRIZES, SINGLE PORTION BAKED GOODS TO SELL, & CAKES FOR THE AUCTION WITH YOU! WE NEED THEM BADLY! THANKS! 3

5 2018 NC Region Cruise-in 2018 NC Region 4th Annual Cruise-in April 21, 2018 Meet Greet, and Eat By John Allred When: Saturday, April 21, 2018 Meet at Exxon Station at I-40 Sandy Ridge Rd. Exit 9 am. Where: Pittsboro, NC. Located on Business 64 between Cary and Siler City, NC and NC 15/501 between Chapel Hill and Sanford, NC. What's to see and do. We will gather in Pittsboro, NC between 10:30 and 11:00 AM in the parking area on Salisbury St., located around the corner from the S&T Soda shop on Hillsboro St. Here we will meet up with members of the AACA Oakland/ Pontiac non-geographical club who will be on their World-wide Spring Tour. From there we can tour Pittsboro's local shops including antiques, musical instruments, wine shops, toys, clothing and coffee shops. There are numerous eating establishments. Virlies Grill is available for brunch and the S&T Soda shop offers hamburgers, hot dogs and such. After brunch, or lunch, we will meet at the Soda Shop for ice cream and tour of the old Ice Cream Parlor upstairs. The PBS series [The Wood Wright Shop] has a training store located next to the soda shop with an antique wood working tool store on the second floor. Great place for wood workers to visit and maybe purchase a much needed or desired tool. The Starrlight Mead Brewery is located at 480 Hillsboro Street where they offer an alcoholic brew made from honey and available for purchase. Around 2:30, the Oakland/ Pontiac Group will head for Silk Hope, NC for a tour of the Farm Heritage Center. Those attending the NC Region Cruise-in are welcome to follow along, if you so desire. This promises to be a fun Cruise-in and a great time to meet fellow Antique Car enthusiasts. See you there! 5

6 May 5, 2018 Kernersville Spring Folly Cruise-In Ruth Ann Ronchetti, Activities This year at the Kernersville Spring Folly our Old Salem Chapter has opted to do a Spring Folly Cruise-In instead of a Car Show as we have done in the past. Since the Folly Committee has changed some rules we have not been able to do as well financially making it difficult for us to barely break even, so this is what the members decided for us to try as a Plan B. By doing a Cruise-In, we will still maintain a presence at the Spring Folly with a lot less expense and work and it will be much easier on everyone with little expense to put out. And the spectators will still get to see all those beautiful Classics and Antique Cars. We will continue to do a Driving Thru the Decades display since that seems to be a crowd pleaser. This year we will feature cars that are a little different, The Unusuals. But to make it all work, we will still need some volunteers to help us out. We will need some parking people in the beginning and a few people to help set-up and man a table under the Farmer s Market shelter. I will have a Sign-Up Sheet at our meeting for that so please help us out! Be on the Lookout Be on the lookout in the NC Region News for input from our Chapter submitted by Crystal Tanner. Thank you, Crystal! New Letters From Home Show Letters From Home honors our veterans, active military heroes and their families by reviving PATRIOTISM through music! The group was born in Winston-Salem, NC, and has since toured the nation becoming one of the fastest growing musical movements in the United States. Join Erinn Diaz, Courtney Groves, and special guests including their LIVE big band! In 2017, a documentary on Letters From Home produced by David Hardy for OurState Television won the Emmy Award for Best Magazine Documentary. Singing, Tap Dancing, audience interaction and laughter like never before this show will have you singing, toe tapping and hootin-and-ahollerin all night long! This performance is a new Letters From Home show that truly hopes to give a Welcome Home to Vietnam Veterans. 6
