2 Spring Party Night 2 Links with St Petersburg at our Christmas Dance It was chilly outside but inside there was a lovely warm atmosphere and everyone had a spring in their step at our end of term Party. Our new venue, at Barclay Viewforth Church Hall, is lovely and Rachel Shankland kept us all in the right place at the right time. We were very fortunate to have Seonaid Lynn and Roddy Johnston playing for us.

Firstly, thanks to all of you who braved the bad weather to attend the last few classes of the winter term. Let s hope we ve seen the last of it and it settles down for the spring term. You ll find the classes timetable on page 6 in this edition of Dancing Forth. Thankfully spirits have not been dampened as lately we have had some excellent well attended functions. The Nice n Easy dance was very successful attracting many dancers from the beginners and Intermediate classes. We also had the pleasure of seeing the children put on a demonstration and join in some of the dancing. Everyone enjoyed a mini Burns supper and young Piper, Jamie Crawford, played excellently for us while the Haggis was dished up. We enjoyed lively music from Luke Brady and along with a great programme of dances, the evening was a great success and enjoyed by everyone. The Children s Ball was held in Lauriston Hall this year. We had children who travelled from near and far, and all had a great time. We have to thank the parents and teachers for their hard work and support in bringing the children to the dance. Their last dance, The Flying Scotsman, was a brilliant experience of noise and happiness! Ian McPhail and his band played well chosen tunes to match the occasion. As well as attending the Ball, our children s team entered the Perform in Perth competition in what was their first ever competition. They were delighted to be awarded first prize in their category. Well done to them and a big thank you to the teachers and parents for their help. Our end of winter term classes party in the Barclay Viewforth hall was another enjoyable event with music again from Roddy Johnston and Seonaid Lynn. There was no holding back with everyone up dancing, showing their skills and having a good time. A date for your diary is our afternoon workshop and Old Favourites dance on Saturday 28 th April in Lauriston Hall. The workshop is from 3 to 5pm and you are welcome to come along for tea before the evening dance at 7.30pm. The Annual Ball will be on Saturday 12 th May in Greyfriars Kirk. There are a few tickets left but do not delay or you may be disappointed. Prior to that we are holding our ball workshop at Murrayfield Church Hall on Sunday 6 th May, 2:30 to 4:30, where we will run through the dances on the Ball programme. Spring term classes start on 16 th April. I look forward to seeing you at one of them. Happy Dancing! David Watson, Chairman

4 A life remembered 4 Pre tour publicity photograph taken in the Caledonian Hotel MINA MARGARET CORSON (STORRAR) Born in Calgary, Alberta, on 15th September Her Scottish parents had been sent to study milking methods. At the end of the first world war the family returned to Scotland in 1918, Mina being aged 2. Her father had a dairy farm at Gateside in Fife, milk being delivered in cans and travel took place in a pony trap. Her mother played the violin and the church organ. Mina went to Gateside school at the age of 5. The family moved to 14 Shandon Street, Edinburgh. His small dairy there was just over the railway, delivering milk by pony trap and selling home made scones. When they moved to Edinburgh Mina enrolled at James Gillespie school for girls. Afterwards she studied Gymnastics in Aberdeen, eventually becoming assistant to Miss Allie Anderson who was head of gym at James Gillespie s. On Allie s retirement Mina became head teacher of the gym department. Presumably with Allie s example, she took up Scottish country dancing, going on to teach for the Edinburgh Branch, St Andrews Summer School and widely abroad, eventually becoming an examiner for the RSCDS. She devised the popular Jig Miss Allie Anderson as a tribute to her old teacher. She spent many happy years golfing at the Merchants of Edinburgh golf course where she was ladies captain from 1986 to She won the Clark Trophy in She married Len in the late 50s and they lived in a bungalow at 133 Comiston Drive, Edinburgh. Bob Grant SUMMER DANCING Open air dancing at the Ross Bandstand in Princes Street Gardens begins on Monday 28th May and continues every Monday night until 30th July. If you have been to classes during the winter this is a good opportunity to continue dancing throughout the summer and a chance to make new friends and catch up with old ones. We have live music every night and a team of dancers to demonstrate the dances with lots of experienced dancers to help out. If you don't fancy dancing outside we have indoor nights, again with live music, where the dances are recapped. We will be dancing on Tuesday nights at Fairmilehead Church Hall, Frogston Road West from 29th May until 26th June and continue on Tuesday nights from 3rd July to the end of August at Stockbridge House. Please see our website w here all programmes and crib are available. Looking forward to a good summer and enjoyable dancing. Margaret Burns Chairperson Gardens Scottish Country Dancers

Your teacher may suggest that one of our other classes would be more suitable and give you more enjoyment. We are happy for you to transfer between classes to find the right level for you. Beginners Intermediate Advanced Advanced Plus If you want an introduction to the basics of Scottish Country Dancing, this is the class for you. Here, you will learn many popular Scottish dances along with the basic steps and formations needed to do them. After a few weeks in this class, you re sure to be able to negotiate a ceilidh or two Once you have a reasonable grasp of the basics, this class helps you build your knowledge of the steps and most common formations. Some dancers are comfortable remaining at this level, others progress when they feel ready. You will start to become more confident on the dance floor. This class is suitable for experienced intermediate dancers looking to progress. Confident in the basics, a wider range of formations will be introduced although steps will continue to be covered. Selected dances from upcoming events will be taught as many in this class enjoy going to Branch dances and dancing socially in general. For dancers who are confident with all formations and want to perfect their dancing with others of a similar level. Steps and formations are covered in depth with individual comments given to help dancers attain a high level of technique. Our Children s class meets every Thursday, in term time, at Mayfield Salisbury Church Hall, 18 Mayfield Road, EH9 1TQ. All dancers pm Intermediate pm We have a very energetic group of children who love to have fun dancing, but there is always space for a few more. Everyone dances from pm and the more experienced dancers stay on until 5pm for more challenging dances. Scottish country dancing is an excellent way for children to learn teamwork and cooperation whilst keeping fit, having fun and making lots of new friends. New dancers are welcome to join us from Thursday 19th April.

8 I dance in class because 8 We are delighted that more of our dancers want to share why they come to class and what it means to them. At the age of 17 I started to learn to play the accordion and my teacher then was the same teacher as many of the accordionists who play for RSCDS today Chrissie Leatham! A well known name in the teaching circles. Despite my love of the accordion, I started to play with a modern style dance band as a keyboard player and accordionist, thus leaving my teachings with the accordion and my link with Chrissie. I played in a band for general dancing for some 38 years when finally, in 2007, the band stopped playing together and I moved away to live in Spain. I returned to live in Edinburgh and saw the advertisement for RSCDS at beginners level Well! Was I in for a little shock? I only knew Scottish Dance as what I now know is Ceilidh style dancing Gay Gordons, Strip the Willow etc. Then I met Brian Harry who started to educate me in the etiquette and style of RSCDS Scottish dance. I didn t have a clue when he would say things like, CAST UP, REEL OF 3 ON THE SIDE, etc. I had other thoughts of what a reel was e.g. Eightsome Reel. As the last year has gone in, I continue to be educated by the teachers and really am enjoying it so much. Everything that s advertised, like fitness and fun and make new friends is so true. I can remember some (parts) of the dances but still shout, AHRGG!! many times as people guide and shove me into place. Maybe at the age of 67 it s a strange time to start to learn for the first time and despite suffering the stress fracture to my foot at the end of last term, I have recovered and continue to look forward so much to the evenings and functions and have actually moved in to the Intermediate Level which of course means more fun and being guided around the floor often. I love it!! Thank you RSCDS. Ian, Intermediates The Intermediate Class is of mixed ability and anyone with a limited experience of Scottish Dance would feel comfortable and gain from the class. We start the class with a warm up of stretches and step practice, gradually preparing our bodies for the exertions ahead. The dances are relatively easy, but challenging, formations of reels, jigs and strathspeys. So come along with or without a partner if you want raise you heart rate, improve your memory and meet new people. Elizabeth, Intermediates With retirement and winter looming, I was looking for a new activity and I joined the Monday Beginners class last autumn. I had not realised how much fun the class would provide. It delivers physical exercise, without a scrap of lycra in sight! Equally important, it is also keeping the brain alert, learning something new. Sometimes I remember the sequences, sometimes not. It is quite satisfying to be able to complete a whole dance. However in such a friendly, encouraging environment, mistakes become merely adaptations and much credit has to be given to Brian, our tutor, who is patience personified. The live music provided by our pianist Moira is a welcome bonus. Fun, fitness and friendship something to look forward to each week. Anonymous, Monday Beginners Primarily what I get from dancing is a good laugh! As a bonus it keeps me physically and mentally on my toes, trying to work out the dances. We are super lucky with our ever encouraging teacher who teaches us the dances with some historical facts thrown in and we have beautiful live music tailored to our every need which for tricky dances is endless. Iona, Monday Beginners Many thanks to all our teachers and musicians who encourage and nurture all our dancers every week at our classes. We are delighted to be holding a workshop and dance to celebrate International Day of Dance on Saturday 28th April, in the Lauriston Hall, Lauriston Street, Edinburgh, EH3 9DJ. This is a new venture and we hope you will come along and support this event. The workshop is aimed at all dancers who have at least some knowledge of basic formations and will be a fun way to improve your dancing. See page 5 for more information.

9 A new dance for Children at our Ball 9 A new competition for young dance devisors was launched this year and captured the imagination of all the young dancers heading to our Children s Ball. The brief was simple: a fun, progressive 32 bar reel or jig. The prize was a tune especially composed for the dance by renowned musician Iain MacPhail and publication of the dance. The nine dances submitted certainly set a judging challenge but the winning dance was The Reel for Chocolate Bourbons devised by Alice Reedie from RSCDS Dunfermline Branch Children s Class. Alice loves Chocolate Bourbons and they were the inspiration for her dance. Our Judge, Bob Grant, also commended JELC from George Watson s School, and our own Children s Class with their round the room dance "Round Scotland!". Alice is seen here being presented with the reel Miss Alice Reedie which was written for the winning dance by band leader Iain MacPhail. Congratulations to Alice, we hope to be dancing The Reel for Chocolate Bourbons for many years to come at our Children s Ball. Our Children s class were delighted with their result at Perform in Perth and hope to be back next year to dance again. Two of our young dancers tell you themselves about what they enjoyed that day: The Children had a Ball Children from across Edinburgh, Fife and the Borders had a great evening at our Children s Ball, dancing to Iain MacPhail and his Scottish dance band, and there is no doubt that the Flying Scotsman is their favourite dance but they like lots of other dances too, and dance them very well. Many thanks to all the teachers, musicians and parents who ensure children from near and far get to enjoy this annual event. We are also grateful to Walkers Shortbread and S Luca Dairy Ice Cream for their ongoing support. If you know of any young dancers who would like the opportunity to join this event, then please contact Grant Bulloch youth@rscdsedinburgh.org for more information. We d love to have lots more young dancers joining us at this event in It was an amazing experience to dance in front of all those people. It made it feel special to be all dressed the same in purple. Imogen Ellis It was a new experience because we hadn't done any competitions before. I would like to do another competition and it was good to watch the other dancers too.
