2 Microfilm Roll # 1 SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE Record Group 171, State Planning and Development, Tennessee Homecoming 86, spans the years of The record group consists of eight series in addition to video tapes and audio cassettes which were transferred to the library section of the Library and Archives. Series 1 includes newspaper clippings highlighting homecoming activities in the various communities throughout the state. The clippings are arranged according to month and year. Series 2 consists of community commitment forms. When a community determined that it wished to be involved in the Homecoming 86 festivities, the Homecoming Office sent a commitment form to the prospective community requesting further information pertaining to its homecoming. This information includes committee members and proposed community activities. Series 3 is photographic contact sheets located in the vault at II-D-2v. A photograph of the County Court House in Cannon County, Woodbury, Tennessee located in the vault at shelving south wall I-A-oversized. Series 4 is general correspondence pertaining to the operations of the Homecoming 86 Office and projects planned by the office. Series 5 contains county files detailing homecoming activities in the counties participating in the project. Series 6 consists of press releases and Series 7 is composed of books and brochures generated by the Homecoming Office. Series 8 is subject files created by the Homecoming Office. Details of each file are included in the register. Subject areas include corporate sponsorship, biographical sketches, community development programs, public relations work and music poetry sent in to the Homecoming Office

3 TENNESSEE HOMECOMING 86 CHRONOLOGY 1978 Lamar Alexander walked 1, 022 miles across the state in a successful bid for the governorship of Tennessee 1982 Alexander s re-election campaign focused on community days. On 45 occasions he worked in self-help projects ranging from new libraries to developing city parks. This is the beginning of development of Homecoming January 15. In Alexander s 2 nd Inaugural address he stated, We can have our better paying jobs and keep our special way of life of we use common sense. Let us have our own kind of Tennessee Homecoming: Let us all come home ourselves to the values which make our Tennessee way of life so special Alexander appoints Alex Haley and Minnie Pearl as co-chairmen of Homecoming Alexander identifies 39 pilot communities to serve as models for Homecoming April 1. Alexander appointed Lee Mune as Executive Director of Homecoming July 17. Five hundred communities in Tennessee are designated as Homecoming Communities 1986 January 1. Official beginning of Homecoming January 1-December 31. During this time more than 6,000 projects and celebrations were held throughout the state, including a literacy festival, involvement in the Smithsonian Folk life Festival which itself focused on Tennessee and the Homecoming 86 Special.
