Wow! To start the week, Tennessee 4-H had another successful Fall Judging event. We had an increase in both teams and counties in this year s event over It is always a joy to see the excitement as the awards are presented and the pride on their faces as they celebrate their accomplishments. But, I had a special moment at Fall Judging. A mom approached me and stated that she wanted to talk to me about 4-H Roundup this year in Martin. She told me the story of her daughter crying on the way to the bus and her reluctance to go to Roundup and participate in the interviews. Upon returning, she told her mom she had fun, made friends and the interviews were not that bad. She really had a nice conversation with the judges. Mom told me that Roundup made a change in her daughter. She just wanted me to know that she appreciated the IMPACT 4-H has had on her daughter. Folks, that is why we do 4-H. We teach, we plan, we implement events, we make opportunities. The result is impact youth; we change lives! Celebrate these victories for a job well done.

9 Page 9 Graduate Student Spotlight Carrie Ann Stephens, Graduate Coordinator As a faculty member and graduate advisor, I have the privilege of working with many outstanding Extension agents across Tennessee. Each graduate student works extremely hard to complete his or her Master of Science degree in Agricultural Leadership, Education and Communications. In addition, some graduate students elect to write a thesis as a part of their degree program. Ronnie Cowan, a University of Tennessee Extension Director in Lewis County, recently completed his thesis entitled 4-H Wildlife Habitat Education Program: A Qualitative Study in Career Exploration. Ronnie then worked diligently to convert his thesis project into a journal article which was recently published in the Journal of Southern Agricultural Education Research. Congratulations Ronnie! Abstract: Previous studies have documented the Wildlife Habitat Education Program (WHEP) builds life skills of 4-H participants. Furthermore, youth education and development of life skills are enhanced through 4-H educational efforts that provide hands-on learning projects and concepts that ultimately assist in career development (Bandura, Barbaranelli, Caprara, & Pastorelli, 2001; Bourdeau, The purpose of this study is to describe WHEP participants perceptions of careers in wildlife management after the completion of the annual program. The central research question guiding this study was how do 4-H members view careers in wildlife management after participating in WHEP? A focus group comprised of nine WHEP participants was conducted at the Tennessee 4-H Wildlife Judging contest to determine participants perceptions of careers in wildlife management after completion of the annual program. Focus group participants indicated participating in WHEP peaked their interest in wildlife and provided an opportunity to experience the importance of natural resource management. Future research should be conducted on a national level that measures the perceptions of outdoor enthusiasts regarding the fundamentals of wildlife management. This question could give insight on the transfer of knowledge between adults and youth. Read the full article at THIRD QUARTER HONOR CLUB SUMMARY Justin Crowe, Extension Specialist We believe Honor Club is a good measure of a quality teen program. A county cannot have Honor Club members if there are not a lot of opportunities for participation. At the end of the third quarter, the Eastern Region leads the state with 135 initiates. Madison is the top county with 53 initiates; followed by Bradley with 43; Moore with 17; Polk with 15; and Sumner and Williamson with 12 each. For a complete summary of the 2018 Honor Club initiates by region and county, go to Savannah Dodson, student assistant in our department, is working with Honor Club this year. If you have Honor Club applications to be approved, be sure to use a summary form to list the applicants and allow enough time for her to review and process the applications in time for your initiation ceremony.
