2 SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE The State Library and Archives has collected several hundred highway maps from various cities and counties in the State of Tennessee. These maps are published by the State Department of Transportation (previously, the State Department of Highways and Public Works). It appears that these maps are published about every ten years, or whenever a great deal of new roads or growth within an area has occurred. These maps were originally collected by the State Library, but the collection was transferred to the Archives Division sometime in the mid-1950s. These maps are housed in the TSLA map cases on the eighth floor stack. Older, smaller maps (ca. 1939) have been bound into volumes and are available through the State Library Division. These maps are an excellent source for research into the development of Tennessee cities and counties from the 1930 s to the current period. Especially of interest in this record group are the general highway maps of Tennessee, which cover the period 1940 through 1985 (and may include recent maps). This collection is divided into three groups: city highway maps, county highway maps and general state highway maps. All maps are listed alphabetically. Some city maps may include a second, adjourning city. Year dates are listed after each city or county represent years for which maps are available. This collection is open-ended, and will be updated in the future as TSLA acquires current maps from the State Department of Transportation.
