A great night was had by one and all! Once again, the Clappy Doo Ceilidh Band did us proud with a wonderful mix of tunes and spirit; the calling was excellent and encouraged everyone to get up to dance. There were the usual dances including the Gay Gordons, Waltzes, Polkas, Barn Dances and of course, Strip the Willow. What is special about this particular Ceilidh is the cultural mix and diversity of those attending. All age groups and people from all over the world danced together and left happy if exhausted. I brought three generations of my own family, and was pleased to hear my 26 year old nephew from London state This was one of the best nights ever! I thoroughly recommend the Ceilidh to anyone who missed out and would like to thank all the volunteers who gave of their free time to make this a very special evening. Martin Adam From the Trustees 3 The time has flown by since the spring classes ended, and we are already looking ahead to the autumn. Summer has been busy with lots going on and you can read all about our events in this edition of Dancing Forth. Our children s class did an excellent job of demonstrating the dances in Princes Street Gardens, despite the very chilly weather! (see page 11). Our children s classes continued during the spring term and we are looking forward to running our new Saturday morning classes in the autumn. We were delighted to host a group of folk dancers from Krakow in Poland in early July. The branch hosted an informal social dance and workshop, where they enjoyed a mix of tuition and dancing with members of the branch. Our demonstration team were invited to be a part of Music at the Museum at the Anstruther Harbour Festival at the end of July, where they danced at the Scottish Fisheries Museum, accompanied by wonderful music from Pete Clark and his fellow Trooters. The branch was also invited to be a part of the Edinburgh Festivals, judging dancing and running workshops for young Chinese dancers at the Chinese Arts and Cultural Festival. Find out more about this exciting event on pages 9 and 12. It was great to see so many dancers at our popular Strawberries and Cream summer dance at the end of July. We danced a fun programme to great music from Matthew Maclennan, and enjoyed refreshing strawberries and cream at the interval. It was very encouraging to see dancers from our classes attending the summer dance, from Beginners through to Advanced. Some dancers did a quick walk through while the dances were being called to give them confidence within the set. We should all encourage people from our classes when they come along to branch dances, and if they require a walk through we should support them in this, as they are our social dancers of the future. Great fun was had at our Festival Ceilidh with people joining us from various parts of the world, including China and Ukraine! It was again held in Greyfriars Kirk and featured the Clappy Doo Ceilidh Band, who made sure the evening went with a bang providing excellent music and instruction. Looking forward to the autumn we have our Welcome dance and classes enrolment night on 18th September at Barclay Bruntsfield, here we are running a free taster session for people to come along and give Scottish dancing a try. So, if you think any of your friends or family would be interested, bring them along! The autumn classes start the following week and our new Saturday morning children s classes have already started. Full details are available on page 7 and on our website. Looking a little further ahead we have a joint afternoon of social dancing with Dunedin dancers on Sunday 7th October, with a fun programme of dances, and our Christmas Dance is on 8th December at the Lauriston Hall dancing to Iain MacPhail and his band. We hope to see you soon on the dance floor!

4 Princes Street Gardens Dancers 4 Pre tour publicity photograph taken in the Caledonian Hotel We were delighted to ask the two Margarets to attend the Royal Garden Party on behalf of Princes Street Gardens dancers. Dancing in the Gardens is enjoyed by many dancers, both locally and from around the world, and this is a small token of the appreciation we all have for everyone involved in the organisation of this has been a great summer, with dancing every Monday evening. We only saw rain on the very last night, however that didn t spoil our fun. Thanks to everyone who has helped in anyway; committee members, bands, and dancers. A Day to Remember Margaret and I couldn't believe it when we were asked to represent Edinburgh Branch at the Queens Garden Party at Holyrood. The weather had been lovely for at least a week before and we hoped it would last. Luckily it did and we wandered around looking at all the dresses and hats and enjoying the sandwiches and small cakes. We were in a good position when the Queen walked through the crowd and were very lucky to get a real close up view of her. We would both like to thank the Branch for giving us the opportunity to attend the Garden Party for a day we will always remember. Margaret Burns and Margaret Harris

I m learning a lot and am beginning to see the impact on my social dancing forays. I had not realised how much fun the class would be. It delivers physical exercise without a scrap of lycra in sight Apply online or register at your first class Class Descriptions If you are unsure of which class is best for you please speak with any of our teachers or contact us for advice. Your teacher may suggest that one of our other classes would be more suitable and give you more enjoyment. We are happy for you to transfer between classes to find the right level for you. Beginners Intermediate General Advanced If you want an introduction to the basics of Scottish Country Dancing, this is the class for you. Here, you will learn many popular Scottish dances along with the basic steps and formations needed to do them. After a few weeks in this class, you re sure to be able to negotiate a ceilidh or two Once you have a reasonable grasp of the basics, this class helps you build your knowledge of the steps and most common formations. Some dancers are comfortable remaining at this level, others progress when they feel ready. You will start to become more confident on the dance floor. This class is suitable for experienced intermediate dancers looking to progress. For this class you should be able to dance most formations without a recap. The class will continue to develop footwork and advanced formations, handing, phrasing, transitions and teamwork whilst focussing on sociability and the overall execution of dances. And of course, lots of fun! Selected dances from upcoming events will be taught as many in this class enjoy going to Branch dances and dancing socially in general. For dancers who are confident with all formations and want to perfect their dancing with others of a similar level. Steps and formations are covered in depth with individual comments given to help dancers attain a high level of technique. NEW CLASSES for young dancers on Saturday mornings at The Church of the Good Shepherd, Murrayfield Avenue, Edinburgh, EH12 6AU Want your child to learn how to dance? Get some exercise? Or perhaps make life-long friends? Our Children s classes are a great way for young dancers to have fun, make new friends and learn new skills. The classes are graded by ability and offer something for dancers aged Beginners (P1+) ; Intermediate (P4+) ; Advanced Full details are on our website Please share this information with any young dancers you know.

8 Summer School It was great that so many members were involved in the RSCDS Summer School in St Andrew s this year. Some of them are delighted to share their experiences with you. Rachel Shankland Deputy Director Weeks 3 and 4 Being Depute Director of Summer School was an exciting experience for me. The two weeks in St Andrews were tiring, hard work but very rewarding. From making sure everyone was in the correct class; to making sure staff had all the information needed; to helping Jim host parties for staff and volunteers; to sorting out the unit 5 teaching exams; to teaching the Country Dem; and being a glorified tea lady I was certainly busy! There were lots of high points over the two weeks however I think my favourite moment was seeing the Youth Technically Challenging class (for year olds) come to life for the first time and the teenagers making new lifelong friends. I also found time to meet lots of interesting people and make new lifelong friends of my own. It was an experience I will never forget especially with the video evidence of my appearance on STV news! Theresa MacVarish Teacher Week 2 The weather was wonderful all week but maybe a mixed blessing when it comes to dancing energetically in church halls without air conditioning. However it didn t deter the enthusiasm of the participants as those who signed up for a week of dancing are keen to use every opportunity to extend their skills and knowledge of Scottish country dancing. After arriving and finding my room in University Hall there was time to have afternoon tea before a short walk into the town. That first evening I was on duty to call at the ceilidh. This was a fun evening which set the tone for a week of fun, socialising, great music and dance. I was privileged to teach the Starters/ Restarters group for the week. They were a lovely group of dancers with very little experience so we were able to begin at the beginning without any pressure and take things at a slow pace. My aim was that they would be able to join in a number of the dances on the programme of the Saturday dance in the Younger Hall, gaining confidence on the way. This aim was realised with the dancers enjoying the evening at their own level whilst enjoying the music from the participants of the Music Course. I thoroughly recommend a week at St Andrew s where fun, fitness and friendship can be found in abundance!! Rachel with the Dem Team Carola Bronte-Stewart Dancer Week 2 I attended the RSCDS Summer School at St Andrews for the first time this year. I was there for week 2 which coincided with the musicians course and didn t clash with the Edinburgh Festival. There were 78 dancers and 30 musicians. 270 dancers were expected for week 4! Many of the participants have been going for decades. Newcomers get a star on their badges, a mixed blessing because although people are friendly and welcoming, they avoid you in dances, fearing that you might be a beginner. You ll meet dancers from all over the world. I stayed in University Hall where most of the action is. There was a building site to the south where new accommodation is being added. It was very noisy from 7am to 6pm. The party room was noisy too and the mattress was terrible but the food was good. More importantly, the people, music and dancing were great. We went through all the book 52 dances at the classes. There were dances on six evenings, three in the Younger Hall which has a wonderful sprung floor. There was a ceilidh on Friday evening, the highlight was Edinburgh s Seonaid Lynn who sang beautifully. I wouldn t recommend Summer School for complete beginners, they were daunted by the evening dances. You need lots of changes of clothes when it s as hot as it was and take some hangers, you only get four. There s an opportunity to buy shoes and the new book. There isn t a lot of free time but the afternoon activities are optional, some people catch up with sleep. I did the quadrilles workshop, stooged for the unit 3 candidates one day, met friends and did some sightseeing. It was exhausting but worth going. Theresa with the Beginners Class from Week 2 Stephen Carr and Alex Dyet Dancers Week 2 Summer School in St Andrews is an event we look forward to every year. Many dancers choose to attend the same week every year and meet up with friends from previous years. It is a great opportunity to meet people from all over the world, and in week 1 there were dancers from Japan, Uruguay, America, Canada and Australia to name a few. Classes in the mornings are held in various locations round St Andrews with some around a mile from the University halls where most dancers stay for the week. Walking to classes provides a great warm up! We had excellent tuition from Heather Cowan in the first half of the week and Allana Creighton in the second, with a variety of dances selected to highlight particular techniques and formations, together with a number of dances from book 52. The afternoons are less structured and we chose to go to two personal critique classes and some walk-throughs for the evening dances. There are dances most evenings, some in the University Hall common room, and two in the Younger Hall with its truly wonderful sprung dance floor. Dancing there is an experience in itself. The Ceilidh on Friday is a break after the serious dancing and is great fun. It s a busy week that flies past and is over far too soon. Never mind, there s always next year!

9 Dance Scottish around the world 9 Scottish and Polish Dancers Unite In late June, Elizabeth Harry sent an to some dancers from our classes asking for volunteers to take part in a workshop along with a group of dancers from Kraków. We knew nothing more but as the social side of dance is very important and these dancers had travelled a long way to dance, it seemed a good idea to take part. It was a very hot Sunday evening at the beginning of July when a group from the Branch made their way to Murrayfield Parish Church Hall to meet our Polish visitors. As Brian and Elizabeth Harry greeted the guests there was a quick realisation that these dancers, although from far off Poland, had a level of expertise well beyond that of the normal visitor. Before our workshop began, we had the chance to chat with our guests. We discovered that they are a group who actually study all types of dance from The Middle Ages to modern dance. They have costumes to suit the period of dance and the ladies change their hairstyles to suit the particular period. For Scottish country dancing the ladies were dressed in long, very elegant skirts with pretty blouses while the men proudly wore kilts, of course. The group is taught by a husband and wife team so it was very fitting that Brian and Elizabeth Harry were teaching and calling the dances for us. After our warm up, Elizabeth started with a short step practice. We are so fortunate to have very good dance teachers in Edinburgh and this group is also fortunate. The steps had clearly been studied and extremely well taught. After step practice we went into sets for dances where everyone mixed so well and we all settled in to a fantastic evening of dance. After the dancing ended, there was an opportunity to chat and I think everyone agreed that, although a barbecue had a massive appeal on such a hot evening, the enjoyment of that evening of dance outstripped any temptation there might have been to stay in the sunshine! We have to thank Brian and Elizabeth for setting up this liaison and for hosting such a successful evening and to Alasdair Wood for the wonderful music which raised our spirits and without which the evening would not have gone with such a swing! Aileen Waddell Can you help us? We are holding a Unit 5 candidate course this Autumn and we are looking for volunteers for our candidates to teach. We have several young dancers completing the final part of their RSCDS Teaching Certificate. Can you spare them some time to come along and be a part of their training? We need dancers who have a reasonable basic knowledge of steps and formations and we can promise that you will find the process enlightening and there will be lots of tea and biscuits. If you can spare us some of your time, in return for a free dance class, on the following dates, please let us know. Saturdays 20 Oct, 10 Nov, 24 Nov from and Sundays 21 Oct, 11 Nov, 25 Nov from at Holycross Church, 36 Quality St, Davidson s Mains, EH4 5BS info@rscdsedinburgh.org Our Demonstration Group have had a busy and unusual summer. We had our usual spot dancing in Princes Street Gardens however this year a bunch of kids managed to steal our spotlight...! They even knew all their dances before they arrived however they let some of us step in to help them dance their favourite dance, the Flying Scotsman. They are our future demonstrators, and it was lovely to watch them. We were delighted to be a part of Music at the Museum at the Anstruther Harbour Festival with Pete Clark and his fellow Trooters. We danced in the Zulu Gallery at the Fisheries Museum, and it was a beautiful if unusual backdrop. It was great to see lots of familiar faces in the audience. This year saw Scottish country dancing return to the Edinburgh Festivals as part of the Chinese Arts and Cultural Festival at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre. We had workshops for lots of young Chinese dancers, who are very keen to learn our Scottish culture (see Page 12). Bob Grant, Ruby Wilkinson and Elizabeth Harry had their adjudication skills tested judging Chinese dance competitions for young dancers from across China. Brian G Harry

11 Youth 11 Young dancers lead the way demonstrating part of our programme of dances in Princes Street Gardens earlier this summer. Our children s class were delighted to be able to be a part of this, following on from their success at Perform in Perth. They were also very excited to be part of a Combined Adults and Children s team. The team are mixed ages from 7 12 and all worked incredibly hard to learn and polish five dances Our Children s class with their guests at our Children in Need Ceilidh It was a good experience to dance in the gardens, and it looked like everyone was enjoying it. It was nice seeing the girls in their new dresses and the boys in their kilts. Emma Crawford We d like to thank our Children s Class teachers, Elizabeth and Theresa; Linda, Rena and Christine who regularly help out as an extra pair of hands and Alastair Wood who s fantastic music and patience helps the children to dance their best.
